    Tasted at the distillery.
As with the 12YO, 46% and no filtering makes all the difference.
Everything is crancked up a bit from the 12, but I'm not sure if it is on a level that can justify the difference in price.
    • Nose
      84 84
Not that different from the 12YO, but it has gained a little in both depth and refinement.
Not quite as sweet, but the fruit is more expressive and complex.
Here as well is an underlying carpet of something darker with a touch of spice.
    • Taste
      86 86
Rounded, with everything well matched and integrated.
Same fruits as in the 12, but add a bit of apple.
Richer, rounder, and maybe a tad bit less sweetness.
    • Finish
      85 85
Again compairing to the 12, this is rounding off in the same civilized way, staying a little longer. Medium++

C: Quality juice from dominant casks. Indeed, the spirit is caked in oloroso! Funny that, as when I last tried the official 15yo in 2019 [WLP84], I found it to be bourbon-cask-centric and distillate-led. This more [seasoned] sherry cask-forward version may well change over time in the bottle. Price is the other factor!

A charming and captivating whisky with good balance. Out of all Balblair's regular line, this one is my favorite.
    • Nose
Fresh, rich with hints of dried fruits, pastries and berries. The chocolate note, spices and cigar leaves are felt deeper.
    • Taste
Sweet berry, sherry, chocolate, astringent with pleasant tannins.
    • Finish
Medium length, soft, with bright tones of cherry, dark chocolate, rum-baba. At the end, delicate echoes of oak and almond appear.

    S 5
Rich & deep sweet nose with complexity, spice is carried from palate to finish. Not much of sherry cask influence, either finished with short period / it’s Fino.

    N 26
    Plenty of juicy fruit
    Vanilla
    Citrusy
More honey developing in the background

    P 24
    Malty
Oak spice raising, even more when left to breathe
    Hint of bitterness

    F 23
    Dry, mid-short finish
    Warm spice lingering, slightly peppery
A hint of nutty at the end

We tried the 12, 15 and 18 year olds at the whisky fair in Pfäffikon. We were not very convinced of any of them.
    • Nose
Compared to the 12 year old, I find this fruity on the nose. Mandarins and vanilla, I mean to find a little weird note again ...
    • Taste
Yes, it also tastes a bit soapy, it is also a bit spicy. The aroma is more beautiful than the 12: vanilla, honey, mandarins, pear, tropical fruits.
    • Finish
Honey, vanilla and some fruit. The finish is sharp and soapy, at least short;)

A nice, well balanced malt with great exotic fruits. The sherry barrels initially remain discreetly in the background, but then add another interesting component to the profile. I also really liked the constantly changing impressions in the finish.

    Detailed tasting notes:
    https://www.aboutwhisky.de/tastingnotes/balblair-15-jahre/
    • Nose
Aromas of sweet and sometimes exotic fruits fill the air. I am reminded of pears, mango and passion fruit. In addition, typical bourbon aromas such as honey, caramel and a hint of vanilla. After a while it becomes slightly spicy and a little bit tart with sweet pastries, marzipan and lemon cream. After the first try, the nose becomes a little drier with a hint of dried fruit - the sherry barrels come through. The caramel note becomes more intense.
    • Taste
It is also very sweet and fruity on the tongue. The exotic fruits are difficult to separate from each other, I am going for passion fruit again. I can also find the lemon cream again. Then comes some oak, as well as almonds, caramel and milk chocolate. The mouthfeel will then be a little drier.
    • Finish
The sweetness goes down significantly in the finish. There is a slight bitterness, but interestingly it fades before the other flavors. Tropical fruits and citrus fruits stick together with the milk chocolate until the end.

  15. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

I think the nose is great, the rest is also good, but also a bit arbitrary. Nice good whisky.
    • Nose
immediately very sweet and very fruity. Formally jumps at you. Ripe apples, ripe sweet fruits in general, with a little oak spice. The sherry barrel is available, but is a bit restrained in terms of flavor.
    • Taste
nice start, immediately sweet, but also more oak, pronounced nutmeg note and a little cocoa.
    • Finish
The finish becomes drier, malty and a little beerier. The fruit notes are still there, the oak and malt dominate.

  16. ThorstenH scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

In 2019 I gave him 88 points. Now, 2 years and 200 other whiskys later I have to revise that. 86 points could be justified.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fruity, floral, not very intense, not intrusive.
    • Taste
      86 86
Fruity and mild, but also unobtrusive.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is even rather long with a good fruit sweetness.

