funny part - very shy and complicated - I can not compare him with the 20 Oloroso and there is the 20er for me clearly ahead even if this has zero sulfur is at least similar to the fruit on the palate.

For me, this is clearly a men's whisky, he has beautiful red sherry notes, leather, tobacco and wood are already very dominant.
    • Nose
      87 87
The nose weakens, takes a long time and warmth - then come malt and bread dough, almonds, leather and a restrained fruity acidity
I would rather give a drop of water, would have expected much more vllt what happens.
becomes round, red berry fruit, tannins, strawberries - fresh and as a compote, lime, chalk, licorice, leather, honey, tropical wood sanding dust

The nose is just a bit flat and colorless and that now 3cl in the Snifter

after the first 2 sips, the nose benefits for me - it gets more intense - some of the aromas are now coming through especially nuts and leather notes -
Fruit flavors become more beautiful and rounder
    • Taste
      89 89
sweet, warm, pleasing - beautiful subtle mature woody aromas mingle with leather and furniture polish, strawberry pulp, strawberry compote, rotten wood, old pews in the sun, moss, forest floor, cork, horn shavings, sunflower dried, pepper, nutmeg, dried rosemary, tobacco gets spicier and bitterer with each sip - you drink more fruity more slowly

full - delicious - fruity - tart - really nice balanced
    • Finish
      87 87
very dusty wood - has a little bit of mold - so sporig - dusty tastes but not so - is very nice warm and fruity with balanced wood entry - I especially like this tart balance medium to long

Very interesting sweet and intense tingling spicy malt, which remarkably little sherry barrel notes. Still very tasty and with recognition. The price is quite high for the offered.
    • Nose
      88 88
creamy-sweet character; dark fruits; Dried fruit; raisins; Honey; delicately flowery; some malt; subtle leather note; slightly spicy; hardly oak
    • Taste
      87 87
sweet and spicy onset; Dried fruit; Honey; dusty dry cocoa powder; tingling mouthfeel; peppery spiciness and old oak are increasingly on
    • Finish
      86 86
tingling (shower-like) mouthfeel; sweet basic character remains; Dried fruit; slightly dry; discreet old / musty-looking oak (not bitter)

Interesting that at this age, the sherry barrel so little dominates - but it does the oak all the more. After being very cautious in the nose at the beginning, he opened up nicely again. However, at the age of 23, one would have expected a little more ...
    • Nose
      86 86
In the "onset" in the nose a mixture of grain, malt, honey bread and a floral note. Pleasant, does not push, but is not boring. The Oloroso sherry ripening does not go through too much in the beginning, but after some time it becomes noticeable with raisins and a leather note - with the leather almost moving towards a sweaty sneaker ... almost. Some furniture polish, almond paste. Slight saline note. Yes, it develops and attracts.
    • Taste
      87 87
Not too intensive and dry start. Roasted orange peel, almonds, peanut cream. As in the nose, the sherry keg is not very noticeable. Malt and dusty cocoa. Was dry from the beginning and over time lingers on it. Tidy old oak, leather. Something corky. Marjoram, sage and pepper come on, it is fine dry to bitter, especially in connection with the oak still besieging the tongue.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium and dry, dried orange peel and dried apricots, milk chocolate, almonds, hazelnuts and oak.

With the given framework data I would have expected more. Unfortunately not very convincing and miles behind the great 20yo Oloroso release.
    • Nose
somehow hard to grasp, a sweet basic note, so I would not blindly come here on Oloroso, a touch of almonds, slightly fruity, towards peach, with time, it is a little spicier, oak, leather
After the first sip, the nose opens, lovage, more intense, a little creamy, fresh mint note
    • Taste
sweet, sour, peach, old leather, bubbly, slightly artificial, then comes oak
    • Finish
still bubbly and sour, drier, peach, the mouth is dry, but the sweet base note is still there, here too an artificial or soapy touch

There is a short comparison with my large bottle 20yo (WID: 75098).

The first thing that stands out clearly is that the 23yo is completely free of any sulfur notes. The 20yo has some of that. That's also why I like the 20yo so much. Overall, the 23yo looks less dark than the 20yo. The fruits are relatively bright for 23 years of sherry barrel. A little bit of yeast too. In addition leather and wood notes. The 20yo looks fuller and more intense in comparison.

In the mouth surprisingly sweet paired with wood flavor. The strawberries are only jam and are gradually becoming more sour. Nice oak and spice notes. Some karamalt. In addition a little plasticine. Here, too, the 20yo is somehow mouth-filling and voluminous.

The finish brings dry wood notes. Black tea. Forest floor. Here the two are relatively similar.

Overall, the 23yo is definitely not a bad whisky. In my opinion he can't keep up with the 20yo. Provided you have no sulfur allergy.

Can´t beat the discontinued outstanding 20-years Oloroso Cask from Deanston. Mainly oak is dominating, less the sherry....
