Color: Straw Gold
Nose: Huge orange peel notes, almost dry orange oil-like, with some extra earthy and pasty ginger and then comes the barley sugars mixed with lemon curd and spice forward cinnamon rolls
Taste: Silky caramel galore, although more pure thick caramel and not dolce de leche, then some dried apricots and pears, allspice, custard pastries, evaporated milk and dusty cocoa
Finish: Medium to Long with dry apple slices, cinnamon, dry ginger, almonds and green tea leaves
This is a cracker of a Balblair, especially at just 10-11 years old! The bourbon influence is definitely big but doesn't overpower the delicateness and grassy elements of the spirit and the mix of barley spirit, citrus, caramels and spices work together so well to make you want to nose this whisky for hours. A wonderful dram and easily one of the best Balblair's I've had (of the few I've had) and definitely rivals the old Balblair 1990 in terms of pure enjoyment. I'll definitely be taking a trip to Balblair if I'm ever up in the Highlands in the coming years if they still have distillery casks this good coming for the foreseeable future!
