I like the combination of intense smoke, ash and fruity wine barrel (finish) very much, even if this finlaggan is otherwise rather simple. Intense and tasty, if you like fruity smokers in the low price segment, you can't avoid this bottling!

    21/21/21/22 (85P)
    • Nose
Reddish amber shimmers slightly cloudy in the glass, immediately after pouring an oily streak formed on the glass wall of my Premium Snifter. Thick and syrupy "legs" adorn the glass wall, peat rises in a smoky shape. Mountain pine and pine needles, echoes of banished wood and again resinous conifers ... Gradually the ashy smoky note intensifies, red grapes and berries emerge. Hints of sweet caramel and milk chocolate, a hint of menthol and fresh mint, minimally greasy and oily.
    • Taste
Phew ... heavy smoke lines the palate with the first sip, burnt wood tones and salty sea water follow, then black pepper massages the tongue while creamy and oily red fruits come into their own. Strawberries and raspberries, glazed currants and sweet cherries, again a slight hint of oily pork belly. Fresh mint and eucalyptus appear, then pine needles and mountain pine come to the fore, fly ash pulls through the palate, phenolic smoke comes up.
    • Finish
The fresh and smoky aromas stick to the palate for a long time, sweet grapes and berries come into their own, mint refreshes the throat while fly ash and burnt wood tones slowly come to the fore. The intense reverberation lingers in the entire mouth area for a long time before it fades away with a mixture of sweet caramel and ashy smoke.

  2. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

For 35-40 € a great, super-simple (or two-dimensional ;-)) whisky, simple concept: smoke + berry fruit, and that fits, is harmonious, easy to taste, fun, not artificial.
    • Nose
straightforward, simple, beautiful - dry smoke / charcoal / ash and intensely red berry fruit (raspberry, red currant, red grapes)
    • Taste
first fruity (strawberry / raspberry), then comes the smoke (becomes a bit greasy and salty) and sweetness (milk chocolate, nougat)
    • Finish
medium length, first fruity, then chocolate-sweet, smoke and salt remain

In addition to the peat smoke, there are currants and mainly tannins from the red wine barrel. Overall ok for the price, but I wouldn't buy it anymore.
    • Nose
Barbecue smoke with a certain sweetness. In addition notes of red berries, wood and tannins, which are reminiscent of the red wine barrel.
    • Taste
In addition to the Räuerspeckrauch currant, the sweetness and the tannins are clear. Not very complex.
    • Finish
The smoke and oak remain, of medium length.

The balance of peat and the (Basque Rioja) red wine barrel is great. For me a real surprise and a clear recommendation to buy.
    • Nose
      87 87
The nose is intense with smoke and red fruits, but I find it difficult to assign these to a distillery.
    • Taste
      85 85
The 46% are well chosen and give strength without being overwhelming.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long finish, carried by the smoke.

A wine finish, especially red wine, might swing both ways: some whiskies cope well, others don’t. Often, the sourness from the grapes can overpower the whisky, dominating the palate with slightly sour notes. In this case, it balances on that borderline. I feel the other Finlaggan finishes (e.g. sherry and port) does suit this malt better.
    • Nose
      85 85
      Fruity, slightly sour, light peat
    • Taste
      80 80
Sweet, again some sour hints, slight peat
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium long lasting, sweet & sour

In addition to the clear smoke, the character of the wine barrels comes through very well in the nose. In terms of taste, this combination is also in the foreground.
[85 - 81 = delicious --- get a second bottle if price is within the range]
    • Nose
      85 85
initially dry phenolic medicinal smoke, which over time turns into an ashy campfire smoke.
Behind it a beautiful and clear red berry fruit of currants and grapes with a slightly sour undertone (wine gum), which however integrates well into the smoke.
The alcohol is sometimes quite sharp and pungent in the nose, especially when you swirl the glass fresh.
When the alcohol has set, the berry fruit is accompanied by a slightly sweet honey note.
    • Taste
      84 84
very soft step that conveys the smoke. An (oak) spicy heat builds up well, which also hits the tongue strongly.
Then it becomes drier and more tannic, which is due to the character of the wine.
The smoke from the campfire spreads in the mouth and stays for a long time.
During the second sip it becomes more viscous and voluminous in the mouth. The sweetness remains in the background in the taste.
    • Finish
      82 82
long finish with smoky aromas (dry, ashy, greasy). The berry fruit can still be felt.
The longer it stays in the mouth, the more the smoke aroma swings into a salty / iodine-containing medical-phenolic note. Interesting.

This is one for the peat lover with a sweet tooth.
    • Nose
Sweet, fruity and smoky. That pretty much sums it up, but I'll try to go into a little more detail. Almost candy-esque at times, like one of those cherry candy canes I used to buy at the fair when I was a kid. The smoke is coastal, with hints of seaweed. Fruits? Think red berries. And lots of vanilla too.
    • Taste
Peaty and spicy (cloves and chili peppers). A hit of tar, charcoal and rubber as well. There's a touch of red wine sweetness (and raspberries) in the background, but not much. I get a whiff of candied bananas as well.
    • Finish
Sweet, candied smoke. Medium in length.

Nose: A massive smoker. The alcohol stings a bit at first. Cold campfire, ashes. Reminds me of my Danish smoked salt. Add to that cane sugar and herbs (peat). After getting used to it, I also notice a clear cherry fruit. He also has something banana - combined with an association in the direction of "mealy" and "young". This note covers everything else in the nose in places - the youth pushes itself so to speak again and again. So I let him go for a while. After a few minutes, the other aromas are more noticeable and finally there are a few subtle wood notes (clove, caramelized oak).

Mouth: A lot of power and a little stormy alcohol. Carnation, allspice. Tart herbal. Then it becomes fruity. Ashy smoke as a base note.

Finish: sweet. Ashy. It seems a bit weak on my chest at first. A red wine note develops, some chocolate, it is also a little banana-creamy. After several sips I get the idea of a tobacco note.

Conclusion: A powerful youngster who wants to be seen. And I think it's worth looking at. It brings its aromas (smoke! Cherry fruit!) Very clear and well structured.

    Blind tasting:
    Nose: peat smoke, citrus
Taste: quite sweet, peat smoke, earthy, nuances of red fruits
Finish: medium to long, sweet-peaty, greasy
    Could be a Laphroaig
Conclusion: ok, sweetness pleases, complexity can be expanded, 74/100

Smoke, oil and fine wine in the nose.
Warmth of black pepper, fruity sweetness, ...hmmm
Rather long finish of sweet oily peat.
    Marvellous dram

The red wine barrel gives it an exciting fruity note, which is pleasantly complemented by the peat.
Smoke dominates the smell and tastes less, which I personally like very much.
