Just damn tasty. For a 10yo incredibly complex and multi-layered.
    • Nose
Very idiosyncratic beginning, I have umami, garlic and nutty flavors, and have to think about dry-aged steak. Then the vanilla rises, together with a dark-looking oak, in addition a little decayed wood and damp cellar. Then there are still fruits, and not too short, greasy peach, freshly pressed lime juice and kakis. I also find a salty note that does not look maritime.
    • Taste
Easy onset, silky-oily mouthfeel. Driven by various nuts, hazelnut, pecan nut, macadamia. Peach, vanilla and oak come together, and beautifully interwoven.
    • Finish
Long finish, with strong lime, and the salt association. The oak comes over espresso and dark nougat. In addition an exotic fruit salad.

I liked it, mild and fresh. Short notes from a blind tasting.
    • Nose
Subtle smoke and fruity after pear, grapefruit and also pastries.
    • Taste
Oily, fresh and sweet, marzipan, pineapple, grapefruit, punch with canned peaches and notes of tobacco.
    • Finish
Mild, sweet and again punch with canned peaches, wine gums and marzipan.

Ben Nevis 10 years, 46%, original bottling (circa 2018). Ageing: Bourbon and Sherry casks

Nose: Dark pastries, spelled bran and nut cake, slightly burnt pizza crust, you can still smell the wood-fired oven in the background. In addition, dried apples, mustard seeds and aniseed, a hint of salmiak and salted liquorice, as well as additional oranges, apricot jam and grapefruit. I also recognize some sweetish pipe tobacco.

Palate: citrus fruits, gooseberries, apricot jam, but also plums and cinnamon. Then I taste aspirin tablets, feels the same way, plus oysters, sea salt and the mustard seeds again. In addition, some nut chocolate and a mixture of pepper, ginger and mint.

Finish: Medium to long. Dark chocolate with raisins and nuts, salted nuts, salted, popcorn, orange peel, slightly bitter orange marmalade.

Conclusion: More rustic than previous 10-year-old Ben Nevis, the 2013 bottling was much more harmonious and fruity intense. This Ben Nevis has exciting rough edges, I like it better. 86/100 points (2022)

Huge difference with the core range BN 10y from 2017. Quality of this 'batch' is significantly less.

I liked this more than the first time I tried it earlier this year. But it is still a bit too wine-esque for me.
    • Nose
      85 85
Quite winey, vanilla, new-make-esque cherry and blackberry. Reminds me of good young brandy somewhat. Some wax, barley sugar, oak, mild oak spice.
    • Taste
      86 86
Spice, gentle sherry alongside apple, pear, some funk.
    • Finish
      84 84
Winey again, blackberries, mildly diluted apple juice, vanilla, light mint.

    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      85 85
The nose is pretty interesting and delicate with notes of perfume, metal, honey flowers and some solvent nuances.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is nicely sour and based on minerality, chemical apples and some gentle honey and vanilla notes.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is short to medium, very soft with a profile of honey glazed apples, caramel and some pear peel.

The scent here for me is the most important element of Ben Nevis's signature - it's the apple-perfume profile.
    • Nose
      Perfume, floral, light, solvents
    • Taste
      Apple, bittersweet, bourbon classic
    • Finish
      Woody bitter

overall quite unspectacular whisky, sometimes even slight missing notes. You don't really need it.
    • Nose
      82 82
Honey, grain, gum. Very light toasted aromas, vanilla and rotten hay
    • Taste
      81 81
Bittersweet, honey, grain, becoming peppery, a hint of peach.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium-long finish with malt, pepper, becoming increasingly bitter

Great 10 year. Distillate forward, balanced and tasty. I crushed my bottle. Recommended.

Ben Nevis 10 yo (46%, OB, +/-2019) Four stars and a half
I’m trying to follow BN10 often. That is to say every month. I’m joking… Having said that the prices have now gotten a little high (75-80€) so it’s no B-F-Y-B anymore, I’m afraid. Now, I’m sure this juice can pull much higher prices yet when bottled as Japanese whisky! Colour: pale gold. Nose: yes, green walnuts, mustard and bitter oranges, plus a little leather and quite some soot, liquorice lozenges and mercurochrome. Mouth: absolutely terrific, salty, sooty, with some leather and some unusual kind of salted lemon curd or something. Plus chalk, walnut wine, raw chocolate, bergamots… Indeed, terrific whisky, at a prefect strength. I’m surprised you cannot find it more often at restaurants, I’m sure it would go well with food. Finish: long, perfect, on salted walnuts and lemons. Perhaps a touch of soap in the aftertaste, not unseen in Ben Nevis. No problems, that’s natural soap. Comments: good as always. Careful with the prices though, if I may. No good prices, no goodwill.

