Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain 2013 CA

  1. Official tasting note

Nose: Oily and grassy with background peat. Very industrial. Some black pepper with fennel and lemon thyme. Becomes creamier.

Palate: Dry ash, and then smoking hot oil, pear skins, whole limes, runny honey and a hint of mezcal.

Finish: Drying smoke and then becoming oilier and giving way to creamy stuffed peppers and a hint of engine oil.

    Blind sample.

The perfect blind sample. Set aside your preconceived notions of what a 5 year old whisky should be and just let the whisky do the talking. And talk it did...really impressive for 5 years old. Very clean, no flaws at all. When I first shoved my nose into the glass there was little peat and the alcohol was very accessible (a very good sign in hindsight, that speaks to its quality). My first thought was Ardmore. Quickly it built and was a powerhouse, with my guess being Lagavulin 8. I waffled on Lagavulin 12 as a guess but it just seemed more brash. Either way it’s a great malt and proves these young peat bombs have a place.

Brief notes would be: lemon oil, capers, nori, tar, asphalt, vanilla, shortbread, finish is long of course. Very good and recommended. Beats most Octomore in my opinion and at half the price...

This is a delicious, young „in your face“ whisky. Certainly not overly complex, but completely clear and clean. I like that. Full review (in German): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/01/14/bunnahabhain-jung-unabhaengig-getorft-und-fassstark/

Young smokers can work really well, which is the case here for me. In addition, good ex-bourbon barrels. Everything great and a top PLV.
    • Nose
Ui, a beautiful vanilla bomb, chalky, nice intense smoke, ashy, light peppery spice that supports the vanilla, maritime, some salt, iodine, and also some sweet peach
    • Taste
creamy, intense spicy smoke, cinnamon, vanilla, sweet, but the mouthfeel is dry, some salt
    • Finish
getting drier, chalky, cinnamon, vanilla, ashy smoke, then it gets fruity, again the peach

Rauchinger vanilla pudding. The nose is restrained at first. But opens gradually. Then comes the full load of vanilla and the tentative smoke.

It goes straight to the point on the palate. The alcohol doesn't bite, it is pleasantly integrated. Vanilla dominate with smoke. The smoke is pleasantly "warm".

Young smoky whiskys can be boisterous, but this one isn't. No missing notes.

    Very nice.

Big peaty and smoky notes. Some soil and grass too. Roasted peanuts, I like that! It turns a bit citrussy now. Lemon and lime zest. At the end medicinal. Think of an aid-kit and iodine.

Even more peat and smoke on the palate! But there are also some sweet notes. Like vanilla and dark chocolate. Not fruity at all actually. A nice note like campfire complements together with black peppers. At the end it turns salty and some dry oak.

Short to medium-long. It stays peaty for a short while. This pairs together with notes of vanilla, caocao and some soil.

Very impressive for a 5 year old. Well balanced, yet powerful and its not hiding behind a sugar coated Sherry cask as we often see in younger expressions nowadays.

    • Nose
Very young and peaty, quite oaky, decent for a 5 year malt, sweet.
    • Taste
Sweet, peach, oak water, a lot of pepper and yeast, big, very drying tannins.
    • Finish
      Long, peaty, oaky, fresh paint.
