  1. Defeatless scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Tasted in a Balblair range share tasting. This is quite a step upwards from the 12yo.
    • Nose
      86 86
Smells way better then it's 12yo younger sister. This one has nice vanilla and cream notes. Some red berries and a hint of fudge. After a while a lot of fruity notes show up.
    • Taste
      85 85
Nice and thick mouthfeel A little dusty. Sweet and sour. Some apples and pears. Some dried fruits. Overall this is a fruity flavour.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium length. Again sweet and sour, a bit dusty and some orchard fruit.

I admire Serge’s concise take on Inverhouse’s new direction in 2019 – ‘Balblair just fell in line‘ [WF]. Spare a thought though for Balblair sales ambassadors who have had to face the music from frustrated fans. Let’s see what the new range has to offer, starting with the 15yo.

C: It’s nice, it’s distillate-led and current Glenallachie fans should relate. Similar in calibre to the 2005 vintage [WLP84], there are improvements whisky-wise, from Balblair’s [first release] 2003 vintage [WLP82]. Price-wise in the UK, we’re looking at an approximate price increase of  57% over comparable aged vintage releases.

    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      86 86
The nose is open, deep and promising with notes of brown raisins, prunes, chocolate, burnt sugar and bakery.
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste is sweet and slightly sour with hints of dark dried fruits, prunes, plum jam and some caramel nuances.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is medium lenght and spicy with a profile of bourbon barrel followed by chocolate and cacao.

overall a nice dram with a fruity and honeyed profile
    • Nose
      87 87
pastry, malty, nuts, almond, pears and apricot jam, slightly honeyed. reminds me a bit of another distillery beginning with Bal and not ending with Blair.
      Good news so far
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty much the same as on the nose. Perhaps a tad less fruity and getting a wee bit dry, but not really. Malty, slightly caramely, nutty.
    • Finish
      86 86
      medium to long, slightly peppery

  6. peatbogger scored this whisky 85 points Specialist

    Tasted at the distillery.
As with the 12YO, 46% and no filtering makes all the difference.
Everything is crancked up a bit from the 12, but I'm not sure if it is on a level that can justify the difference in price.
    • Nose
      84 84
Not that different from the 12YO, but it has gained a little in both depth and refinement.
Not quite as sweet, but the fruit is more expressive and complex.
Here as well is an underlying carpet of something darker with a touch of spice.
    • Taste
      86 86
Rounded, with everything well matched and integrated.
Same fruits as in the 12, but add a bit of apple.
Richer, rounder, and maybe a tad bit less sweetness.
    • Finish
      85 85
Again compairing to the 12, this is rounding off in the same civilized way, staying a little longer. Medium++

    Tasted in the living room

Very in phase with the 12 years in term of nose. Quite fresh, with extra notes of leather.

On the palate, a little richer, deeper and greedy than the 12 years old.

    Enthusiasm 3/5

    Whisky n ° 2032

  8. vlad78 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

A rather peculiar drink, sweet with spices.
    • Nose
Baked red apple with cinnamon, fresh yellow apple, hazelnuts and spices, sharp.
    • Taste
Sweet, sharp, vanilla and cinnamon, eclair and apple.
    • Finish
Sharp, sweet, fruity, laced, of medium duration.

  9. HokkaidoUni scored this whisky 82 points Expert Junior

What happens when you take a relatively mild highlander and put it predominantly in bourbon casks for 15 years and don’t mess it up? This happens. Nice, well balanced but not complex. The nose is better without water.
    • Nose
      82 82
Apple juice and bourbon. Char. Glue. Lemon zest. Honey. Sea shells. Light rose or garden flowers. A little brackish. Water kills the nose to gluish.
    • Taste
      83 83
Palate: unripe apples and then sweet malt and nuts and corn nuts. Gravel and sugar. No change with water
    • Finish
      82 82
Finish: vanilla baked lemons and some sea shells more sugary with water.

  10. The_Osprey scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Balblair 15yo 46% official bottling. Very dark orange. Aroma suggests wine casks. Dried raspberry, earth, mostly red fruit, some dense stone fruit, not a trace of spirit or a rough edge. Slight vanilla suggesting custard and some trifle. Outstanding clarity of delivery in the aroma. Taste is juicy, lots more deep fruity notes, extremely clean spirit and rounded cask character. It's good. I mean it's a very good commercial malt. Loads of fruity cask character with a subtle smoke. The oak isn't showing up offensively and yet it's very cask-led. The quality is great; perhaps the character is not that complex, and it does feel a little watery and un-challenging at times, but it's very well-judged and they took a good decision in not watering it down further. 50% ABV would be really great here. Subtle peat lingers. Very well done. A lesson in balance.
