    Colour: Copper
Nose: neat: sweet, honeyed, very fruity, I can pick up pineapple, melon and apples. Also some leather aromas. alcohol very subdued. with (a touch of) water: I think water brings more of the fruitiness to the forefront.
Taste: neat: sweet but much less than what could be antecipated from the nose, with some spice notes (peppery/ginger), some oak as well but well in balance. The fruit notes fade tremendously when compared to the nose. with water: sweeter than neat, I think a touch of water really opens up the taste of this whisky more towards the honey side, toning down some of it's spiciness.
Finish: medium duration, spicy and woody/oaky with some honey notes but very faded. with water: pretty much the same.
Comments: I love this whisky, it was one of the first "greats" I tasted and probably I'm slightly biased, but I'll tell you I've tasted the Balvenie 30 and, to me, this one is more enjoyable (and you can buy 4 bottles of the 21 for the price of a 30... no contest, hands down). Unlike what I initially expected, it does improve slightly (to me) with a couple of drops of water, but as always it's a matter of personal taste...
    MY SCORE: Highly Recommended

    Balvenie 21-year @43
It's clearly complex and definitely high quality, but the spirity side is hard to ignore. It's actually fairly disappointing for the price. Maybe it's the port influence? But WAIT, there is a dram about 3/4 into this bottle that really hits its stride. This amazing sweet spot, for whatever reason possibly as high as 95/100, unfortunately could not be repeated. Everything became richly amplified and intensely delicious, strongly honeyed, with vanilla, toffee, caramel, chocolate, and a hefty mix of straight sherry and port thrown into the mix. So that’s worth something. How many bottles will I buy in the future chasing that dram?
    • Nose
A spirity overcoat but with underlying raisins, honey, vanilla, cream, syrup, coconut, chocolate, oak. All good so far.
    • Taste
Rich, full, and rounded. A little bit hot, a little bit disappointing, but a nice sweet attack. There is marzipan and lots of honey, naturally, with oaky overtones.
    • Finish
Unfortunately it is still spirity and hot. Aside from that, crisp and warming, leaving notes of coconut, raisins, chocolate, and finally toffee. Not bad.

    • Finish
Finish is complex but warming like a light flannel blanket.

"To create The Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old, rare 21 Year Old Balvenie - which has been matured in traditional oak casks - is transferred to a port cask, or pipe, which has held fine port wines. Here it is sampled every month by The Balvenie Malt Master to ensure that just the right amount of character is imparted by the port casks, enhancing and developing the single malt, whilst preserving its original characteristics.

"A single malt of refinement and remarkable character, it is creamy and silky with fruit, honey and spice notes, and has a long and gentle nutty finish." - Distillery

This was a nice find, being that this scotch is selling for about 200$us I was in Del Mar, Ca. USA and went in for some coffee and noticed a large collection of liquor. There it was 129.99$ didn`t know why, and didn`t ask. I said if you have a ladder I would like that bottle please, and walla!