This is my second "approach" to tasting this whisky. And while the first one made a very poor impression on me, including alcohol that is too visible in both aroma and taste, the latter is different and deserves this whisky more. Alcohol completely hidden, a lot of sweetness, dark chocolate and fruitiness, make you want to reach for another dram. Even after emptying the glass, it still smells and keeps the aroma of this whisky for a long time.
My intention was to buy the 18-year-old version, but if after the first time I rejected my idea completely, now I am going to come back to it with the effect of implementation.
A small downside .... The price is quite high for this 15-year-old whisky. Thanks to the rebates and discounts, I paid 30% less than the market price for it. And this is what I think it should be.
    • Nose

    • Finish

What happens when you take a relatively mild highlander and put it predominantly in bourbon casks for 15 years and don’t mess it up? This happens. Nice, well balanced but not complex. The nose is better without water.
    • Nose
      82 82
Apple juice and bourbon. Char. Glue. Lemon zest. Honey. Sea shells. Light rose or garden flowers. A little brackish. Water kills the nose to gluish.
    • Taste
      83 83
Palate: unripe apples and then sweet malt and nuts and corn nuts. Gravel and sugar. No change with water
    • Finish
      82 82
Finish: vanilla baked lemons and some sea shells more sugary with water.

Balblair 15yo 46% official bottling. Very dark orange. Aroma suggests wine casks. Dried raspberry, earth, mostly red fruit, some dense stone fruit, not a trace of spirit or a rough edge. Slight vanilla suggesting custard and some trifle. Outstanding clarity of delivery in the aroma. Taste is juicy, lots more deep fruity notes, extremely clean spirit and rounded cask character. It's good. I mean it's a very good commercial malt. Loads of fruity cask character with a subtle smoke. The oak isn't showing up offensively and yet it's very cask-led. The quality is great; perhaps the character is not that complex, and it does feel a little watery and un-challenging at times, but it's very well-judged and they took a good decision in not watering it down further. 50% ABV would be really great here. Subtle peat lingers. Very well done. A lesson in balance.

The 12 has really come into its own after 3 additional years of aging. Really nice interesting nose with layers, and delicious palate as well. The finish was a wee bit disappointing, but again I've tasted worse for a higher price.

That being said, Balblair's entire range is one the higher side, and while the 15 is a really good addition to a collector's bar, I'm sure there are better Highland-based options for the price.
    • Nose
      86 86
Nice amber color. Sharp fruity notes; a whole basket of fresh tropical fruits. Notes of orange peel, honeydew melon, light hint of lemon and bananas. Sherry influence is apparent. If left to sit for 10 minutes, and after getting accustomed to the initial nose, some deeper dark fruit layers appear, along with some dry fruits like prunes, and a hint of walnut.
    • Taste
      82 82
Surprisingly not much fruit on the palate. Starts off with floral notes, like chewing a jasmine petal. Some lavender side notes. Cinnamon is present, and some lingering black pepper which gets stronger the more time in the mouth.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium finish; burst of spice right from the start, strong hints of cinnamon and star anise, can feel the char in the barrel almost, oakiness comes to the fore shortly after and finishes off with a leathery note much like the 12.

To begin with, bourbon, vanilla, honey and caramel flavors. Hmm, what is a "1st Fill Spanish Butt"? So a lot of sherry (fruit, nuts, etc.) doesn't come through in the nose. However, a noticeable flavor. Maybe fresh French oak barrels? Phew, quite possible, at least judging by the taste. This is almost rustic wall unit. All in all, it all looks a bit artificially modern superimposed. Have the bad barrels of the 12-year-old been polished up here (how "felt" at many distilleries)? But I don't want to be too critical here, that would be unfair. We have a reasonable, calm, but voluminous, but not too complex everyday whisky. If you can put away the noticeable oak, you will definitely enjoy it here. I basically like it - I find it pleasant. After a while, some fruitiness slowly comes through. 60-70 € is simply too much money for that. There are significantly better drops for a significantly lower price.

A fruity bomb which, as such, can be very pleasing or completely repulsive. It is not a pimp, of course, but the sherried influence is perhaps a little invasive, at the expense of balance.
    • Nose
      83 83
This whisky was only finished in ex-Sherry casks, and maybe it's because they are first filling, but on the nose you can feel them a lot: ripe fruit in profusion with peaches, plums and red fruits, nutmeg and a marked balsamic accent, sweet and fresh at the same time. Almost like a tart. Wood chips in the background.
    • Taste
      80 80
And the fruit remains queen also on the palate, a warm and dense scent of jam that permeates the mouth, with a touch of caramel and a light alcoholic puncture. Raisins, black cherries, red apple. Very full, on the threshold of tiredness. Still wood in counterpoint, with a touch of almond.
    • Finish

I admire Serge’s concise take on Inverhouse’s new direction in 2019 – ‘Balblair just fell in line‘ [WF]. Spare a thought though for Balblair sales ambassadors who have had to face the music from frustrated fans. Let’s see what the new range has to offer, starting with the 15yo.

C: It’s nice, it’s distillate-led and current Glenallachie fans should relate. Similar in calibre to the 2005 vintage [WLP84], there are improvements whisky-wise, from Balblair’s [first release] 2003 vintage [WLP82]. Price-wise in the UK, we’re looking at an approximate price increase of  57% over comparable aged vintage releases.

