Around 52%, a sherry cask stood around in the corner while this whisky matured. Islay smoke. Not too old, 6-7 years old, if not ageless, at least on the label. At first I thought of one of these sherry cask-loaded whiskys from Brühl, but in my opinion it lacked the excessive sweetness.

Immediately peat smoke with a greasy note. Grapes, blackberries, black currants. Some menthol. Looks thick, dense and full of barrels. Dark chocolate, nougat, marzipan bread. The smoke is omnipresent and all-encompassing.

As expected, it docks sweetly and smoky on the tongue. Ripe blackberries, black cherries and black currants can also be found here immediately. Dark chocolate with a good pinch of pepper and paprika. Chocolatey, malty. Intense, tasty and greasy smoke with a hint of stainless steel.

Medium-long and spicy finish. Hardly dry, but still hearty and smoky. The fruits are slowly but surely saying goodbye, what remains is cozy warmth.

Enjoyed this at my FIL end 2022. This whisky went above expectations. Very bold and mellow peaty richness with some sweetness and nutiness. Especially considering the price point this is very good stuff.

  4. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Intense, tasty smoker. Powerful, surprisingly sweet and lots of direct peat. Youth cannot be completely concealed. There were strong barrels for that. Maybe some character is missing. But a rather tasty malt of the brute variety.

For me, the best of the SmokeHeads I've tasted to date!

Since 2018, the high-proof bottling has been added to the standard range of Ian MacLeod's well-known Islay brand. With the High Voltage, the name says it all, since the single malt with 58.0% vol. comes along and was therefore bottled close to the cask strength.

An intense and charismatic Islay whisky. The enormous peat smoke is certainly not for the occasional connoisseur of smoky whiskys, because the name says it all. The 58 vol.% Push the flavors additionally. I personally like the intensity of the aromas of this whisky in combination with the powerful smoke.
    • Nose
I get a good dose of peat smoke in my nose. At first it is so present that it covers everything else and the alcohol stings easily in the nose. Other aromas slowly emerge from the background, oranges, plum jam, peat moss, earthy-mineral notes. Vanilla, sherry notes and tobacco. Iodine and phenolic notes conclude.
    • Taste
It starts off slightly fruity with a creamy mouthfeel before the powerful smoke mixed with sparks fills the throat and the alcohol squeezes properly. Spicy and salty notes dominate before hazelnuts, roasted aromas, caramel, forest honey and citrus aromas come to the fore.
    • Finish
Long. Cooling peat smoke and spices. Pepper, cloves and nutmeg. Hints of coffee. A slight sweetness mixes with salty sea water.
