spicy, woody and fruity aromas slightly amalgamated, sweet apple sensation
the palate is fruity and coarse, however, a little flat, less than on a Calvados, sweeter here, more vanilla.on it looks like a sherry lacking ripening time, a white port cask, pear sensation, candied oranges, spices come back and give a little consistency, in fact it's almost too sweet-fruity, we come across a blend a little woody and very sweet on the fig, honey, malt reminds that it is a whiskey
the final is simple and lacking in depth.

    Tasted in the living room.

Not very engaging, rather neutral. It looks like calvados cut to something else, a fadasse version of calvados.
Not bad in the mouth, the calva is softened by the creamy side of the whiskey, but no other aromas typical of whiskey can be seen.
    Just apple, not complex.

    Enthusiasm 2/5

Provides a nicely rewarding finish in that sense that you've been through a lot of bullshit before. ;)

This is not super great. It could be just fine, but that medicinal cherry is a curse. God the finish really is just like I sprayed that chloraseptic stuff in my mouth. Also, this is a hard one to explain but: the texture on the palate is fine, but the “texture” of the flavors is very flat. I may be harping on the off notes a bit too much (except for the cherry on the finish. That’s just a smack in the face). It does get a bit better with some extra time in the glass (though never fully shines). This is decent, and if you’re just throwing it back you’ll be more than fine with it. Not that it is good only for throwing back, it can be an okay sipper. It is just too flat and dull too be able to bear the burden of those off notes.

Like Orangerie before it, this foray away from pure Scotch whisky just didn’t work out for CB and me. Although this is leagues better than Orangerie even still.
    • Nose
Cherry and gasoline - classic combo. A bit prickly, though not from alcohol. Sherried fruits and honey.
    • Taste
Honey, decently fruity. Generic sweetness, but nice. Cherry starts to grow, as does an almost rye-like note. However, cherry starts to get more medicinal as time goes on. Decent texture.
    • Finish
That medicinal cherry is still there. Mandarin oranges, fresh and from a can. Unfortunately, too much cherry sore throat spray. Like way too much. A bit of an earthiness, which could be fine but is just kind of sitting on top of everything else here and not working well.

No, really not. I have a lot of patience for new make and I like to see the potential and positive everywhere, but in my opinion everything was messed up here that could have been. Had exciting and delicious experiments with apple tree barrels, calvados finish and more, but that was nothing.
    • Nose
Cider, ginger, birch sap, light honey, vanilla, some glue and gum, cachaca
    • Taste
Very youthful, young calvados, young malt, glue, grain, sour green and red apples, citric acid in an unpleasant way, light honey
    • Finish
More apple, but like the cheapest apple brandy from the lowest supermarket shelf, citrus cleaner, ginger, short to medium length

rum-like in the nose, very pleasantly dry, burnt sugar. Arrival is sweet, again like a dry rum, hint of appel pie. In the development some bitterness, herbal or bitter vegetable greens, and a light pepper in the finish. The Calvados from Christian Drouet dominates the flavor pattern in a beautiful way. Vanilla, apple and herbal spices.

    • Nose
Tobacco, freshly baked bread, cherry, milk chocolate, unripe strawberry, Fruitella in the background.
    • Taste
Pistols, light touch of dates, walnut, roasted chestnuts, dark chocolate and a hint of mint.
    • Finish
      Raisin cake with pecans.

For me this is another very nice Compass Box, but just a little expensive maybe.
Nice to have a sample of it.

Interesting nose and something else. A nice summer drink with a great sweetness and spiciness. Unfortunately, the price is much too high.

    • Nose
Sweet, fresh, fruity (apples, bananas, oranges), vanilla
    • Taste
Fruity (apples, raisins), spicy (pepper, nutmeg), oily, creamy, waxy
    • Finish
      Medium long, spicy, fruity

Interesting experiment, the calvados and whisky are nicely balanced, but I get the feeling we are dealing with quite a young product.

    • Nose
Red apples, apple juice, apple sauce, so all things apple. Sugared candy too, think a candied apple! Some orange juice notes, which integrate surprisingly well and a slight honey note.
    • Taste
Quite a harsh hit at first, peppery and tangy. Then the sweetness of the apples arrives, along with some chalk.
    • Finish
Apple cider, lemons, a medium to long finish.

  16. grinface scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

Interesting experiment, but that is what this is. An experiment. Nothing more, nothing less. At this price you will get a better bottle of calvados AND a better bottle of whisky.
The most rewarding part is the finish.

Nose: the Calvados plays first violin here, with sweet ripe apples, with the malt adding a nice vanilla, and butter touch. Granny Smith peel, lemon, and wood. Liquid apple crumble if you will..

Palate: not as sweet as the nose suggest, and more whisky like, with spices and apple peel, malty and flashes of apple in the midst of grain land. Very nice balance , dry towards the end and semi sweet.

Finish : red apple peel, wood, spice.

    Conclusion:

I was skeptical at first, but after having sniffed and sipped it a few times, I really think this is a very nice spirit. The apples and malty backbone work well together, the wood from both spirits adding a nice balance. Lovely stuff. Not sure how to score it, as it’s not Whisky, and not Calvados. But, highly enjoyable stuff.

Very smooth and fresh, hard to compair with "real" whisky. But nice experiment, tastes like liquid summer and definitely worth trying.

First of all, light sherry, which goes well with a fairly fine oak, orchard fruits, juicy pear, cinnamon. This amazing marriage is going quite well after all. In the mouth, some spices, then the apple stands out, slightly acid, Golden or Granny Smith. Tarte tatin, vanilla, whipped cream. A little ginger and nutmeg. Very good finish, quite long, gently earthy, vanilla bean, melting chocolate, baked apple. Liquid caramel.
