Simple, yet incredibly well made. The proof is spot on and serves a perfectly balanced distillate that shows good texture and a surprising degree of evolutivity on the palate considering the age. I'd say it's a bang for your buck for someone looking for a good entry-level Clynelish that has no flaw and a generous delivery. 87+/88-

Given its youth, it's no surprise that the nose is initially marked by dry maltiness and raw alcohol. These will go off within a few minutes though, revealing a very nice quatuor of cocoa butter, banana milkshake, white chocolate and wax. Round and stable, this main combo gets added notes of dried grasses and wildflowers with time, and even a light bitter citrus twist. Simple, but very good. Few changes with water : the already obvious banana grows even more.

Excellent ! Great arrival with good waxy texture and good alcohol integration leading in a progressive and controlled bite. A little banana soon morphing to white chocolate again, evolving super nicely afterwards with further chewing on big loads of almond milk (big time, really), meadow grasses and macadamia nuts. Lovely !
    • Finish
      88 88
In the palate's prolongation, with some big obvious almond milk again, white chocolate, some maltiness and a new fizzy citrusy turn, that had been absent thus far and brings a much welcome freshness in the end. Medium length.

So far I know Clynelish only as sherry ripening from the flower vase of SV. Let's see what he can do:

    Nose:
Very fresh and herbs. Fruity, here I have more apple and pear. Rather sweet, honey directly from the forest clearing. Also rather cooling, so minty. Of course, for the Fassreifung I also find vanilla.
Alcohol is, as expected, beautifully integrated.
With water the thing becomes more fruity. However, the alcohol sharpener.

    Palate:
Very strong vanilla on the go. The painting tingles nicely on the tongue. But he does not seem really complex. Alcohol is well integrated even without water.
Towards the end I clearly have pear. Sweetness is constantly increasing.
The malt does not win for me with water. Seasoning is increasing. That's it.

    finish:
Dry. Complacent. Citrus emphasized. Minimal bitterness. Overall, very long finish, which ends in a beautiful honey sweetness.

    Conclusion:
Beautiful bourbon malt. I think a few more years would do him good. I miss the set / round which Bourbon Matured Malts often have after 20+ yrs. But it's worth trying, as always.

    Clynelish 9 yo 2010
    (55,7%, Single Malts of Scotland 2019, ex-bourbon barrel #700039, 176 btl.)
Nose: lovely marshmallow and guimauve notes alongside the typical paraffin! Also candy apples, banana milkshake and pineapple cubes. Scented candles. A pleasant freshness (grassy touches, lemon and star anise) which balances the candied notes. Hints of orange blossom locum too. Pretty great so far. Mouth: sweet and fruity again, hints of melons, lime and peaches. Hints of eau-de-vie. The oak is bigger now (pepper, grassy oak) with salty notes and light resin. Simpler but so easy to like. Finish: long, more on grapefruit, vanilla and lemon zest.

Very good young Clynelish. Not very complex and a bit different from older expressions, but the fruity notes and marshmallow (and the price) make it a no-brainer really. It seems to be sold out at The Whisky Exchange, maybe from partners?
