Whisky Reviews for Kilchoman 2012
6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.45 points
- A solid Kilchoman that IMO relies too much on the finish.
Tasted with Elements of Islay Cl12 (83 pts.) and Maltbarn Islay Malt 10yo (89). When nosed and tasted next to the Maltbarn bottle, both this Kilchoman and Cl12 feel rather monotone and simple.
Thanks to member GIORGOS for the sample!
First, ashes, then something like a smoked ham dipped in jelly: a fatty smoke rounded by a sweet wine note completely unlike any sherry, and too loud for me. Some rowan fruit and linoleum in the back. It's not entirely a bad nose, but I often feel this same thing with Kilchoman, that the distillate itself doesn't offer that much nuance or detail, and consequently any finish dominates it, making it mostly a smoke+finish affair, not unlike Bunnahabhain's peatier distillate.
A fair bit of coaly, rubbery peat with a side of smoked winegums. The body's pretty solid for such a youngster, but the whole is very straightforward. Water takes away the winegum sweetness, leaving this unfamiliar wine note I can't give a proper description for, and also flattens it.
The finish is the same as the taste. The strong imprint of the wine makes me think of the Octomores meant for travel retail.
