Whisky Reviews for Secret Speyside Distillery 2002 MBl

Great sherry malt (allegedly Macallan) of almost perfumed elegance in the aroma with sour cherry, plum jam, raisins and other fully ripe dark fruits.
The mouthfeel is creamy, voluminous, delicate and - I can not put it another way - overwhelming: sweet fruity sherry with a whole fruit basket of ripe dark fruit notes. The 54.8% alcohol provide the optimum flavor concentration for my taste and that without any alcoholic burning, but invite you to experiment, because the whisky opens with a few drops of water even further and delivers brighter and beguilingly sweet flavors.
The finish is long, warm, sweet and fruity.

Spoiled by the complex and dreamy nose, I am looking forward to the first sip. Unfortunately, the taste can not quite keep up with the sugary and fruity nose and is rather characterized by harsh and dark aromas. Only after a while fruity and sweet elements appear in the taste, the partly dominant menthol note provides a fresh wind and heats up the interplay of flavors on. The wonderful hints of leather, cedar and sweet tobacco leaves remind me of Grandpa's cigar box. A really successful filling, creamy with dark sherry flavors and roasted nuts. Tastes and I like it very much! I can not tell you if this Secret Speyside really is a Mac, with the creamy (distillery) character and the dark sherry aroma going in the direction of Macallan. Whether this is a Mac or not Mac I personally do not care, but it is important only that this bottling is incredibly delicious and tastes ...

    • Nose
Intense and deep dark amber glitters in the glass, on the glass wall of my Premium Snifters stick oily "legs". Voluminous and powerful, dark prunes and dried caramel rise up, roasted hazelnuts play with dried almonds and creamy toffee. Zest from old orange peels fall on caramelized sugar, hints of leather and cedar wood rise with sweet, dried tobacco leaves from the open cigar box. Already, my saliva is stimulated massively. Sweet fruit flavors in the form of sun-ripened apricots and raisins flatter with the wonderful tobacco and leather aromas of the nose, in slow motion are added sweet cherries and blackberries. A touch of menthol in combination with old mint is minimal, hints of minimal sulfur with associations of musty and decayed cellar round off the wonderfully harmonious nose. The alcohol is harmoniously integrated and shows off its elegant side. Nut chocolate invites demanding to the first sip.
    • Taste
Dark, slightly tart fruit flavors combine with the first sip with spicy wood tones on the tongue, a slight buffle arises on the tip of the tongue. Slowly sweet berries and wet leather dissolve on the voluminous aroma cargo, dark chocolate and espresso immediately stimulate the salivation. Abrasion of orange peel and minimal hints of citrus fruits starts an interplay of different flavors. Dark sweet berries, sour cherries, hazelnuts, leather, tobacco, espresso, dark chocolate, raisins and lightly burnt sugar stick to the tongue while spicy oak tones flatter the palate. The second sip is much creamier and sweeter at the beginning, but then changes and slightly bitter and bitter aromas gain the upper hand. Menthol and citrus fruits once again stimulate salivation with wet leather, espresso and dark chocolate. Subtle tingles on the tongue and palate, old walnuts dissolve while creamy wood elements in the saliva swim under the tongue. With dark fruit notes and tart wood notes blurring taste and aftertaste.
    • Finish
Chubby warm stick sour cherries and raisins on the palate, leather and tobacco are also in the aftertaste, dark orange and a fresh menthol note provide variety in the aftertaste. From time to time the pleasant sharpness flickers and heats up the palate, nuts and dark chocolate come up. Even in the end, the interplay between sweet-fruited and tart aromas whets the appetite for more. Citrus fruits and menthol have been refreshing the palate for a few moments now, with tart walnuts and a touch of furniture polish, the finish is slowly starting to leave, and finally it massively stimulates salivation.

Nose: Full on dried tobacco, a bag of raisins and roasted nuts, black cherries, menthol cigarettes, air dried italian ham rubbed in spices like oregano, thyme and fennel. Lemon verbena. Leather, meaty rancio. Mature, rich and enticing nose. It's one. This smells almost like a recent official Mac18 but in cask strength, so obviously way more intense and full bodied. A Mac dialed to eleven.

Taste: Orangeskin, sweet cherries, dry tobacco, Latte macchiato, brown sugar, nutty oloroso, leather, grilled steak, roasted nuts, slightly astringent. This is perfectly balanced between dark, fruity aromas and more meaty and salty umami touches. Very complex. You can take a few sips and still discover something new.

Comments: And the next stunner by the Maltman. This one is not as sherry-supercharged as its 14y. and 16y. precursors, therefore more complex and accessible. After 16 years in oak, you still get some of this lovely floral and slightly rough destillery character that matches perfectly with a good sherrycask. You just can't beat time and a good cask in my opinion. Open your bottle and enjoy this juice. Life is too short anyway :) Danke Bowi!

thick syrup of dark berries, sweet, raisins, mazipan, quite a lot of fruit, develops nicely over in the glas over some time. complex on the palate, some spices kick in, some pepper, finish is all right and the different Aromas mingle and fade away slowly. that is some real treat!

A dream of a whisky, the flavors fit together perfectly, and complement each other wonderfully, to homemade gingerbread with orange peel, raisins and hazelnut pieces.
    • Nose
A wonderful fruity sweetness flows sweetness pouring out of the glass, candied oranges, raisins, dried figs. In addition, there are nuts and roasted aromas, roasted almonds, roasted hazelnuts, dark nougat and caramel. Slowly the oak rises, bringing with it Christmas spices, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and cardamom. Also some leather and sweet Virginia tobacco.
    • Taste
Strong, very sweet start. Oily / sticky mouthfeel. Orangeat, raisins, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, plus a chocolate with about 50% cocoa, I have to think of the homemade gingerbread from my mother. Then mix the oak and bring some pepper, roasted hazelnuts and dark nougat. In addition, a menthol note spreads, bringing with it a nice freshness that makes a great counterpoint to the heavy, dark aromas.
    • Finish
Longer finish, again the roasted almonds and roasted hazelnuts. Oranges, lemons and menthol make the finish very fresh and pleasant. Lightly peppery oak flavor is long on the tongue. Espresso.
