Again a rather "dirty" representative with an exciting nose and a lot of barrel influences. On the palate and on the finish, the typical fruits, soap and tannins in a beautiful mixture. I like it.
    • Nose
      89 89
Exotic fruits, solvents, sulphur, honey, roasted aromas, caramel, grass, petrol, vanilla, overripe apple, wood, tomato, pepper
    • Taste
      88 88
Spicy, berries, vanilla, honey, malt, good bite
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium to long finish with soap, oak, pepper, bitterness, fine sweetness, exotic fruits. The alcohol is still well integrated.

Great lochside bottling, perfect amount of sherry, just before the limit it stops drowning out too much. Everything comes through concisely, no missing notes, exciting spectrum from dry and spicy to sweet.
    • Nose
Very nice combination of still noticeable Lochside flavors and very good early 80s sherry cask, baked apple, cinnamon, subtle cloves, lots of dark toffee and Manuka honey, camphor, candied ginger, orange peel, papaya in honey, saffron, macadamia nuts, honeydew melon
    • Taste
Wow, great sweet and spicy start, the best candied ginger and saffron, fennel tea and some gentian, a lot of toffee and dark herbal honey, baked apple, honeydew melon, camphor and subtle but beautiful malt and oak, vanilla and net melon, a touch of the dirty-nice lochside Note with stable / hay, just right, a touch of salt
    • Finish
Lots of ginger, fennel tea, toffee, almonds and macadamia, oak, long, red apple

A really delicate Lochside, which should be drunk on its own. Advanced age brings an undeniable blend.
    • Nose
      91 91
A very nice nose, fruity and melted.
We start with a little baked apple, slightly sweet and caramelized.
A precious wood, slightly melted, dusty. Old furniture, in an old, poorly ventilated room.
Toffee, soft caramel, cinnamon, milk chocolate.

      Slightly grassy and minty.
We clearly feel the force of age, and I wonder if this Lochside would not have benefited from being bottled a little earlier to leave a little more part in the fruit.
    • Taste
      92 92
In the mouth, we continue in the thrust of the nose, with a more pronounced fruitiness.
Mango, passion fruit, apple, quetsche, orange.
The fruit is wrapped in caramel, toffee, gingerbread.
      Cinnamon, precious wood, black pepper.
      Light molasses and herbaceous mix.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long, woody, caramelized finish (but not vulgar), with speculos, toffee, vanilla, and a very nice camphorated exoticism.

The empty glass smells a little of oddly burnt tires, and of sulfur.

Reminiscent of Irish, overall not bad
    • Nose
      89 89
Lots of green fruits, green apple, green banana, green papaya, little leafy, green house, honeydew, little austere, some herbs - really not bad
    • Taste
      90 90
Little punchy, spicy, little sweetness, little herbal, more green fruits, little leafy, pepper, menthol, lime zest - pretty good
    • Finish

Medium long, warm, spicy, zesty, more leafy, more menthol

A little restrained on the nose, but very tasty all round with multifaceted fruit aromas.
    • Nose
      87 87
Raisins and vanilla, set sherry with prunes and dates, sticky caramel, velvety oak, green pear, slightly oily-buttery and salty, orange, honey, cinnamon and clove, a touch of lavender and mashed potatoes, mango, banana, khaki, apricot
    • Taste
      89 89
soft and fruity sweet with tingling spice, vanilla and toffee, oak wood and clove, apple liqueur and quince, orange and apricot, iron, delicate bitterness, salt, sandalwood, mango, raisins, butter, roasted almonds, brown sugar, forest honey, cinnamon, banana , Prunes and dates, sweetish barley malt, pepper accents
    • Finish
      90 90
fruity with apple and apricot, orange and raisins, mango and dates, then comes dry oak with fine spice after cinnamon and cocoa powder, caramel, forest honey, oily and salty elements, almonds, iron, and finally juicy grapes and quinces with beeswax

    Lochside, rating average 91 points
Tasting notes from an online tasting with 25 participants

sweet grapefruit with some milk chocolate
    a hint of liquorice
Very balanced nose of black currant and cognac
    Chocolate, apple?
    Spicy, hot, very slightly chocolatey
Wood, a little sherry, stays in the mouth for a long time
    I find that complex
    Dates, Sugar icing slightly burned
goes down warming with a delay, slightly malty, again chocolate, wood
    Cream, milk chocolate, sherry.
    peppery, slightly hot
    slightly dry finish
    very pleasant.
with water, the finish is even more intense, slightly peppery, lingers
I have a hint of viola in my taste
For me nice dry sherry with overripe peach that has a burnt sugar crust
    now it becomes easily sharp
    definitely toasted notes in there
I have no heat at all, do I have the right whisky?
dry at the beginning, soft, then the fruit pops up, I mean it is peach
without water for me, full-bodied, spicy
If some wood becomes very pleasant when dry, now comes milk chocolate

A whisky that I found rather average when first tasting it, but grew fruitier and more complex as the bottle was allowed to open up over the course of a month or two. Originally would have only given this 89 or so, but with some time and air I think 92 is fair. Anyone who has tried and been disappointed by this, I recommend giving it a go with some more time in the glass or bottle!

Very nice Lochside that was given time in the glass at the recent Gathering. Beautiful nose and even more beautiful palate. Finish was short though.

Excellent nose. Just smooth, straight up fruit juice with no alcohol sting whatsoever. Persimmon, mangos, dragonfruit, lychee. Some people don't get the very obvious fruitiness that I got... I wonder why??? I know that there is a difference between nosing/drinking a dram during summer and winter -- during the winter, due to lower temperature inside the house, things are often a bit closed. Could that be it? I am tasting this during summer.
    • Taste
      91 91
Equal parts fruits and heat/pepper in the form of Chinese rubbing alcohol.... weird, I know. Google "Dit Da Jow". While the mouthfeel could be thicker, and the oak is a bit loud, this is still excellent.
    • Finish
      90 90
Some noticeable oak and dryness at the end. But the fruitiness persists.

[June, 2019] Another new release by The Whisky Agency and this is interesting stuff - because 1981 was not the best vintage year of Lochside but maybe things changed to the better if a cask withstood the test of 37 long years...

...but unfortunately, it did not. This is the typical 1981 Lochside profile that is rather simple and less interesting to explore but it is quaffable, no doubt. Given its high price point this is rather a collector's item.
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour is old gold and the nose offers exactly that profile which I remember from other 1981 Lochside bottlings - with lots of buttery-toffee aromas that drive this nose somewhat out of balance. Do not get me wrong, this is nice to sniff - but it clearly lacks aromas-of-interest according to my olfactory cells. The wood is significant but not dominating and in a blind setting I would have guessed a dram not older than 20 years (because of the missing complexity).
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is rather simple too, but on delicious chocolatey, toffee and spicy wooden flavours. It is not really layered but easy quaffable (if a dram at this price point can be easy quaffable at all). Water releases aromas of machine oils and strengthens the anyhow dominating buttery notes while the taste turns more vanilla-toffee alike. I like the neat dram better.
    • Finish
      87 87
The initial mouthfeel is warming and a little coating without distracting moments. The finish is medium to long and turns more spicy (peppers, ginger and the like) without distracting bitter or drying feelings. Towards the end the chocolatey flavours grow stronger again.
