  1. Drum scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

That was a nice drop, I liked it! The alcohol is nicely integrated.
    • Nose
A sweet heavy sherry sweetness with an enormous depth greeted my nose. Brown sugar with sweet pipe tobacco, notes of wood and cake. A fruitiness of dried fruits such as sultanas, dates and plum jam with rum raisins or rum-grape-nut chocolate.
    • Taste
A strong start but still mild, plus more pipe tobacco, sherry and again this heavy sweetness but softened by roasted aromas. I also find pastries again, with an astringent mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Medium length and very warm. Nice and mild with dried fruit and brown butter - not as a mouthfeel, it's dry but in taste! Very pleasant.

A successful bottling with a pleasingly high drinking strength and an extremely round character, in relation to the quite young age.
I'm excited to see what awaits us here in the coming years.
    • Nose
      87 87
A very dense, fruity, slightly perfumed nose, which also has a nice fresh note. The alcohol is only slightly noticeable.
Vanilla, caramel, gooseberries, fresh sea breeze, tarragon, fresh grass.
    • Taste
      86 86
Strong, sweet and sour attack, slightly salivating. Here, too, the alcohol is still well in check. Vanilla, plum in Madeira, cherry, plum compote, cherries, chocolate cake.
    • Finish
      86 86
Short to medium length finish. Light tannins, cherries, plums, vanilla.

Sample. First whisky from Sweden for me. It’s quite uncomplicated, but it’s not a bad start! Will keep an eye on it.
    • Nose
      84 84
Unusual nose for me… very fruity (dark cherries, raisins), quite sour, spicy, new wood notes, you can feel the 50% on the nose as well
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet & sour, dark chocolate, dark fruit, nutty notes, oak wood, bitterness in the back
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium long, quite flat, bitter oak notes, faint fruit notes

Well, this is when it all began:

During my first 50 years, I did not care about whisky at all. I didn‘t like the smell nor the taste of this kind of spirit. But did I actually know what a good whisky tastes like, or even what whisky IS? No. My only association of whisky was as a mixer with cola at the bar when the nights got really long and no other ideas came up.

It all changed when my former boss, whom I invited to my party to celebrate my big birthday, gave me the High Coast Berg (batch No 1) as a gift: Aha. Whisky. From Sweden. Ok.
So a couple of weeks later I gave it a try and I opened the bottle. Wow! What an experience!

The nose with vanilla, nuts and caramel.
The palate sweet, but also spicy with cinamon.
    The finish warm and cosy.

    I liked it!

    And so it all began.

Now, I have a nice collection of whiskies from Scotland, Japan, India, Taiwan - and Sweden.

Thank you High Coast for having led me to this wonderful sensual world of smell, taste and emotions!

Therefore it can’t be less than a 5 star rating.

Great nose, but too one-dimensionally bitter for me personally afterwards.
    • Nose
      84 84
Dark sherry profile, but more sour than dusty. Fruit predominates, raisins, cherries, plums, followed by various spices, marjoram, cumin, a touch of lovage. Alcohol well integrated.
    • Taste
      73 73
Intense, but one-dimensional: very dry with roasted nuts, then turns bitter. 80% cocoa dark chocolate. No more fruit. Alcohol noticeable, but OK
    • Finish
      71 71
Fruits come back subliminally, but the bitterness continues to prevail. A bit like the aftertaste of an espresso that is too bitter.

Tasted on 06-01-2021 in Baveno, Italy. Little too young but has a great perspective. Fair price nowadays

  10. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Blind would have thought he was a pod, there is already good coming from the country of Sweden, very well integrated alcohol, everything very and and mild, but he still cannot hide the sparkling youth.
    • Nose
sweet, slightly vinous sherry, berries, but also dignified oak, sweet and spicy, pleasant, minimal artificial fruit notes.
    • Taste
Also very round in the mouth, tending to be sweet, light oak spice, fruity sherry.
    • Finish
In the finish some pepper, again vinous, some wood. Round and also quite sweet with only a slightly bitter touch, a few gummy bears.

  11. RJKrueger scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Delicious Swede with restrained sherry notes but a lot of fruit that is worth trying.
    • Nose
      87 87
Interesting nose. In the first moment rather dark sherry-spicy, then there are cherries and oranges, almonds and more cherries.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very fruity, spicy-sweet with a little youthful heat. Some wood also comes through towards the end.
    • Finish
      85 85
In the medium-long finish, the wood tones take over, complemented by bitter chocolate and tart nut flavors.

@keizerjos no high coast never uses E numbers. It even says on the bottle that nothing is added for color. So please spare your own thoughts.

    "NO ADDED COLOR"

    Pleasant, light sherry profile.
One notices a little the youthful style which unfortunately also gets a bit paler at the back. Otherwise it's actually quite tasty.
    • Nose
      85 85
Dark fruity beginning, slightly sour, more like sour milk, some raisins, plum jam and forest fruit jam. Every now and then a little sweetened nuts, chestnuts. Chocolate can still be found in the distance. Everything surrounded by spices, cloves, pepper, a little cinnamon.
    • Taste
      84 84
Soft, creamy start on the palate. Nice subtle sparkling heat with a little spice. Nice and sweet with dark berry fruits. The fruit, however, tends to be less, the nuts and chestnuts as well as something like roasted almonds are more obvious. In addition, malty with a little grain.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-long finish, fruity-sweet. Chocolate and coffee.

  14. EvilAFI scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Great sherry casks, but unfortunately a very young spirit that emerges and doesn’t carry the nose through to the finish. Not bad, but a bit overpriced
    • Nose
      89 89
Wow, big bold sherry, sweet and raisiny! Malt and cereal undertones, light spice and slight funk
    • Taste
      85 85
Initial entry is sweet, then a young distillate profile takes over, slight bitter and again cereal notes take over (nu make).
    • Finish
      85 85
Warm, tannic, touch of dry peanut shell, still has a Sherry cloying factor which helps

This remarkably good Swedish whisky is probably not from the barrel, only golden yellow against the brown with a ruby red edge. Something from an E-number will have been used, maybe even two.
That should not spoil the fun. Powerful, sweet chocolate aromas and a sassy sour edge make this a party in the mouth. Don't come for subtle, faint accents of sandalwood, ambrosia and candied lark sweetbreads (and yes, I'm very proud of them) - that kind of nonsense, those Swedes don't do to that. Fat, fat sherry casks with thick, fat sherry maturing, that should be enough. Lakes, trees, Ikea and Berg. I am a fan.
    • Nose

      Fruity, wood, sherry
    • Taste

      Dry, molasses

      Medium length, pleasant, softening

  17. holborndrinker scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

This is not particularly my cup of tea - dark fruit, but a slightly sour taste. Interesting though.
    • Nose
      Sour cherries
    • Taste
Fruity, with a sour end note, almost like yogurt.
    • Finish
Lingers for longer than I wanted.

  18. LaddieNerd scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Dark berries combined with light alcohol notes, plus prunes, cherries and licorice. The sherry is very present. Unfortunately, the finish is a bit flat.
