    Just a perfect lagavulin…

Had this bottle before and always liked it, so different than the later 16 year.
Tried this H2H with Italian market bottle 95425, not much on it but this version is a little rougher, and the finish is not as good but we are splitting hairs.
    Still a great bottle

[July, 2022] Last night we did another of these 3M-tastings (Mega-Monster-Marathon) in memoriam of good old Roland (R.I.P.) who introduced me into the wonderful world of single malt whisky: Six people, six hours and sixty drams (small measures only, because otherwise we would have ended up at the hospital).

In such a setting it is neither possible nor does it make any sense to write detailed notes hence take my scores with a grain of salt. This was the menu after a "warm-up" with four private cask samples (not rated):

No more drams this evening! And please remember: Whisky was rather made for drinking than for herding...

Nose - smoke smoldering on the seashore, brine, old leather, tobacco, exotic wood, cutter, a lot of dirty aromas, menthol
Taste - beautiful varnishes, polish, dusty furniture, delicate oak, a touch of smoke, sea, nuts, notes of sweet sherry, vanilla,
Finish - long, fine, smoke, seaweed, charred wet wood, white pepper, some hides and earthiness, ends with dried fruit.

This gem is tasted side by side with 2019 Lagavulin 16y.o 43% and older version of 16y.o 43% from White Horse era. Let see if single malts were better in the old days.
    • Nose

2019: Soft medicine with menthol and salted liquorice, little bit of green pepper, bonfire suffocated with soil and seawater, nice soft oakiness. Sea shore rocks, orange spiciness and cake. You can clearly tell the age here. Dry bitter herbs. Burnt sausage. Husky smokiness. Aniseed. Nice!

White Horse: Drier, less tar, more salty and more menthol. Bigger and more civilized. More smoky but less peat. Unbelievably soft malt and full of soft vanilla and dry cacao powder. Antique oak, pear jelly and maybe less sherry. So different than 2019. Little bit of leather and soft christmas cake. Vanilla custard and biscuits. Just brilliant!!

12y.o 43%: A lot of menthol, sea air and clearly more sherry influence. The same toasted vanilla and antique oak is here as well as in the WH. Vanilla/pear ice cream. Soft, strong and velvety! Syrupy. Stunning !!
    • Taste
      91 91
2019: Dry smoky attack first, little bity, sweet herbs and burnt oak,

White Horse: Sweeter and more balanced, denser, cacao, stronger but little bit more civilized,

12y.o 43%: Sherried peat smoke, creamy pear and the strongest of the three. Absolutely perfect combination of sherry, vanilla menthol and crispy maltiness. This makes the earlier Uigeadails (and all the other legendary sherry islayers) run for their money big time.
    • Finish
      90 90
No specific finish detailed but just a little summary of the 3 respected versions:

16y.o 2019: Not bad but I never understood why this so hyped. Good Islay malt but little unbalanced and definitely few annoying off notes.

16y.o White Horse: So much better. Lot more balance and depth. So so civilized and yet all the power you ever need.

12y.o 43%: Mix of both earliers ones. One of the best islay noses ever. Power and behaviour at best.

P.S: Blend of all three: Quite perfect! Heck...all the mistakes are gone. Seriously..just perfect and complex and tender.

    Lovely old Lagavulin. Absolutely delicious.
    • Nose
Lovely old islay peat breathing in the salty air. Fishing boat. Hint of diesel oil. All the aromas are quite subtle, but they are fresh and aromatic. Just lovely. Becomes more phenolic with air.
    • Taste
Wow, great viscosity despite the 43% ABV. Very nitty, gritty, with a tongue-coating, granular mouthfeel. A kind of old, sweet-tasting, subtle fruit (coconuts and Fuji apples), phenolic peat that exists only in the old Lagavulins and Ardbegs. Absolutely delicious, with no fault. Sure, a higher ABV would propel this to the stratosphere, but let's not get a heart attack so soon.
    • Finish
Lots of vanilla and coconut shavings.

Wow! This is a spectacular old-style islay malt. A really complex nose with plenty of peat, iodine and salty sea air. Tropical fruits are hiding in the background. Incredibly powerful on the palate, punching way higher than its 43% would suggest. Incredibly long finish. Expensive now, but worth every penny!
