Whisky Reviews for Glenlossie 1997 SV

Needs time in the glass. A classic refill bourbon hogshead style at top level. A bucket full of yellow fruits - european and tropical (lucious ripe pineapple) - will reward you, almost like a mouthwatering lucious still life painting.

My bottle is open for about 3 months now and only 25% full. I went back to it after not drinking it for about 4-5 weeks. The oxidation was well at work and the fruit is even more intense. This jacks up my score by 2 points.

So don't judge this dram by the just opened bottle. The first dram instantly is at about 87 points, then rises within 60 min. of air to 89. It cracks the 90 after about two weeks. 92 after 3 months. Fantastic stuff.

[September, 2018] It is very hard for small independent bottlers to get their hands on good quality casks at affordable prices these days - due to the long lasting whisky boom most warehouses are almost empty and the few high-quality older casks left are reserved for the owners, only. That is why so many IB releases are rather weak nowadays, either because of exhausted (leached) casks or flawed profiles. So it is a great achievement if such a small bottler like "Feinkost Reifferscheid" finds an above-average dram...

...and this certainly is! It is a perfect matured old-style Glenlossie with the typical trademark fruity-honey profile of this distillery. Very quaffable and reasonable priced, a great find surely!
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is old gold and the nose offers a fruity and honey profile that is both complex and impressive. Lots of different ripe and over-ripe fruits form a delicious fruit salad topped with honeys and spices. No off-note that I can find. The nose grows even stronger and broader the longer this dram breathes so take your time when nosing this beauty...
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste repeats all the delicious fruits and honeys of the nose and adds some stronger wooden notes that provide a good contrast to the dominant sweet flavours. After some chewing spices and herbs join the mix with a slight mineralic/chalky note towards the finish. Again no flaw here either. Some water opens the nose further and smoothes the taste, the dram gets even more quaffable this way. I like it best when reduced to about 48% abv.
    • Finish
      88 88
The whisky arrives a little hot (peppery) in the mouth and nicely coats it for a while with just a minor bitter-astringent moment (tannins). The finish is long and turns more spicy (peppers, chilis) with even a touch of salt. There is a drying-astringent feeling towards the end that is a little distracting (tannins, plastics) - but this is not a major deal. Some water takes this (almost) away.

    Fruity delicious Bourbon keg,
with a bit too hot alcohol note ...
Unfortunately, he is too bitter in the finish!

To buy? - No- gives better loss

A good PLV Whisky! I had this Whisky in comparison with two Irish Malts 89 and 92, and the nose was better than the nose of the Irish malts. In the taste it was still good but a little bit bitterness on the tongue and throat. Nevertheless a good matured Ex-Bourbon Whisky with a good Price ratio! I have a lot of great ex bourbon Malts nowadays. If you haven’t - don't wait to long!

Very fruity with orange oil and very spicy, too.

And unfortunately very bile bitter in the end.

I like that. That actually does exactly what I expect from such a malt from the Bourbon barrel. Fits.
    • Nose
Orange blossom honey. Yellow fruits, some of which are already exotic. Quittengelee. Mango. Dosenlitschi. Sea buckthorn. In addition, always a little Mediterranean herbs and lemongrass.
    • Taste
A mixture of oily and powerful. The yellow fruits are even sweeter than the nose. Like caramelizing the fruits. Now orange marmalade. Then some ginger and the sweetness subsides. For a nice mixture of spiciness, sweetness and pleasant bitterness.
    • Finish
Orange and pear peel. Tonic Water. Licorice.

Rich, thick, and virtually flawless in its simplicity, but also not a dram that I can grasp entirely and immediately. Puts me in a pickle: on the one hand, I would love more than a sample to actually get to the bottom of this. But on the other hand, what I got from this sample is not enough to persuade me to buy a bottle. So: stalemate.
    • Nose
Super shy and closed-up without water. After adding some: very creamy and mentholy-sweet (like the inside of an After-Eight), with plenty of citric acid and a nicely understated but ever-present wood influence. Menthol and pine. Marzipan and sweet corn - the bourbon barrel really comes through here. Pretty flawless, but also still a bit shy; even with water and upwards of 30 minutes of patient waiting, the aromas are not exactly jumping out at me, but they still seem to continue to evolve.
    • Taste
Loses its shyness in the mouth. Lovely balance between sweet and sour, with a real fruity-zesty juicyness counterbalanced by honey-and-caramel sweetness. Grass, hay, dusty oak. Very good, but perhaps (to my unsophisticated palate at least) also a bit straightforward. I get the sense that this is very thick and rich, but it seems like 5 cl isn't enough to coax out all that's here. I suspect that this may be one of those malts that benefit greatly from aeration in the opened bottle, so this sample may not do it justice.
    • Finish
The pine and menthol from the palate kick into overdrive here, so that things end both fresh and stately-spicy. Not a bad look.

[February, 2018]  A quick review from a sample to get a first impression.

The colour is jonquiripe corn and the texture shows late sticky tears and slow legs.  The nose offers the typical fruity Glenlossie profile with green apples, pears, lemons (and more) as well as some spices (mint, peppers and more).  The initial mouthfeel is peppery and just very little coating.  The taste is barley sugary sweet with fruity and spicy flavours in a fine balance.  Later some nutty notes pop up as well.  The finish is of medium length and more peppery.  Water turns the dram smoother and more approachable, I like it best a little reduced.

A nice dram to sip at a reasonable price...