Part 2/8 of a Balblair range share. The 12yo was a very decent ‘liquid business card’. That makes me curious to the 15 & 18yo.
    • Nose
Immediately I smell a lot more sherry oak compared to the 12yo. It gives more depth to the nose. Also sawdust is present again. It’s a little sparkling/alcoholic in the nose. Some toffee and cocoa. There is still freshness going on.
    • Taste
Taste wise you get the couple of years extra in the cask. It’s fuller and more intense. Red fruit and candy sweetness. Also honey and apple are there. Light oak flavors and a little darker orientated. Dark chocolate. Quite herbal as well. I get some dill and a touch of basil. Water makes it more creamy.
    • Finish
Finish has a medium-long length. Mainly red fruits again and some spices like pepper. It seems to be just a wee aggressive. A rather sharp and bitey mouthfeel remains at the very end. The Spanish oak clearly sets the mark here.

I am still quite unexperienced with Balblair but I’d say that the distillery character is a little less present and it’s more a cask driven expression, to set a clear difference between used wood types. Not sure which to like better. I tend to say the 12yo.

On the nose, a little sour, citrus, butter, traces of nutty funkiness. Not a whole lot going on there. On the palette, it has quite a sugary entry which gives way to some rather tangy and bitter orange marmalade. I also felt the dram goes a tad flat or watery in the middle. Quite a spicy finish.
Well all in all a reasonable enough number if rather unmemorable. Methinks the Balblair 12 is one better.

Little impressive whisky. Nicely made, but too unremarkable.

Short finish, nuts and spicy. Given the taste notes, it seems very complex, but the whisky doesn't catch me.

N- Citrus dances harmonizely on the firm layer of dark sherry. Spices of paprika, milky vanilla and crushed herbs joins the sweet floral notes with soothiness and comfort. (88/22)

P- May feel softer on texture despite not at all weak, notes of spices, juicy ripe fruits go the distant and expressive in a fine manner, but the sherry influence faded out abruptly. (87/21)

F- Medium long, mellow, creamy fruit and remains peppery at the tail. (86/20)

    B/B- 87/21.

I liked it better than the 12er
    balanced
delicious and tasty I would say
    an easydrinking malt
    • Nose
Sherry, raisins, dark, sweetness is getting stronger, vanilla, baked apple, minimal oak / wood, spices (cinnamon !, nutmeg?)
later: Apfelmuss, lemon, the vanilla is really herlich
from 1920 Blendersglas: dark wood, more sweetness, red wine, very spicy, even more vanilla, banana, to the end quite tart lemon (nschale)
    • Taste
full and silky on the palate
sweet, spicy, light oak becomes more, caramel, slightly vanilla, cinnamon, apple
later bitter, citrus notes, wood from the pencil (without the graphite !!)
    • Finish
      medium to long
Sherry, sweet, light oak gets more, toasted, bitter and dark chocolate

Nose: Quite rich, with baked apples, drizzled with honey and spices (cinnamon, cardamom), and some sultanas on top. A hint of citrus which balances the apple sweetness, maybe a touch of ginger bread.

Palate: The baked / cooked apples are still very dominant, with more of the dried fruit , some chocolate and toffee, and wood. The official notes speak of tropical fruit, but I must admit I fail to find those notes here..

Finish: Oak, dried fruit (date, raisin) and orange jam.

Conclusion: Quite a different animal than the 12 year old. the ex-sherry finishing has really had a big impact on the liquid. Quite heavier and chocolate-y with the dried fruit and apples combining well. Well made

The oak forms a nice counterpoint to the strong bright fruits. Beautifully made and balanced whisky. These beautiful cinnamon and apple notes that together make applesauce please me exceptionally well.
    • Nose
Vanilla together with light fruits, sweet red and green apples, juicy pears, peaches and apricot. The oak is pleasantly in the background, but is always present. Again and again a cinnamon note comes through, and I have to think of warm applesauce. Also some new leather and a hint of lemon.
    • Taste
Moderate onset, silky mouthfeel. Also on the palate immediately the thought of applesauce with cinnamon. Beautiful vanilla, the oak announces itself with spicy notes and hazelnuts. The apricot is also still clearly.
    • Finish
Medium. The hazelnuts and dark chocolate make me think of dark nougat chocolates. Spicy oak. Some peppery lemon leaves the tip of the tongue tingling for a while.

    Tasted in the living room

Very in phase with the 12 years in term of nose. Quite fresh, with extra notes of leather.

On the palate, a little richer, deeper and greedy than the 12 years old.

    Enthusiasm 3/5

Only a little pickering in the throat, again lot's of peach. At first pretty long, but after some time the finish is getting longer en longer, with peach, some honey and wood hanging around for a pretty long time.

It is immediately rich in fruit, quite fatty and delicious. Vanilla and white fruits, would there be a finish in bourbon barrels? Pear, apple, but also banana, guava, mango. A pinch of various citrus fruits. On the palate, the same music, a festival of ripe fruits, it remains very pleasant. All coated with honey. Good finish, quite long, woody and caramelized. A little dark chocolate with orange, it's almost earthy. Cocoa beans, mocha, chicory.
