Whisky Reviews for Ledaig 2005 ElD

this bottle is exactly my taste. Sweetness, medicinal peat smoke, and an extra complexity brought by the sherry cask. The balance between smokiness and sherry is quite perfect (smokiness is dominant, frutiness comes as an add). In french we say this is a very "gourmand" drink.

I leave the Tobermory distillery to see what is done at the independent bottlers! Head to Elixir Distillers, a bottler who is a hit with whisky aficionados.

This Ledaig is part of their "The Single Malts of Scotland" range. It was distilled in October 2005 and bottled in February 2019. It has spent its entire pregnancy in Sherry Butt, which gives it that beautiful dark amber color. It was bottled at 48%.

The first scent evokes cigarette smoke. Then, grilled meat and a metallic tip emerge. Some notes of ginger, brioche and lemon mingle. It is rather particular and very pronounced, but the nose is generally governed by the marriage between wood and smoke.

Unsurprisingly, the attack gives me delicate notes of smoke. The mid-palate is smooth, on dried fruits, milk chocolate and orange chocolate. Finally come notes of coffee eclair and caramel. The smoke becomes more subdued over time.

The finish is quite long, on crème brûlée, caramel and plum.

With its rather smoky profile (with a nice delicacy on the palate), this Ledaig ElD stands out from the Amontillado Finish and Oloroso Finish presented over the last two days, despite a similar aging.
