Launched a few days ago, Whisky Works [WW] is the brainchild of Greg Glass [SW]. WW is a boutique blending & bottling house, run as an independent arm of Whyte & Mackay. Making use of W&M’s vast stocks, WW will release two small-batch whiskies every 6 months - one modern and one classic presentation - 'pioneering new practices and investigating new taste experiences, whilst respecting the traditions and history of Scotch’ [Whiskylive booklet].

‘,… whilst respecting the traditions and history of Scotch’ [Whiskylive], Whisky Works open their account here with a closed distillery grain.

C: A robust grain, one extremely resilient to water! Thanks to Nick and congrats to Greg on his new enterprise.

    Club Tropicana in a bottle?

Like Jazzpiannofingers, I was lucky enough to taste this in a private tasting with Gregg Glass and also the guys from 23Whisky&Wine and this out of the two bottles we sampled (the other being the other inaugural bottle King of Trees) was the clear winner. An exceptional old grain, worth every penny.

On the nose it’s arrival initially reminds me of Humbrol model paints but that’s soon overwhelmed with tsunami of other things. A lovely combination of warm geranium leaves, marmalade, drinking chocolate and a huge tropical note. A big bowl or pineapples and mangoes, a few shavings of crystallised ginger? This smells fantastic. I was expecting the nose to be much simpler but the 29 years in wood have been well spent.

In the mouth, Lordy! It literally races about in the mouth, the 54.2.% abv combined with an amazingly cloying mouthfeel makes it feel like there’s no escape from this sensual assault. Pineapples, peaches, fine milk chocolates, crystallised ginger, geraniums, I wanted to say a sweet, faint smoke note but surely not? It’s so light yet at the same time it engulfs the senses, worryingly easy to drink.

With water, (and it can take it and then some!), things open up beautifully. More ginger, more hidden floral and even more tropical fruits appear. Smooth, buttery, hot damn. What a lovely experience.

As a value proposition this really is a winner, huge age, monumental flavours, smooth, creamy and extremely entertaining. What a find Gregg! - they don’t makes like this anymore.
