Similar to the Callisto IV you get a great powerhouse with a nice combination of ripe red berries, spicy wood flavors and a classic Islay-smoke. As the color suggests, this Caol Ila is of course only for fans of pronounced port wine maturations. However, in my opinion, the malt is never killed by the port at any time. Hammer stuff!
    • Nose
A proper flavor of ripe strawberries, blackberries and red fruit jelly determine the first nose. This dominant fruitiness is nicely covered in creamy vanilla biscuits, mild chocolate, some dry oak and a subtle earthy-phenolic smoke that I think is typical of Caol Ila. The juicy and soft fruits continue to set the tone with some oxygen. But they are gradually supplemented by pleasant herbal notes (rosemary, juniper berries), resulting in a harmonious and not as feared by the port superimposed overall picture.
    • Taste
On the tongue, the youth first shows through a wild and slightly alcoholic onset, but what can not be expected otherwise at over 60% vol. At the same time, the mouth is also flooded with sweet fruitiness, as if you were eating a spoonful of red groats. Add to that the decent earthy smoke and some dry oak, just like nosing.
    • Finish
The finish is typical of a young Islay whisky characterized by smoldering campfire smoke, some ashes and earthy-mossy aromas. In the background, the red berries are again like a mulled wine, which has dissolved on the tongue a few minutes ago.

Since I already know the Callisto IV I expected something like that in the direction. But this is even stronger, more complex, even more delicious ... in short, just a force. Even better, such a young whisky can not taste! I suspect Caol Ila has done everything right this time!
