Whisky Reviews for Glenallachie 12-year-old

Tasty Malt, which clearly differs from the first batch and hopefully can keep its level in the future! For example, the 12-year-old GlenDronach has no chance against this GlanAllachie due to the new barrel composition or the apparently higher sherry barrel portion.

Significantly similar to the first batch (08.06.18). Beautiful honey sweetness and tropical fruits with a well-integrated alcohol. Add a light touch of blackcurrant jelly with a touch of cinnamon - which I did not have in the first batch. The lighter vanilla and pear notes as well as the butter biscuits from the first batch are also present, but less strong. For this, a little more oak has an effect here.

      88 88
Clearly different - yes. Strong, spicy (slightly oaky) and creamy, the malt comes on the tongue. The 46 percent are excellent. Raisins and a hint of dried dates follow; also reminds me of plum cake - yes, with cinnamon. The malt with its sweet and sour notes stimulates the salivation. A hint of pear also joins in the mouth.

Compared to other malts quite long - no comparison to GlenDronach 12, which has since become very flat - better! In the finish, the malt on the tongue is dry and spicy (balanced and not overloaded with wood!). The rose notes can also hold. Drinkable? Yes!

I was really surprised, rating comes from a blind tasting. So far, I have made a big bow to all Billy Walker Glenallachie bottlings, was probably a mistake.

I understand the triple wood approach adds complexity to this malt, but somehow I think the various tastes make it a bit too noisy and dissonant for me. My score reflects the fact that I prefer this to many entry level core range products, but like for example Caol Ila 12 and Laphroaig 10 just a point or two more.
    • Nose
The same kind of youthful greasiness I sometimes find in current HP12. PX-like sweetness, and some nondescript fruitiness. Winegums. On the plus side, it's not a vanilla bomb, but there's something a bit dirty about its smoke. Some perfume that reminds me of Four Roses. Is that the new wood's caress?
    • Taste
The peat comes in first. Not particularly rough, but there's more of it than in your average Spey for example. Some cheap chocolate marmalade candy, used clothes, and a Loch Lomond-like metallic note (although not as loud). The supermarket chocolate thing keeps coming back. I'm not entirely convinced by this punch bowl approach to casking, but then again I'm usually not a fan of triple, quadruple, etc. wood.
    • Finish
Chocolate, marmalade, and tin. Medium length.

Simply a good, full whisky, not too complex but just very pleasant, with lots of sweet and fruity notes. Pretty strong for a 46% Abv.

Sweet, pretty full nose, orange too, honey. Some floral notes and grassy, citrus, fresh.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty strong, pickering, sweet, honey, also fruity, orange again. Pretty full taste.
    • Finish
      85 85
Still pretty much tingling mouthfeel, strong, some peach and orange, still some sweetness, honey, floral. Pretty long.

Very powerful single malt. Billy Walker probably landed a really good litter with it. Now the quality has to hold up too.
    • Nose
      Very sherry.
    • Taste
Strongly sweet. I think it has a slightly metallic taste. You have to like that. Lies well on the tongue and on the palate.
    • Finish
Very long, pleasant finish in the back of the tongue - slightly bitter.

Here, too, an additional point for the price / performance ratio.
Incidentally, the color in the image of Whiskybase User matts matches the color of this batch significantly better than the photo of Whiskybase

On the nose incredibly complex, the taste is dominantly peppery and spicy with a slightly (coffee) tart aftertaste. Interesting for beginners / advanced beginners because of the complexity of the nose.

A bit alcoholic at the beginning, but passes quickly. Sweetness with raisins and dried fruits (red & dark color), grapes and berries as well as caramel and honey. In the background only very slightly banana and pear, which become stronger as the course progresses. With a few drops of water: more berries and a sweet banana aroma (fully ripe banana) and some cinnamon.
    • Taste
      75 75
very soft in the beginning, then takes a good ride with spices and pepper. The sweetness from the aroma recedes somewhat. A little sweeter and fruity with the second sip. Some raisins and nuts. A malt and oak note arrives on the palate. A little bit of coffee (bitter chocolate) will be added later.
    • Finish
      72 72
long-lasting. Spices (especially peppery) and oak dominate together with a malty taste. The tart coffee with a tendency to bitterness stays on the tongue and on the palate with a berry aroma / dried berries for a long time. The sweetness fades relatively quickly.
