Balblair makes decent Highland whiskys that used to appear in vintage bottlings. In 2019 this was changed and a new core range with age information was published. The 15 year old comes in a beautiful natural color and is not chillfiltered. With 46% vol. it has a higher drinking strength and will be available in whisky shops in the liter bottle for just under € 80 at the end of 2021. These are good conditions for an interesting whisky.

My Whisky of the Year 2022!
    • Nose
In the nosing a ripe whisky with fruits and herbs with a nice note of vanilla. Apple compote with warm cherries and vanilla sauce, not too sweet and a breath of air from the herb garden wafts through the room.
    • Taste
In the mouth the whisky is strong without being alcoholic. Here, too, the ripe fruits come with vanilla, dark cherries and boiled plums, then are replaced by a nice, dark chocolate with roasted nuts and roasted almonds with candied sugar. A nice sweetness carries the aromas without becoming sticky or sweet. Here, too, a ripe whisky from good barrels.
    • Finish
Chocolate with nuts and almonds stays in the mouth, a little oak, but it doesn't become bitter or astringent. Yummy.

The 15er is a mature, good whisky at a decent price that is drinkable, not too complex, but interesting and tasty. This is how whiskys should be today: good barrels, age information, no color, no cooling filtration and matured cleanly without being struck by sticky barrels. And then all at a fair price. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen that often ...

All of this makes the whisky my Whisky of the Year 2022. Reasonable price, honest presentation, decent age and a whisky that tastes good and can be enjoyed for an evening without breaking it down into all its parts. That's a good whisky for 2022.

Aroma: intense, multicomponent, dried fruit compote, sour apple, candied ginger, honey sweetness, roasted walnut, slightly burnt, highlighted skin, dry malt. Over time, dried fruits become more palpable, dried pears, apples, dates can be distinguished, becoming sweeter.

Taste: bright, attack of spices, honey, bitterness of espresso and dark chocolate, caramel, in the background dried fruit compote, orange marmalade and zest from it.

Finish: enveloping spices, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, oak tannins, orange peel topped with caramel, finishing with an echo of malt, bread crust, medium length.

    Score: 87.5

Bottom line: a rich, complex 15-year-old, once again I am convinced that the master blenders "Inver House" perfectly know their job - the perfect balance of sherry and bourbon, according to the feelings of malt, older than their age.
