A very nice PC from the Bourbon barrel. The next time he might be undiluted, but for the moment he liked me better with a bit of water, especially in his nose.
    • Nose
Grapefruit juice and smoked trout - I think I've never had this combo in the glass before.
62.7% is an announcement, and much more than the aforementioned flavor I do not get pulled out, so half a teaspoon of water on the 3cl Dram.
Now he makes clear, peat smoke comes to light, as well as other citrus fruits such as lemons and tangerines. Overall, it looks very fresh and refreshing. Sea salt, fresh seaweed, sea water with a light oil film (well, is not exactly fresh, but hey). Pepper and nutmeg, also rape honey and squeaky sweet quince jelly.
    • Taste
Very pleasant start, almost soft, because you could almost thicken the water diluted with whisky again a bit. Creamy mouthfeel, toffee, milk chocolate, coffee beans. Mild smoke, some wood. Roasted lemon slices, seaweed, chain fat, grilled cod.
    • Finish
Medium to long finish, becomes increasingly sweeter and leaves the maritime and smoky notes behind. Lime slices, oranges, and then again the smoke of a cold peat fire.

I really enjoyed this, outstanding considering its youth.

Slight accessibility issues prevent me from going to 90 - the palate really needs water, but it disrupts the complexity of the nose.
    • Nose
      90 90
Immediately impressive and somewhat old school - sweet, gristy, earthy peat. Dunnage, a touch of TCP and burning leaves, with a vanilla-ed creme brulee sweetness cutting through. Beautiful blast of raw wool, smoked hazelnut ice cream(!) and Haribo fried eggs. Water brings tangerine and gritty esters, but some of the complexity is lost. Tinned anchovies and joss sticks.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pretty fiery at first, that youthfulness snaps at you after the palate has lulled you into false security. Crystalline, like sucking a brown sugar cube. Big, acrid (to the point of being slightly distracting) smoke and vanilla custard. Water calms it - chiseled and sharp, fairly monolithic and very sweet. Green apples, ready salted crisps and milk chocolate.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long, with latte, aniseed, scorched heather. Estery, black pepper and demerara.

  18. Ostap scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

The aroma is noticeably restrained by the degree, although quite meaningful. Expressed oak. Over time, gaining. The taste is expected to be explosive, rich and acceptable to receptors. Not a simple whisky, great for tasting, with a lot of nuances. Significantly adds in the tasting process.
    • Nose
      91 91
Bay leaf, black pepper peas, oak, honey, mineral, a hint of cowshed (thin and cool), carpentry workshop with all components (varnishes, shavings, boards ...), a little ash, toffee, sea salt, tangerine peel, in cherry, prunes, vanilla, canned pear, smoked malt, Christmas gallery, a hint of herring spicy salt, cucumber brine.
    • Taste
      92 92
Sugar, fruit, dried fruits, prunes, smoke, ash, oak, varnish. Fantastic saturation!
    • Finish
      90 90

    Isaly

Whisky-Fässle is a German indie bottler, active since 2006 with already quite a few releases on their resumé. This Port Charlotte – from the Bruichladdich distillery – was bottled last year from a single cask that, even after 10 years of maturation, still delivered a malt with an ABV of nigh 63%. I will keep water handy.

On the rather close but very creamy nose it’s a combination of a seafood platter and grapefruit juice, upholstered with vanilla, banana and quince. Not a lot of smoke, in fairness, but surprisingly candy-like after a few moments. The alcohol seems to be perfectly integrated, for this does not burn my nostrils.

The body is full, but again quite soft (well, it’s still a sturdy fellow, but I do not gasp for breath, nor do I feel the inclination to add water). Creamy and sweet on buttermilk , toffee, vanilla and molded wood. The smoke appears intermittently and does not dominate at all. The salty element rears its head once in a while, but this is mostly very sweet. Not much left of the seafood platter bar a hint of smoke trout. This is very good, have no doubt.

The finish is medium long and confirms all of the above. It stars salty on maritime notes and smoke, but then suddenly becomes very sweet on sugared citrus peel and overripe banana.

A veritable enjoy-whisky from Isaly. Okay, I admit, that’s a bit silly, but that’s actually what it says on the label: Port Charlotte Isaly Scotland. Big typo if you ask me, but it does nothing to detract from the contents of the bottle.

  21. aphex scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A very well-balanced Port Charlotte from nose and palate to finish. Very quaffable despite the high ABV. Very fond of this one.
    • Nose
Peat smoke, soot, light tarry notes, lemons, coastal notes, a touch of pepper, camphor, pencil shavings. Very fresh, nicely balanced.
    • Taste
Strong, honey, peat, soot, lemons, big peppery notes, salted caramel. I don't feel like adding water but well, it's my second pass.
With a few drops of water, nothing new, maybe just a tad more juicy.
    • Finish
      Long, smoky, peppery, slightly medicinal.

This one really needs some water to open up. And I'm not a fan off adding water to my whisky.

    nose:
creamy, citrus, spices and a big bowl of sea air from a small fishing port with the boats coming in and a peaty appearance.
    a little varnish
    mouth:
    the slap !:
honey, fruity, candied sensation, honey, still used varnish, very peppery spices arrive there!
salted butter caramel arrives, sweetness despite the alcohol level, the peat I was going to forget, iodine again; a little bitterness there with minty herbs then it starts again on the caramelized side, sweet, a little chocolatey and devilishly drinkable, it stays in the gums, the peat and the candied lemon at the end with some spices which potentiate all that.
    final:
oaky, lemony, finely peaty, more over a wood fire with dried seaweed on the side; final that lasts.

Well camphorated nose, menthol, tiger balm and a big peat oriented on the wood fire.
The attack is mentholated, with cloves, eucalyptus, then the peat spreads. The texture is very pleasant, thick and the whole is very warm even if the alcohol is very well integrated.
Very long, peaty (hospital bandage) and peppery finish.
A very good Port Charlotte, without the farmer side of PC releases but with a very assertive menthol.

To be honest, I can't imagine, that you could have a better 10 y old PC in a bourbon cask. Wonderful malt, creamy, even if you don't add water (check the abv!). But it swimms well, become more creamy with some grapefruit drops and vanilla. Nearly perfect 10 years old malt. Buy a bottle!

Grapefruit juice spilled over a metal jar with pencils. Also quite some coal dust and peaty lime. Not bad at all. I wouldn’t have guessed the high strength.
