Chocolate, bitter orange, menthol, toffee, very good but the sherry overpowers a bit the distillate imho, very nice nonetheless

  5. DGV scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

A powerful palette of aromas, thick rich taste, long spicy finish. I would call it the top 10.

    Ben Nevis H2H
    1996 #1531 52.2% vs 1997 #91 58.4%

Overall I prefer the #1531 slightly due to the freshness on the nose. Both have equally good body on the palate.
    • Nose
      86 86
Both very similar in some ways, with #1531 fresher on the notes, more on fresh and juicy fruits while the #91 is heavier on dried fruits and more oaky and dark chocolate. Some nice honey for the #1531, with a sweet and floral background. After sometime, the fruits started to come alive for the #91, and some vinegar and slight bit of ginger. Some nice vanilla come in for the #1531.

Overall the #1531 is fresher and lighter, while the #91 is heavier and stronger.
    • Taste
      88 88
#1531 - rather bright, clean and oily. Nice resinous sweetness, tropical fruits, red fruits, taste like a PX cask to me. A little bit of dark chocolate and ginger.

#91 - more oaky, similar sweetness, more on dark chocolate and mixed nuts. More powerful, with lots of herbs and spices.
    • Finish
      88 88
#1531 - nice fruity finish, not very long but very refreshing. Some orange peel and ginger.

#91 - nice length, with more oakiness and tannin. Slightly dry, and nutty.

an excellent sherried cask strength whisky
    • Nose
fermented sourness like you'd get in sourdough, sauerkraut or kimchi, pickle juice, sherried raisins and portobello mushrooms earthiness, take your time and it slowly evolves into a way more nuanced chocolate, dark fruit, marsca cherry notes
    • Taste
extravagant chocolate fondant and wood polish, nuts and spices,

1495) Ben Nevis, 1997/2019, 22YO, #91, The Single Malts Of Scotland, Elixir Distillers
    • Nose
N- Masculine sherry influence took shape with arrays of spicy ginger extract, demerara, warm oatmeal and grounded coffee spent, with chocolate underlay and blossoming lavender, though the later bordering from being soapy, but well dissolve into nutshells with authentic dried fruits nipping thru the smog of spicy floral nuance. Feel the breeziness on weight and appeared effortless despite the pushy aroma. Opened up greatly with intensified olorosso, spicy oil and chopped shallot/garlic mix. (90/22)
    • Taste
P- Big and wild sherry run riot on a skim milk texture, shiny sweet with waxy mouth coat. No sign of the soapiness which were great, but with wee loud on the oak. (87/21)
    • Finish
F- Medium long, sherry, coffee, dates with mouthful of bitter brown candy. Dry and chewy with gentle but lasting cooling sensation. (89/22)

      B/B- 88/22

Weighted Rate- 87pt. With both #1531 and this #91 at the same score, while the 20YO shows more refinement with a total 352pt, I am leaning toward this 22YO that has shows more sophistication with a total of 354pt.

Tasted alongside BN SMOS 20Y cask 1531.
    • Nose
      89 89
Intense punch of chocolate, mint fudge and cherry compote. Some dried orange peel, prunes, plums, sourdough bread. Wood polish, turpentine and overcooked cabbages.

Apple cider vinegar, dark chinese vinegar, sugar plums in sugar water.
    • Taste
      87 87
Heavy on the sherry, both woody and spicy as well. Caramel, chocolate, meaty. Like dried beef slices with salted peanuts. I don't smoke but there's lots of tobacco and cooling mentholatum.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long and intense, herbaceous yet consistently full on chocolate. Demerara sugar, toasted bread almost burnt. Leather and spicy oak.

Am I the only one who clearly has peat in the nose and in the aftertaste? Not a lot but it's definitely there. Maybe I'm just very sensitive to peat like others are to sulfur. I also don't get any fruity notes in the taste. With all the high ratings I had very high expectations, somehow they weren't met.
