    another heavily overrated whisky...
    is it good? yes absolutely
    is it special?.. yeah somewhat..
is it 94+, best whisky ever..? not even close...

Together with four other Bunnahahbhain tasted in blind tasting!

Already the nose promises a full bouquet of extensive flavors. The longer the whisky in the glass, the more intense it becomes ...

    The Taste:
The nose promises a lot, the taste exceeds expectations!
This malt is an elixir and reflects the full range of a very old, sherry-ripened and slightly bulbous whisky.

    (Please offer everything)

Definitely something that is complex and takes time, but a classy stuff. Something more is sure to come over time.
    • Nose
      92 92
There is fine wood with a note of sandalwood and a little cinnamon. Churches us sweet malt. But also something fruity, perhaps like strawberry and apricot jam and gingerbread.
    • Taste
      92 92
There is fine wood, and again jam and gingerbread. Malt, but also a little cowshed ala bruichladdich, but well integrated and not as distinctive. A little smoke and then wood. Is there still leather? But some nutmeg and cardamom.
    • Finish
      89 89
Sweet and turns into a slight bitterness with a little tobacco and coffee and pure cocoa. Great stuff, only the finish could be a bit more.

  4. Andara scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Was able to try it out at Auld Alliance Singapore. Really liked it, unexpected for a 40 year old. Quite fresh and vibrant and fairly priced.

  5. DenisLeonov scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

the aroma has wonderful notes of pickles, but the taste and finish are inherent in much younger molt.

  6. mothers_finest scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Great, elegant oak notes, very herbaceous on the palate, extremely long finish!
Great part, but you have to like the extreme "herbalism". Tropical fruits, for example, are absolutely in vain ...

  7. LDB scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

Unfortunately, that doesn't happen very often - fantastic, that's a Bunna in perfection.
    • Nose
      93 93
Fragrant coastal aromas - definitely not alcohol, right? Fruit aromas creep in discreetly.
    • Taste
      95 95
Delicious mint notes, spicy fruitiness, oily and floral notes, fresh and clean.
    • Finish
      92 92
Tender, very tender smoke, absolute harmony.

For me the nose is the best part! Tastebuds are telling me it's a bit bitter, the alcohol is decent integrated but for me not much more to explore.
Tasting this makes it hard to believe it is 40yo, think it's a nice whisky but for me nothing special.
It's only because of the good nose it gets an 80+ score.

  10. RoKa scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

    Fantastic, old, complex

  11. Fishmac scored this whisky 95 points Expert Junior

Old, dirty and unusual. A lot of old white fruits like pear or morelas, mashrooms, tabaco. Super long finish. Colour is light as 3yo.

  12. eselsim scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Expectations are a bit high, but the impressions are rather positive, good balance, aroma of sauerkraut, a bit of sea notes, the taste of cursed grass, wet moss and fresh apples, after so many years the malt is still lively

For this level of release - it's a failure. I don’t understand where such high ratings come from, absolutely nothing interesting. Exploitation of the name and nothing else
    • Nose
      89 89
The first nose is rather unimpressive. Fruit in a musty cellar, cucumber pickle with dill. light salty smoke, citruses
    • Taste
      88 88
unripe citruses, ripe yellow apples, salty smoke
    • Finish
      87 87
citruses sprinkled with salt, wood and bitterness of apricot kernels, some smoked meats

  14. DrunkDude scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Absolutely crap. You can smell grappa and straw in nose. And the taste is spicy.

Second tasting, 6 months after opening a bottle.
Improved slightly in the nose but still Worth strong 92 points.

Very unique combination of tropical fruits and spices, really great!!
    • Taste

Quite punchy and dry, less fruity than nose promises however still well balanced and very well composed!
    • Finish
      92 92
Medium long, dry, quite complex and layered

Banana vanilla coconut orchard fruits, pepper, a bit surprising, very good

  19. Pauci scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

    Nose:
Very green, with unripe bananas and aloe vera. Some cactus and savory.

Flavor: Black Afghan and Lemon Haze. Spunk. If you want to know how grass tastes in whisky, you can't ignore this one.

You could have the whole thing a little cheaper than for 1000 €, just put something in your bottle. But who does that anyway?

Conclusion: absolutely unusual and unbelievable. Meets my taste. 93+

Absolutely delicious. Not to say “awesome”. Sometimes a little crazy. I wouldn't have guessed the bunna though. But that doesn't matter, does it? Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/10/21/ziemlich-vertikaler-bunnahabhain/

Good complexity level, needs some time that the fruitiness comes out, water is recommended as it will open up, little bit maritime which is typical Bunnahabhain - one extra point for that - overall very good but somehow not fully meeting my expectations (for a Samaroli).
    • Nose
      91 91
Malty, honeydew, white wine, spices, cloves, pepper, grapes, apple, peach, banana, mirabelle, fragrant, hints of vanilla and coconut - needs some air to breath - very good
    • Taste
      92 92
Pretty punchy, oily, subtle sweetness, fruity, more on yellow fruits, apple, peach, also white grapes, peppery, ginger, little vanilla, oak wood, little salty, hints of seaweed - still good
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium long, warm, little bit more punchy, zesty, spicy, more woody and more vanilla, little more on grapefruits

Fruity, honey. The smell of mown grass, Duchess pear. The taste is sweet, bright, and fruity. In the aftertaste, the salt barely shows through the sweetness.

For sure one the finest Bunna's I ever had. For me on the same level as the legendary "Kinship/Ardnahoe" bottlings.
    Nose: incredibly fresh for 40 years;
Taste: Dark berries and other dark fruits, very little smoke,
but caramel and a touch of chocolate.
And then: Not a never ending story, but an - almost never ending aftertaste, pleasing the palate for nearly two minutes.
    Whar a great dram, Chapeau!

Best whisky i ever had, i blind tasted it together with other high rated whiskies (PE rare malts 20), this one was the top!

  34. Razr did not rate this whisky Member Junior

One of the best whiskys I've ever tasted.
The nose is complex and stratified.
    Palate is really something special..
An infinite combination of perfectly balanced sensations
The persistence on the palate is incredible
Price is high but worth every penny
    Thanks you Samaroli

Perfect balance of spirit / cask at this age.
The color is like an eight your old.
    • Nose
      93 93
Sandalwood, warm sand, dried mussels, then it slowly gets a little fruity: fresh strawberries, cherries, blueberries, some gingerbread.

      The alcohol is barely noticeable.
    • Taste
      93 93
Sweet and oily, exotic fruits and then a lot of herbs (tarragon, thyme, rosemary).
    • Finish
      92 92
Very long and spicy, the herbs stay a long time.
