Chocolate covered marzipan, sweet bitterness, some underlying jam, raspberry? Peppery. Short finish. Promising nose, little disappointing palate and finish. Guess: at say 50 abv it would improve.

  4. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 86 points Super Administrator

Glenmorangie was the undisputed pioneer of wood finishing, and their Port-matured Quinta Ruban is arguably the cream of the crop. On the nose, lovely notes of raspberry jam, marzipan and cinnamon rolls intermingle with vanilla cream, honey and hints of sage. Light and complex, the palate unfolds with mixed berries, dark chocolate and peppery wood spices, interrupted by pineapple, mint and a touch of vinegar. Lingering oak, dried fruits and nutmeg remain in the medium finish. A genuinely interesting malt, well-made and good value for money!

COLOUR: light amber, reddish touch, some copper (without dye)

    - hardly any difference to the 12 J. 3rd Edition
    - maybe a little more delicate but not serious
    difference
    - with about 50 € you should strike and try it
    • Nose
      fruity, berries, ripe fruits, plums
    • Taste
Very fruity onset, subtle, harmonious, some oak and spice, looks a bit rounder than the 12-year-old predecessor, but not as intense in taste
    • Finish
      fruity, medium-length finish;
      medium-long dry aftertaste

The nose seems very flat at first, you have to give it some time. The additional 2 years provide depth that I don't remember from the predecessor. The profile is quite attractive. Nose, palate and finish are in harmony. For me, the Quinta Ruban is and remains the best of Glenmorangie's standard cask finish series - 02/05/2022

Aged for at least 10 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks, finished in ruby ex-port European oak pipes. Non-chill filtered. Thick primary, slowly forming midsize straight slow secondary legs. Droplets. Water smooths the nose around the maltiness core and slows down the development on the palate.
    • Nose
Fruity: ripe dark fruits: cherries, apricots, plums, grapes; oranges, berries, figs, dates. Winey: orange and nutty chocolates: port influence. Cereal: malted barley, grain dust and hay notes, biscuits. Spicy: mint, dark chocolate. Nutty: walnuts, cocoa, hazelnuts. Sweet: honey, chocolate mousse, confectionary, vanilla. Floral: hay, fragrant, thick heather honey. Woody: creamy American and spicy European oaks, toasted oak. Earthy: slight petrol note, leather, tobacco, slight sulfur note. Herbal: damp leaves, European oak influence. Oily: butter, especially on the empty glass. Feints: wax. Drifting. Rich: dark. Full body: balanced.
    • Taste
Sweet arrival: toffee, chocolate, honey, vanilla. Fruity and spicy development: orange, orange zest, stone fruits; black pepper, chili, mint, clove, ginger, cinnamon, salt on the midpalate, dark chocolate. Nutty: salted walnut chocolate. Woody: mild oak tannins. Winey: port cask influence. Smoky: char. Rich: intense.
    • Finish
Long: dry: powder. Sweet: toffee, chocolate. Spicy: salt, pepper. Woody: oak. Fruity: figs, dates, orange. Winey: port. Smoky: charred oak. Herbal: leaves, cooking spices. Vaporizing.

The bottle really needed some air to open up and get rid of the typical 'uneasy' red wine smell. It's now half empty and it's opened tremendously.

To those that have bought a bottle and put it down after a few drams. Put it back and give it some time. It'll definitely get better.

This is now more in line with what I fell in love with when I tried this for the first time at a whisky bar.

My first Quinta Ruban 14, same league like the old with 12 years.
    • Nose
Many aromas to find. It's floral, fruity, rich and creamy. For me the best part of the Quinta Ruban.
    • Taste
Well balanced, the grapes from the port wine and on the other hand the oak influence. I prefer it with half teaspoon water to open up.
    • Finish
Coffee, herbs, spices, oak wood with mild tannins and chili.

Glenmorangie is one of those overlooked distillery’s but I like their style. Light and delicate with interesting flavors.
    • Nose
This nose needs a little airtime to get rid of the sharp edges. Once it did a full, sweet nose with some sour influences as well. Tropical and citrus fruits. Pleasant nose. It is balanced an accessible. Nice layer of oak as well. Caramel, brown sugar, dates, plumbs and vanilla. Lovely nose!
    • Taste
Quite a thick body. The port cask did it’s job on the palate! The influence of dried red fruits, plumbs, dates and figs is unmistakably present in a pleasant way. Soft spices like cinnamon are there as well as some ginger syrup. Balance is very good.
    • Finish
The finish is surprisingly long and also pleasant. Arabic spices combine very well with port influence and a good amount of vanilla and fudge.

I love this dram and therefore it goes straight to the wishlist.

