Signature Dalwhinnie nose, pleasant and encouraging. But the body and palate is bit too week, and continue going downhill in the finish.

A very buttery start, followed by loads of honey and fudge, very nice indeed! Backed by some muskiness, which gave the nose a rather warm touch. The whole thing just got stronger with time. With even more time then there's some menthol at the back that give the whisky some freshness. Eventually the profile turned sugary. Nose-wise this is really quite pleasant!

Quite weak in the mouth. Not much was going on indeed. There's some orange zest, some sherry, some sponge cake, may be some rum, but overall the body and the palate is not up to the job.
    • Finish
      76 76
The finish is resinous and plastic-y, so it felt artificial. Chewing gum also presented, coupled with lingering bitterness - not wood, not coffee, not cocoa, not dark chocolate but a kind of bitterness that is, honestly, quite unpleasant.

1 dimensjonal, not very complex. quite good on the nose. drinkable.

While this ''Dalwhinnie'' doesn't bear an age statement, he doesn't look immature in any way. The malt and the honey notes, characterized by heather, appear very nicely and give the malt a drinkable texture. However, I think it's complete nonsense that it should be enjoyed chilled, as stated on the packaging. This whisky has no unpleasant aromas that would have to be suppressed by cooling.
    • Nose
Lots of honey and heather, ripe apples, steaming youthful barley, the strong malt looks roasted, apricot compote, there is also some vanilla, sea buckthorn
    • Taste
The honey arrives immediately, juicy barley, lots of malt, heather, apples and apricots, herbal tea, nougat, vanilla, sea buckthorn, some smoke
    • Finish
Medium length, juicy and soft, toasted oak note, hazelnut brittle, light vanilla, milk chocolate, honey again, roasted malt, mealy apples, apricots and some peaches, rosehip jam, light smoke in the background

    Not so good

The Winter's Gold is very reminiscent of the 15-year-old bottling. The sweet apple, the strong honey note, the spiciness, all very similar. The Winter's Gold is a bit more edgy, the alcohol is more noticeable and the aromas are perhaps not quite as intense as with the 15er.
    • Nose
Immediately very intense on the nose with sweet apples and apricots, lots of honey and caramel. In the very background there is a barely perceptible wisp of smoke. The fresh menthol note is probably due to the alcohol content. Some oak spice is also noticeable in the nose. Overall a pleasant sweet nose.
    • Taste
First creamy and mild on the tongue, before a noticeable pepperiness sets in. Served with sweet yellow apple with cake batter and spices.
    • Finish
Warming with a spicy, woody oak note that also brings a certain bitterness. Reminds of orange peel and cold coffee. The finish is of medium length.

Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold is only distilled during the season of the same name. Because the distillery's worm tubs are outdoors, the distillate cools faster. This gives the winter edition a lower copper influence.
