1417) Big Peat, Feis ile 2019, Pal's Limited Edition, Remarkable Regional Malts - Islay, Douglas Laing

Day 24 of Lockdown - 10th April - Can someone invents a smart helmet with buttons for "style of hair cut", so we can just put it on for 5 minutes and it gives me a nice hair cut. But don't ask how about long hair, I have not think that far. No problem for Mr. Big Peat though as he has not much hair left.

N- Malt nougat with peanut, reeks, lemon candy and intensely sweets. Whelks, spicy and coastal, naturally brine and iodine. Clean and crisp, a typical blade-y Islay that can unblocked your nose. A notch up compared to 2018. (88/22)

P- Powerful, sweet, brine, ginger, spicy vanilla with drops of citrus. Dried leaf smokes and Islay style of disinfectant or sanitizer that we all have been trying to live with lately and foreseeable future. (88/22)

F- Long, smooth and frizzy mouthfeel. Ends well with Connecticut shades cigar, tobacco and medicinal, with soft cedar wood came on quite perfectly at the tail. (91/22)

B/B- 90/22 No Feis Ile 2020, so this FI 2019 will dance for another year.

This limited Big Peat edition was released to celebrate Fèis Ìle 2019. It is a rich, smoky dram with a sweet vanilla core surrounded by burnt seaweed and notes of barbecued meat. Big, intense and very pleasant to drink. It warms body and soul, not only after a walk on a cold and rainy day. Is your pals selfie on the tube?

I thank Douglas Laing for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Peat and smoke are in the foreground, nicely mixed with smoked ham, sweet vanilla and a malty note. Slightly maritime with burnt seaweed and a whiff of cold chimney air in the back.
    • Taste
Sweet start on the palate with vanilla and crisp malted barley. Then quite warming with peat smoke, seaweed, black pepper and charred wood, with an underlying citric sweetness and a touch of leather towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is long, warming and sweet at first. Becomes drier with chimney smoke, bacon, allspice and ashes.

With water: The lovely sweetness is tamed when a few drops of water are added, leading more peat and notes of smoked ham to the fore. The same on the palate where cracked black pepper, burnt oak and smoke take over. The finish is still long and dry with charred wood, smoked ham and chimney soot.
