Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 40-year-old HL

1 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 92.75 points

  1. Andytka3 scored this whisky 95 points Connoisseur

N- Cask selected by Jim McEwan that carry his usual style of boldness with edgy nature. This special bottling started off with upfront and lasting floral that reminded me of some vintage Bowmore of the 80s. Well integrated rich sweet caramel with crisp citrus, smoky carbon and spicy liquorice. Full, more oak-y smokes, honey, pepper, umami miso and mineral developed. Well stained coffee cup with a pinch of salt. Sexy, inviting and elegant. (96/24)

P- Edgy oxidized wine notes that seems off initially, but as the unique freshly grated oily lemon zest developed, plenty of peels oozes thru with superbly dry bitter-y coat that evolved to tea tannin that rounded with crisp sour notes, remarkably sleek-y. Oak driven as it should be for a 40 years of aging. (94/23)

F- Long, elegant and full. Delicate ashiness capped off with lightly briny coastal zing. Teasing salted kumquat. Warming. (94/23)

B/B- 96/24. Don't quite enjoy it initially, this dram need time to term with and may easily misinterpret.

Weighted Rate- 95pt (+1 for remarkable 40 and fact that this bottling is very hard to obtain a sample, i feel blessed)
