Dave Broom just had a sip of this one an seems to be quite fond of it. Looks like a really exciting dram!

I am not one that just things darker is better but a Caol Ila in a cask like this seems pretty unusual so you got me Adelphi. I bought one at first glance.

There is quite a lot going on here. It strikes me more like a heavy Bunnahbhain than a Caol Ila. The distillery character of lemony spirit for me is completely lost. It could also not be from Islay, just a touch of the coast and a whiff of low peat. So judged on that it is not a success. But as a glass to experience it seems to deliver all the way through - there really isn't a weak aspect.

quite a charred note; there is peat there but it is fighting somewhat against the rest of the aromas. Cedar forest, leather sofa after cleaning, brine in there as well even though probably matured in Glasgow

very concentrated - neat it takes a few seconds to get its act together. I was expecting a very dry experience, but though dry it is that very concentrated meaty aspect, like thick burnt gravy on the bottom of the roasting dish. There is also some fruitiness and a touch of nut that comes and goes - a bit like some trail mix

medium to medium/long; at full strength it is rather a meal in a glass and though slightly troubling with the heartburn it is not as aggressive as you might think; it drinks as something over 60% rather than 55%. With repeated sips, it does start to bring out a more watery aspect (or is that me salivating?) allowing you to decern a bit of curry and high cocoa chocolate

    Wow this is great!
I get fresh sherry, a bit wine-y, peat, red berries, some bacon and new shoes on the nose. In fact, there’s a whole shoe store in there, new sneakers, leather shoes that was newly polished. Sweet and after a while there’s some wood.

Tastewise it’s oily, sweet and totally mouth coating, almost like cream. Some liqorice, peat smoke and again, new shoes.
Finish is lingering forever, peat smoke, sweetish and very pleasant. No bitterness at all!

This is one unbelievable Caol ila. Not a punch in the face Islay but a Islay whisky where the smoke is complementary, not in the driver seat.
Great job Adelphi, just my kind of Islay whisky!
