The story goes that the Cadenhead shop in Campbeltown approached Mark Watt, as they felt left out at the festival-2019. There where Springbank, Hazelburn, Longrow, Kilkerran and Cadenhead festival bottles – but no shop festival bottle. Mark thought it was a fun idea – so they settled for a blend.

Rumours goes that there is old Macallan, Highland Park and such in it – but who knows. After some tastings of the initial blend, they (The Cadenhead team) thought it needed some kick, so they added some 8yo Lagavulin to the mix, just to kick it up.

Officially the blend contains 57,4% Speyside malt whisky, 5,6% Islay whisky and 37,0% Grain. The blend has married in 50 litre casks for 12 months.

    •Strength: 52,4%
    •No. of bottles: 66
•Distilleries: Lagavulin, Highland Park, Macallan, Glentauchers, Girvan

Nose – The nose is deep, starting out sweet – with notes of dark cane sugar, sweets, and some sherry notes. After some time, it gets almost winery, with notes of red berries. The Lagavulin is not dominant in the nose, there is just some distant notes of peat and pepper, but far away – gets more in the foreground, the more the blend lingers in the glass.

Taste – The taste is sweet, a lovely grainy sweetness, with some slight pepper and smoke. A bit of vinegar in the end (in the good way) and oak too, also a bit of sea salt too. A nice blend, the Girvan gives a nice touch to the malts in this blend – could have been fun to taste it without Lagavulin, just to see the influence Lagavulin gives to this mix.

One of the good surprises at the Campbeltown Malt festival 2019.

    Score – 86/100

Really like Cadenheads blends - good whisky price-wise.

C: Back in the courtyard, Drywall Jim is pouring his new purchase. He’s very pleased with it. It’s young, cask-led and very delicious and I provisionally score it 85/86 points accordingly. I run to Cadenhead’s shop to get one. Angus & co. look up as I burst in, out of breath, slightly inebriated and probably quite a picture. It turns out Jim had bought the last bottle of 66! I run back to the courtyard for the next tasting!

After a previous brief encounter with this blend during the festival [WLP86], I find myself with a second chance to lament missing out on a bottle.

N: A sweet vinegary bourbon-y [> sherried] start, so we are talking Pickleback [WLP]! Also, we have a peaty smoky contingent in the mix, present yet relaxed and congenial. It’s also waxy, fruity, and dusty – ‘waxed mangos’ making the headlines – whilst the pickleback makes another pass. There’s an [unexplored] aromatically sweet & spiced tomato-ey thing here too.

T: Oh yeah, great. Being more of an entertaining bumpy ride than a shaky one, the palate goes cask, spirit, cask, spirit, phenols, cask, spirit,….. into a phenolic almost butyric sherried fruitiness. I can’t detect the grain at this stage.

F: It appears we’ve a sherry and bourbon cask influence. Whilst there’s plenty of cask activity, it’s not obtrusive. Finishing clean, perhaps the grain talks at the death, but if I didn’t know this was a blend I probably wouldn’t have spotted it.

C: Whilst retaining its youthful playfulness, this is really well-blended juice that I imagine has far older components inside than the 8-year moniker might suggest. One of those see-it buy-it jobs, a bottle wouldn’t last long that’s for sure.