Was expecting fruity fruity fruity for whatever reason - I must have been thinking of some other distillery - and was pleasantly surprised. 2019 bottling sample.

Having read the comments about how it used to be a great 10 year old I am sorry to have missed the apparently excellent previous bottlings. Still good though
    • Nose
      88 88
Short burst of disappearing apple juice, then settled to some glue, caramel toffee, some salt, burnt brown sugar, maybe some cardboard, a little lanolin at the back. With water gets a bit more rocky, maybe a tiny bit of aged cheese with honey.

      Second tasting:
Nose: red berries, some vomit and cantaloupe, garage oil and grease, guava and brush fire, book glues, red currants, old newspapers, yogurt, pink grapefruit

Third tasting alongside Clynelish 14 and Mortlach flora and fauna:

Red fresh berries, canned pineapple, vomit and yogurt, cigarette tobacco, mango soda, pink grapefruit. With water get some lanolin bramble and castor oil. 89
    • Taste
      87 87
Palate really pops compared to a subdued nose. Pepper, hot, rock minerals, a floral burst and stewed apricots. With water a little more steely.

Has a floral and stewed fruit “pop” on the middle-back palette that I get from Clynelish 14 too which I really enjoy.

      Second tasting:
Palate: raisins, some sulphur, rock dust, after eight mints and coffee, cocoa powder, caramels and sugar mints 87

Third tasting - keep in mind will mostly taste the unique aspects not the ones common to Mortlach and Clynelish:
Palate: herbal and citric, grapefruit juice, spicy, with water: some weak mint and tobacco. 85
    • Finish
      86 86
Dried Longan honey gives way to limes, some vanilla, some minerality. Can’t find the longan after adding water.

      Second tasting:
      Finish: rock dust and espresso

      Third tasting

Finish: weak honey water and mint tea? Tobacco. 86

I tried to deal with this bottle for a couple of weeks. I do not understand what happened with Nevis in 2019. Looks like a clear alcohol deficiency. Old stocks are apparently taken away by Japan. What’s in the bottle cannot be called 10 years, it feels like a maximum of 3 years, and then on the strength. The influence of the barrel is not at all expressed, and this is clearly an ex-bourbon refil of some kind of 5 fill, no sherry found. It is impossible to compare with the old release, these are absolutely different drinks.
I must say right away that this is not a fake, since I took it directly from the distributor and the basis of Nevis is still felt. But something went wrong.
It’s a pity, apparently I’ll have to buy old releases that are still available.
    • Nose
      70 70
home distillate on the first nose, Interesting .. second nose, a sweet, slurred smell, all with the same distinct fusel notes .. After a while, weak malt and salt, but fuselage does not go anywhere. I don’t understand anything at all. A clear feeling is that I am inhaling cheap distillate.
Where is the promised minerality, dirt, grindstone, or at least derivatives of some sort of barrel.
    • Taste
      75 75
it's already a little better. The basis of nevis nevertheless appeared. The taste is sweetish, Minerality, industrial shades, some metallic notes have come. Then a little yellow fruit, malt, caramel somewhere far away. Sherry components are not noticed. The influence of the barrel, as it were, is not at all. There is a clear feeling that I’m drinking a new make.
    • Finish
      69 69
yes, it is simply absent, for an instant, a train of mineral derivatives of alcohols.

gruesome plump - I had 10cl from my specially opened bottle from the largest German mail order company - I know quite a few 20 € malts that are much more delicious. The sale to the Asians has probably led to the old barrels that previously ended up in the bottling - (it tasted like 96 single tasks after the design change - for me that was 20yo ++ malt) - now all flow into Japanese blends - which I have here for Get 50 € is a cheek - don't buy it!
    • Nose
      82 82
now looks like the number on the label - a shadow of its old size from the design change

metallic missing note - also has an alcoholic effect
    • Taste
      70 70
metallic bitter - looks even younger than 10 years
    • Finish
      70 70
      bitter - somewhat fruity

Still great value and tastes a bit older than 10 years, but less emphatic than previous batches. Tasting this side by side with a bottle with old label circa 2017/18 and there's a pretty noticeable difference. The older bottle lasts longer, is more complex and has more well integrated notes.

However given how unique and robust this still is you can just add some older BN stock (doesn't need to be too much or anything amazing) to the bottle to get it tasting pretty good!
    • Nose
Roasted coffee beans, umami, sour baby vomit, macademia and brazil nuts, rotting peaches, dunnage warehouse. A bit alcoholic even though it's only 46%
    • Taste
A brighter onset with peaches and nectarines, with the mid palate being very similar to the nose and a bit alcoholic. The notes are mildly astringent-especially the coffee one
    • Finish
Medium. Mostly on ground coffee beans, woody (not overly, more of an antique-kind), salty and peaches (like the aftertaste of eating a peach) for the final lingering note.
