Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof KSBW 58.4%.

    Consumed Oct 2021.

    Mid to dark amber orange.

Spiritous and vegetal on the nose up front, woodchip, leather wallet. Given some time in the glass some toffee and vanilla reluctantly show up. It settles on being muted, balanced between sweet vanilla toffee and leafy, ‘green' and spinachy.

The taste is similar. The vegetal note is clear, the toffee comes up and just about supports/counteracts the heavy alcohol up until the swallow, at which point the alcohol says ‘nice try’. On the second sip the alcohol fades a lot but, I mean, it's always there proud and front-and-centre. Paper, spice and alcohol fight with orange and toffee to the extent that everything cancels each other out. There’s a nice balance between the sweet and savoury/spicy impressions, which is WT's hallmark.

People who prefer a drier vibe to their bourbon may never need to look far beyond this one, given the price. I do personally prefer my bourbon and rye to be a touch 'sweeter', but yet I still very much enjoy this. In my opinion this is a big step up from 101 despite the similar flavour profile. 3.525/84

    [An evolving review]
The bar code for this bottle is 'LL/IJ', which (I believe) means this was bottled in October of 2020. Make of this what you will.

I have gone in with high expectations. Wild Turkey 101 is my go-to bourbon for general consumption and I was really looking forward to trying one of the distillery's finer expression.

I had one glass already, but did not take notes and mostly drank just for fun.

    My second tasting:

Nose: Before adding any water the alcohol is a little strong at first, then diminishing. The first dominant aromas are a thick brown sugar, fresh cut wood and a pleasant solvent heaviness that may be some fusel alcohols. The sweetness is reserved and lacks the corny wave of many bourbons. Reminiscent a little of Nikka Coffey Malt, with the note of sunscreen with coconut just waiting off in the wings. It seems at once somewhat overbearing and tight like everything is vying go get into your nose and blocking each other out. With a little time and repeated viewings it becomes more bready and grainy. There was a stewed herbs or vegetal note the previous time I tasted that is absent here, wondering if that was an artefact. I'm wondering if this could use a lot of time to really open up.

With some time the vegetal note opens up into matured cigar tobacco and fresh leather.

Taste: Sweet on the palate, the alcohol numbs the tongue slightly. There is more of that vegetal note, reminiscent of kava, a little musky and not altogether pleasant. Fades quickly, and the finish (at least without any water) is disappointing.

With time: Still the reserved sweet, but opening up: chinotto,

Room temperature when drinking: 18 ℃

Wake up for 30 minutes, add 4 drops of water

    Viewing Eyes: dark amber

Smell Nose: turf flavor, sour plum, fruit skin, acidity is high. Sour plum soup, rose lotion, fresh leather, and alcohol in the Chinese traditional medicine add to the smell.

Add water: cream, plum, orange, smoked cherry wood, fresh apricots, rose petals appear together, herbs, paint taste slightly enlarged, unpleasant taste basically disappeared

Taste Palate: higher acidity, Jiabaodan, paint, leather, cream cake, burning wood at the end, fresh plums, thin-skinned fruit, earth, without water. The taste is locked too tight.

Add water: whipped cream, citrus, floral, wheat, brown sugar buns, flower cakes, singly roasted rosewood

Finish: Finish, long, wood, censer, sweet dried fruit, slightly dry

Add water: roses, citrus essential oil, monkey king dan

Body of the wine: Moderate, significant alcohol strength, strong burning sensation, slightly oily, weak bitter base

    Nose: 84.2 / 100 (without water 83.5)

    Palate: 84/100 (without water 83.5)

    Finish: 86/100 (without water 83)

    Body: 84/100

    Overall: 84.1 / 100 (without water 83.7)

Overall: It becomes stretched after adding water, and it's not so tiring to drink. So still add a few drops of water to drink.
