While a bit of an odd duck, I find it a very interesting concoction, and my favourite of the Glenallachie Wood Finish Series.
    • Nose
First impression is porridge with honey, accompanied by a touch of oak shavings, ripe banana, nutmeg and cinnamon. A tiny bit of fudge, and also a hint of sour beer.
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is a tad thin, yet somewhat oily. Fairly spicy. Think cloves and ginger, with a touch of cinnamon and black pepper. Some more oak shavings, and also a whiff of green banana.
    • Finish
Lingering spices. Broccoli. Finally a surprising touch of smoke.

An interesting experiment, but not very successfull though. Sweet (caramel, toffee, burnt sugar, honey), very spicy (nutmeg, black pepper, chilli), too young and too hot. The finish turns bitter, obviously not the greatest casks have been used for the initial maturation.

Fragrance: tropical fruit, vanilla favor, tropical fruit, Turbo gum, gumisi pack opening

Taste: cardboard, poorly hidden alcohol, tropical fruit and vanilla appear in the background

    Finish: sweet and burning

Simple, young, but you can drink at the table!

  8. WhiskyShaman scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

The Rye is punchy as hell in the nose and tail, but very well integrated into the palate. It doesn't overshadow the spirit, which even though it is still perceptibly young, brings enough of it's own very likeable personality to the table.

IMO If you're going to bottle youngish spirit, this really works a benchmark for what to aim for.
    • Nose
      84 84
Immediate cinnamon oak spice of the Rye carried by dark, Greek honey, molasses, cooked lemon, orange oil and Crème de cassis.
    • Taste
      85 85
Syrup sweet and milder on the tongue than I was expecting with a slower ramp up of the Rye spice, which as well as the cinnamon now has citric ginger. A little barley betrays the youth of the spirit. Small sips miss out the oily, chili payoff.
    • Finish
      86 86
Slightly drying chocolate, rosemary and leather is complemented by fizzy ginger, brown butter and shortbread. Red currant sweet and sour bursts and a satisfying, not insubstantial heat keeps giving.

    Color: of light white wine.
Fragrance: no smoke, pear, very light cardboard, very harmonious, without rough edges, not pungent, reminiscent of Bourbon Cask, not complex, slightly earthy in the background.
Taste: Alcohol well integrated, sweetness, nice taste development, fruit, quite unimportant and one-dimensional. My sample was definitely enough for me.

      Sweet and fruity. Wood.
    • Taste

Nice wood taste first with a mix of honey and herbs later on. Good balance of all the ingredients. Fine malt.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium finish with the rye coming through near the end.

This dram is part of a bunch of Glenallachie samples I bought some time ago to get to know the profile of the distillery somewhat better.
    • Nose
      86 86
Fruit basket coming up from the glass. Hand warming increases this. Loads of vanilla coming up. Mild spices and wood influences. I like this part.
    • Taste
      84 84
Bit thin for a 48% abv. Slightly sharp; tingling mouth feeling. More spices and wood in the taste compared to the nose.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium long. Not the most pleasant Glenallachie finish I experienced till date. Vanilla remains there. Dry in the far finish.

    nose:
spices, vanilla, malty, a little vegetable too and tangy candy
    mouth:
spices, well buttered gingerbread, it is round and fat despite the young age, dry woody return then a little coconut, the characteristic cereal perhaps the strongest of all!
caramel again with pastry spices (cinnamon)
    final:
simple on the same scents, with predominance of vanilla, woody and pastry spices.
    • Finish
Note that the distille has been making SM just since 2017, before it went into the Clan Campbell blends and that the distilla felt crushed by its big sister benrinnes.
Here a little more than 6 years in bourbon casks then 6 months in a small Rye Koval! drum of 125 l.

    • Taste
      86 86
Olly, spicy, sweet, vanilla, sherry, kaneel
    • Finish
      85 85
      Dry and sweet, vanilla
      Good value for money

Certainly not a highflyer but just a decent young whisky with an interesting maturation. The quarter cask left his mark on the the spirit and gives this Glenallachie aromas like vanilla, cinnamon (goldstrike’ish), cloves, ginger and malty sugars. Given the price point I would consider this an interesting zipper.

Young representative with an interesting rye finish. Quite simply and without major highlights.
    • Nose
      77 77
The alcohol cools the nose and shows the youth. You immediately have a nice sweetness and spicy grain notes. I search in vain for fruity flavors in this whisky. Overall very closed but sometimes something else.
    • Taste
      80 80
Very sweet immediately on the tongue. The alcohol tingles, does not seem to be very well integrated. The mouthfeel is lively, there is a nice spiciness. Cinnamon and nutmeg come through.
    • Finish
      78 78
Drying quickly and quickly. Very little wood.

This one needs some time, at first the nose appears to be the best part, but with some patience everything gets stronger, and especially the finish improves significantly.
    • Nose
      83 83
Very sweet aroma, vanilla and honey, a bit grainy as well. Also a bit spicy, pepper. Not a very intense nose.
    • Taste
      81 81
Now some tingling mouthfeel appears, sweet, vanilla and honey, but somehow a bit thin.
    • Finish
      84 84
Still a little pickering, sweet, honey, vanilla, a bit drying mouthfeel. At frist not too long, but after some time it gets longer, stronger and much better.

    Ralfy review 785: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D4uW_o3Wek (85/100).

"It's a real stand-out, singular single malt. And it's primarily to do with the sheer assertiveness of the rye without the rye actually swamping the original spirit."

  37. whiskyinstitut scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      83 83
Sweet malt, popcorn, hot corn on the cob, lemon zest, a bit mineral, quite pungent alcohol, light pastry notes, with grassy to strawy notes
    • Taste
      86 86
Mineral and strong, a blend of lime and vanilla, creamy and slightly alcoholic, quite dry and warm
    • Finish
      84 84
Again grassy and strawy, but very pleasant, fits together somehow, neat oak and warmth, sweet malt sticks for a long time
