    The nose starts with typical, dark sherry fruits, over which there is an aroma of freshly sharpened pencils. In addition, a dark nutty flavor and some balsamic vinegar. After a while, strong aromas of unripe nuts and chestnuts.

    In the mouth it is very dark, fruity and somewhat spicy. The alcohol is very well integrated.

    In the finish, spicy wood, sweetness and fruit combine to form a melange from which none of the components stand out. Finally, it ends with a combination of dark chocolate and nutmeg.
    Length: 5/10

    Nicely made, spicy, sherry-heavy malt from our Dutch neighbors, one for the cold winter days.

      First a sour tone. Can't really figure out what it is to be honest. Sherry notes follow. Oranges aswell. After some time I definitely smell a lightly spicy scent. And last but not least milk chocolate.

      Definitely sherry right in there! Dried fruits like raisins and dates. Complemented by a peppery taste. Perhaps some black peppers. And it turns sweet again; oranges en some more chocolate.

      Medium-long. Dry , and there is the sweet/sour taste again. It stays dried-fruity for a little while.

    A hefty nose, but very pleasing taste and a good finish.

      This one is a bit bready. Quite an hit of licorice and laurel.
      Besides that there is a major hit of the sherry casks. Pretty dominant.

      In the background there is also something fresh, like mint. But it is a bit faint.

      Very sweet. A little thin mouthfeel. Burst of red fruit and a bit of bread. The laurel isnt here, which I find a good thing.

      Quite pleasing to drink and more mature then expected.

      Long length. Warming spice notes accompanied with red dried fruits and some honey. Fades away a tad bitter dry, but not so bad that it looses a point.

    Millstone seems to impress me more and more lately. I don’t know why I haven’t had this before. Maybe they make better decisions nowadays or something. Anyhow I’m curious for the double matured expression!

      Definitely sherried. But not that in your face as one mighty expect. It’s sweet with a tad sourness. The Oloroso is dominant I’d say. It’s buttery and oily, thick body but still there is some youth left inside giving sweet barley with quite some refreshing notes. Spiced tobacco, brown sugar, fennel, laurel, red berries, bramble and cherries. A lovely nose! My guess is that if it had a Scottish label on it, this would be appreciated much higher then it is now.

      On the palate more of it’s youth is revealed. But it never gets seriously restless since the dilution to 46% ABV did it’s job. At first some spicy notes like black pepper and chili powder, after a while on the palate it gets more syrupy, rather dry and oaky. Barley sugar at the start, make room for quite some nuttiness in like almond and cashew nuts. After that more and more spices are building. Not sure if that is for the good.

      A long finish is giving a Dutch candy called ‘hopjes’ at first. Burnt caramel, espresso, and again spices like laurel and fennel. Dark chocolate and fresh sigaret tobacco.

      All together this Millstone is well worth buying in my opinion and would have been rated a bit higher if nobody knew this was a Millstone.
