Aged in toasted virgin american oak, 12 years old, 43 percent.
An instant hit. The fragrance is soft, honey, simple but not to be sneezed at; the taste is great, immediately “more !! more!! engraving in your brain. Toasted bread, waffles, honey, a little bit gritty, The aftertaste is short and effective; you want more immediately. Rarely see a bottle empty so quickly; just always good, approachable, amusing, friendly, pleasant, tasty whisky. On to the liquor store. More!! More!!
And now, a few months later, second bottle - I stay with my position. Top stuff.

"To be honest it's not a bottle I would buy again. ... In fact, the wood has swamped the Balvenie signature so much that even when you add water and leave it for hours the Balvenie doesn't quite re-exert itself properly the way it should and you would expected to."

"Sweet toast of american oak" - a new bottling from BALVENIE, as usual in a reserved 43% vol.
A very well made whisky that doesn't hurt anyone and that you can't really fault. It works flawlessly and emotionless but I miss a recognition value.
For connoisseurs who rarely drink a whisky, an absolute hit.

On the nose rather reserved, a little sweet, a little acid, some fresh wood. Everything is very well balanced but rather inconspicuous. Yes, doing nothing wrong could have been the motto here ...

A bit full of mouthfeel, slight oiliness, nice sweetness, nice fruit, nice spice. I find it perfectly balanced, but I can't really grasp it. It seems like it is a perfect "beginner's whisky" or just an "easy dram". Great job, but without emotion.

Rather short to medium length and without edges and corners. Nothing bothers, nothing stands out. But here, too, an almost silky smooth finish.

I suspect I would've liked this Balvenie better without the finish in these deeply toasted virgin oak barrels.
    • Nose
Sure, there's a lot of sweet vanilla notes in here, but there's cloves and cinnamon too, as well as French toast, and even a light raspberry note. Finally a touch of tinned pineapple as well as a fair amount of charred oak.
    • Taste
Creamy and spicy with lots of oak influence, resulting in a little too much clove and coconut. There's toffee, butterscotch and a touch of pickled orange peel as well.
    • Finish
Lingering oak spices and a whisper of smoke with a tinge of burnt honey.

Virgin oak isn't my favourite and to me this shows why you have to be very careful with it.
