A very fine drop, this Ben Nevis! Tasted the dram alongside another 1991 Ben Nevis from Signatory (wb id 100562), which has even more depth to offer. Although this version has matured 1,5 years longer, it is a bit sharper and less compelling than its younger sister bottling.
    • Nose
      89 89
Rather earthy and mossy at first, with some hessian cloth and a metal note. Then grapefruit and chocolate shines through, with sherry influence slowly developing, including fresh/sour notes and some cinnamon.
    • Taste
      88 88
Oily and thick. Grapefruits again, with a whiff of pepper (the palate has a sharper side) and sulphur. Some redcurrants and earl grey tea develop, together with sun flower oil.
    • Finish
      89 89
Juicy fruits, including pomelo. Cacao, coffee and cinnamom develop with some curry spices. A surprising note of mint provides freshness, while the sun flower oil returns. The flavours keep coming, the finish lingers for quite a while.

    Quick hit review.

Another Ben Nevis that escaped the Nikka blends, and quite an old one too. Metallic hints of ore, mixed with dried fruits, persimmon and whiffs of engine oil reach my nose. The perfumy undertone intensifies. A flash of pepper marks the arrival, followed by a fruity-sweet explosion. Cloves, dark chocolate and menthol creep into the mix. Walnuts, lemon zest and bitter green tea linger in the finish. An intriguing malt, but probably not for everyone.

    Notes from a blind tasting
    • Nose
somewhat spicy, subtly sweet, fruity with berries but also other light and dark fruits, slightly nuts, some vanilla. Herbs still come through
    • Taste
Strong on entry, lots of herbs and fruits, again subtly sweet, nuts, some malt, vanilla, leather, some old wood.
    • Finish
Strongly spicy on the finish, fruit, some oak. Also a bit sour.

    Notes from a blind tasting:
    Yeah very tasty.
Tip was a Glen Garioch from the sherry cask with 15 years over 55% vol.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet raisins, a bit musty, earthy, strawberries, chocolate lentils, later also herbs.
    • Taste
      87 87
Heavy sherry aromas, leather, furniture polish, a little musty here too, berries, ginger, a little soapy-floral.
    • Finish
      87 87
Strong, herbs, sherry, leather, rotten strawberries.

Overall a bit too spicy for my taste. Sweet ginger sticks, pepper and a few floral elements. I like the finish best.

I love Ben Nevis, but this sample left mixed impressions.
    • Nose
      85 85
Sweet, like the candy sticks they sell in amusement parks, with a hint of chemical sweetness.
    • Taste
      84 84
sweet cotton candy and sucking candy.
    • Finish
      83 83
The same, but with a touch of chemistry.

Very pleasant and easy going, a touch of water required. After resting in the glass for 30min becomes very complex and immensely enjoyable. Sweet sherry, pantry spice, cinnamon churros.....

Poured a sample blind by a good friend... would not have guessed Nevis. It's a real modern sherry sweetie; nothing like the 96's that we've been seeing recently.

I think this shows that modern sherry off quite well. I like it as a drinker, but as a savoring whisky it doesn't seem to do the trick. You'll be surprised how quickly that glass is finished.
    • Nose
      88 88
Bizarrely sweet dram. Almost comes off like what you'd think a Rum cask should smell like. Super sugary, muscovado and leather, modern sherry fruits like strawberry syrup and touches of mint and cherry... those red maraschino cherries you find in cocktails; not the good ones. There's a hint of ginger and something like a wine gums (that's a Canadian thing apparently, much like a wine-y version of a Haribo), chocolate and some camphor.

Nose starts with melted brown sugar, stewed fruits, cooking spices, perhaps some cinnamon stick and cooked raisins.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sweet tobacco and cherry syrup. Cherry turnovers and leather, something like book pages without the dust and cinnamon candy hearts too. Raisins and more of that generic red fruit and a still surprising sweetness, rum raisin ice cream with some white pepper heat maybe?
    • Finish
      85 85
Tobacco and a touch of mint meet generic red fruits and sugar covered oak. Stewed fruits and hints of bitter herbs mingle with more book leather or armchairs and a twinge of cinnamon candy floss.

    N: Metal-y > minerally fruit-malt concentrate.
    T: Just right.
    F: Very decent distillate-mature finish.
C: A lot of people don’t like Ben Nevis. “That mineral thing” one non-fan told me. For many, Port Ellen also falls into the same category.

    In store sample

Ben Nevis is always worth a look. Another very good one, but just not to my preference. Quite spicy with lots of white pepper and ginger, maybe even a little horseradish? Prickly palate (cayenne?), minerals, wine gums, haribo gummies. Spicy, juicy finish. If you like the spice, go for it.

a good malt, but the start promised more than the body and the aftertaste gave, the dominance of sour notes in the taste and aftertaste spoil the overall impression
    • Nose
quite delicate, varnish with honeycombs and a pinch of oriental spices, later ginger and citruses, vanilla and an overripe pear come out, then go into wax notes
    • Taste
dry, woody with sourness, orange peel
    • Finish
medium duration, continued flavor slightly sprinkled with spices

Metallic with pepper. Heaps of white pepper with a touch of schezuan. Some sweetness anchoring the bottom. Definitely interesting and certainly unlike the '96s we've become very familiar with.
