A lovely, old style whisky that amazes me every time. Who doesn't love or at least like this one? Everything in this dram is so subtly done, yet great in outcome. It has a bit of everything and combines those traits without too much effort. The only thing lacking here is a bit of depth, but I appreciate the dram as it is. In my opinion, the 12 Cask Strength is still the pinnacle within the core range, but this one at drinking strength and a notch more sherry influence also does the trick. Equally enjoyable and Springbank will always be a staple in my collection.
    • Nose
Unmistakably Springbank with stewed fruits and that funk you can't fully describe. Apple compote, pineapple, blood orange, overripe banana, cranberry and orange juice. This leads to an interesting mix of fudge, bubble gum, winegum and cookie dough. Then some malt, bread and almond with old books, musty basement, perfume, smoke and potpourri. Almost no peat, it's in the background. This nose combines so many elements, it's ridiculous how balanced it all is.
    • Taste
A little sharp initially and chalky/mineral throughout. Very balanced all together again. Fresher on the fruits here with orange juice, cherry, fig, citrus and blueberry. Then apple pie, salted caramel, jaffa cake and dark chocolate chip cookie as a counterbalance. Smokey malt, pistacchio, salt, vanilla, honey and lavender lead to the more funky notes like cough syrup, earth, old cheese, soot and exhaust fume. Again not so peaty. Falls just a little short compared to the nose, but nevertheless really enjoyable. We should cherish these kind of malts.
    • Finish
Medium in length. Turns a little dry with dark chocolate and a whiff of smoke.

Certainly interesting and also complex whisky, not least remarkable because of the manual work involved. Still not completely convincing for me, unfavorable PLV compared to many other 15yo, Islay-W. and especially the Oban 14yo, which offers me significantly better and more mature maritime grades.

Actually nothing half or whole, alternating between maritime notes, smoke, bourbon barrel and sherry barrel, without developing the interesting variety of Lagavulin or Laphroaig.