Comparing the older QR12 to this newer QR14:

12: meat and umami, more oak, grapefruit, surgery, dust, less aggressive and fuller in taste, more bourbon, softer nose
14: sweeter? More gingerbread, more straightforward sweet tones, more malt, fresher and more fruity in the aroma,

Overall, the 14 has better nose, while the 12 wins in palate for me. They are, however, almost identical.
    • Nose
initially slightly sour, sweet orange, buns, juicy jelly candies, mon cheri, gingerbread, dark chocolate, apple tube, straw wine, caramel, berries, peach
    • Taste

    Nose:
Pleasant fruits with grapes, plums and oranges. A light citrus note and some honey. Nuts and chocolate are added. Finally, I hear a fine cedarwood aroma.

    Taste:
Ripe berries and dried fruits appear on the palate. Oak wort and chocolate can be tasted. The malt is now a bit bitter, which I don't find annoying.

    Outlet:

Room temperature when drinking: 26 ℃

Viewing Eyes: Deep copper and gold smell Nose: Sulphur smell, old wood fades a lot. Ripe grapes, pickled prunes, dark berries and pickled breath. Dried fruit bars, ebony soup, condensed custard cakes, raisin rolls, and the smell gradually becomes thick and sweet. As the complexity increases, the sense of balance improves, and the nose becomes more and more charming with time.
Taste Palate: sweet and sour, the flavor is online, the aroma of grape pulp is improved, the aroma of flowers and black tea is still the same, the balance is better, the level changes are obvious, and the Chinese herbal medicine appears at the end.
Finish: long, floral, black tea cake, honey, medium tannins, red notes, the flavor points to a clearer body

Quite a decent malt! Very approachable, inoffensive, and just complex enough to warrant a repeat visit. The nose in particular benefits from breathing a bit. That being said, it will not evolve into something greater than its parts.
    • Nose
      86 86
White fruit – apricot, grapes, and pears. A touch of eucalyptus, indicating age and oak influence, followed by black pepper, toffee fudge, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Not a big Port influence at all I reckon.
    • Taste
      83 83
Licorice, menthol, honeyed oak – pretty straightforward. An ex-Bourbon heart enveloped by tannic caramel and weak black tea. Hardly red berries or fruit, that I would expect from a port-matured malt.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium. Faint sweetness and tannic apple juice with artificial sweetener.

Very good, different for me = a bit more spicy and bitter-sweeter than the Quinta Ruban 12yo, but overall I like it better, so the additional price is ok for me. It got better, different and more complex with every sip. A top Glenmorangie. A pleasure especially for port aficionados
With 20 gtt water it became sweet-fruity, but less complex and spicy - also very tasty, but more interesting for me without water.
Once tasted after a Graham Tawny Port 10yo. In a direct comparison with a really good port, you can clearly see how much of the very successful port barrel finishing is in this material

I expected a lot more complexity. It's a rather straight forward whisky. Not bad but not a party either.

Not much difference to the old 12th of the 3rd edition.

Yes ok, if you do it exactly, you can see a small difference in direct comparison.
I personally find the new 14er a little more delicate and not as sweet as the old 12er. Whether better or worse is a matter of taste.

So rather falls under individual taste sensation and biased skepticism towards the new 14er.

In my opinion it remains the best finish from the trio LASANTA, NECTAR d'OR and QUINTA RUBAN.

Oops what happened there? The predecessor Quinta Ruban 12 years was one of my favorites. Balanced, complex, ripe, harmonious, wonderful. But this "update" here? Miles away from it.
The Quinta Ruban 14 years has almost something youthful and especially something of gummy bears. Where does that come from? On the finish a little better, but in total thin and boring. Of course you can drink that, which is not bad, but compared to its predecessor, unfortunately, a total failure.

Conclusion: delicious, mature and at the same time fresh whisky. In my opinion, it is not worse than the previous 12-year release of Quinta Ruban.

lovley, sweet, grapes, spices, fine malty and sweet tones in there. well balanced and really easy to drink but also to enjoy and search for Aromas. finish is all right. spices and sweetness mingles well. wonderful dram and I liked it better than the 12yo expressions of the Quinta Ruban.

  84. Totoro scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

    [tasted blind:]
Überfruity, with a cocktail of orchard and exotic fruits, reminiscent of young Aberlours. Very vinuous. Shifts abruptly in the mouth from sweet stone fruit to spikey / tart oak tannin; no real development. Present and intense, yes, but there's no subtlety, curiously little maltiness, and consequently a feeling that this is trending more toward wine than whisky. Feels younger than its stated age, and curiously "concocted."

Blind tasting, first dram in the evening

looks younger, less voluminous and just unbelievable than its predecessor - tip was below 10yo refill sherry
    • Nose

a lot of orange - young fruitiness - light wax notes - looks very young
    • Taste
      81 81
young and a penetrating orange note
    • Finish
