Wanting to represent Islay, obviously, they chose the simplest and most direct route, with a whisky full of smoke and seaworthiness that pushes on the two most characteristic aspects without giving much else.
On the other hand, for such an economic and at the same time "limited" edition, we could not have expected much more.
Of course, at this point for the same price it is better to take one of the base malts of the blend...
    • Nose
      78 78
The smell, as expected, reveals the peaty and marine soul of the whisky, with barbecue smoke and salt. The smoke is actually quite light, leaving plenty of room for fruity notes with lemon zest and a spicy touch.
    • Taste
      74 74
The palate becomes more fleshy and hard, very ashy, with the marine soul to act as a counterpart together with citrus and cloves. Smoking tends to prevail, offering very little evolution.
    • Finish
      74 74
The finish is medium long, of used ashtray, salt and orange.

    Bang!

I'm not going to waste too many words on the intro. We all know Johnnie Walker. From their 12-year-old Black Label they launched a so-called 'Origins' series a few years ago with a Black Label Speyside, Highlands, Lowlands and Islay. The latter is now in the glass.

Hello! This is all Caol Ila on the nose and I'm happy about that. Nicely embellished with sweet notes of vanilla, honey and some sherry. Orangettes and Turkish Delight. A gentle touch of a bonfire on the beach. That could just be a drop of Lagavulin. This is simply very tasty.

It is very soft on the tongue. Immediately some soft smoke development, orange juice on steroids, vanilla and honey... in that sense, a fine continuation of the nose. And let it be known: again very tasty. This does not need water and is far too tasty to mix with.

The finish is long, sweet and smoky.

Great blend. Yes, the Caol Ila stands head and shoulders above the rest. Very successful expression of an already good – but unfortunately somewhat undervalued – blend. Bang for your buck too: less than 40 EUR. No brainer, really. Give it blind to any non-believers, just do it.

Islay Blended Malt Whiskey at 42%

The Johnnie Walker Black Origins series is a special interpretation among the Black Label bottlings. Only whiskeys from one of the four whiskey regions Lowlands, Speyside, Highlands and Islay were used for the four whiskeys. In this way, the bottlings also capture the character of the respective region. Islay Origin is created from single malts from the Islay region, i.e. from Lagavulin and Caol Ila.

typical Caol Ila, nice, fine smokiness, light citrus, deep sweet vanilla and sherry, light campfire that seems to come from Lagavulin
    • Taste

nice smoke, a bit thin, but very tasty, easy drinking, next to smoke, relatively little taste
