With the Triple Wood, Laphroaig goes one step further compared to the Quarter Cask with the sherry casks. This makes the whisky a little sweeter and, above all, more complex, without sacrificing strength and intensity. I find the experiment wonderfully successful. A really great malt!
    • Nose
The first impression in the nose shows directly which distillery you have in the glass with phenolic smoke. Compared to other Laphroaig bottlings, I am immediately struck by an atypical sweetness in addition to the cold, phenolic smoke. Here the sherry clearly speaks out. After that it takes me a little time for the wall of smoke and sherry to lower and the whisky to open up further. The character of the sherry becomes more fruity with dark fruits and citrus fruits now come through. The influence of the spicy European oak barrels can now also be increasingly felt.
    • Taste
The start on the tongue is very intense with smoke, light sweetness and sherry. The individual impressions harmonize very well with each other. The citrus fruits also come out again. Then the impression becomes drier and the oak brings a light spicy bitterness.
    • Finish
In the finish, the oak dominates along with the smoke. I would describe the finish as medium long.

  3. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

In May 2013, Laphroaig gave its bottlings a new look: since then, the packaging and label have had a new, modern design. This is the new release from Triple Wood, an unaged specialty bottling matured in three different casks: ex-bourbon casks, European oak casks (ex-sherry) and quarter casks.

Freshly uncorked, there is strong dominant smoke (less phenolic-medical than more smoked ham) with a lot of oak and spice, but also sherry, vanilla and sweet notes. Powerful and oily at the same time. Very long finish with a clearer sherry sweetness. 10 gtt water to 30 ml open the sweet and the sherry notes, making it a little creamier and smoother.
After four weeks in the open bottle, it rounds off clearly, takes a very positive development, the sherry notes and the mild bourbon vanilla / sweetness come to the fore more and more.
Overall, very nice, tart, smoky sweetness with oak, vanilla and liquorice.
To feel and differentiate the effects of the three barrel types. As a result, a separate, individually designed Islay malt that stands out from other Laphroaig.
I like Quarter Cask and PX Cask better

Great NAS from Laphroaig, I have this much more than the 10 year old. The PLV is top.

The 10-year-old was one of my favorites, but in terms of taste I found myself getting less and less over time.
The taste I had in mind was no longer there, and I did not smell the smell on the other side of the room when the bottle opened.
Now this was an offer, and I brought it with me.
And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and brought me back to the past.

Medicinal, light vanilla notes, smell of fresh vegetables, over all campfire scent

A little sweetness, toffee, stimulates the salivation incredibly, taste of baked cake dough, for its 48% very mild

Long very strong, here are the 48% through, again sweetness which alternates with light pepperiness and smoke
