Old style whisky. Offers more than the usual 10 year olds. The high price is also justified.
    • Nose
      90 90
First: sherry, malt sweetness, wood and flower meadow. Carnation, nutmeg, plum and lighter fruits such as ripe pear and apple are added. Lychee and exotic fruits such as mango, also herbs. Some furniture polish. You always discover new nuances.
    • Taste
      89 89
Soft on the start, lemon, exotic fruits, plum, malty, cinnamon and nutmeg. Light grapes and fruit cake. Spicy and mouth-filling.
    • Finish
      88 88
A minimal tingling on the tongue, slightly astringent. Medium-long finish, at the end the fruit aromas and oak seasoning remain.

So this is not a cup of coffee at all. The whisky just doesn't appeal to me. And I'll put it in series with Mortlach, Glen Elgin, Glen Grant. It's not explicitly zoé whisky, but I don't know why I would drink it. In flight with Nikka from the Barrel 88b and Jameson Black Barrel 90b.

For just over 60 euros, this drop is worth every penny. Incredibly round and soft despite 46%. Great complexity of the fruits and spice aromas. Rarely such a soft and harmonious finish with a whisky.
    • Nose
      88 88
Strong orange aroma, very subtle oak, some kiwi, dates & raisins, lychee, slightly tart nuttiness, citrus fruit peel, slightly sweet, some coconut oil, shortbread, some mango, light notes of shoe polish
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong orange pulp, spicy, strong oak influence, slightly to medium sweet, pepper, very nutty, honey, subtle notes of caramel, dark chocolate, lychee, slightly hot (pepperoni?), herbs
    • Finish
      89 89
medium-long, very fruity, light roasted coffee aromas, silky, soft, sweet, honey, vanilla

What is this beast? On first taking a whiff I had to recoil. An immediate cabbage and Brussels sprout smell with strong and off-putting sulphur. Some lighter fuel and singed Styrofoam too. I was not prepared for this. Is it a whisky or a badly cooked TV dinner? After a while I could faintly detect some dark berries buried beneath, but that took some deep digging. A bad batch I started to think. But after checking some reviews online I understood this is part of its distinctive style. I can’t say that I like it though.

The taste is a world apart. I love the bait’n’swtch going on here. How can something that smells so bad taste so good? A beautiful play of salt and sweetness with sherry fruit and gorgeous tropical pineapple and grapefruit. There is some smoke, but amazingly the sulphur disappears on the palate. I love it and it reminds me of a Springbank.

This is an Edward Scissorhands whisky: off-putting and bizarre initially but it later reveals sweet hidden depths.

For anyone outside of whisky geek circles, Ben Nevis 10 could easily described as "the best, affordable whisky you've never heard of." The nose immediately grabs your attention with its beguiling mix of aromas that refuse to be pinned down. One minute you get a whiff of sherry and then it is gone, likewise there is some smoke but also not. There are big citrus notes of oranges and grapefruits as well as blueberries. Honey, salt, Earl Grey, macadamia and even some faint florals in the background. At only 46% the palate is beautifully oily and mouth coating. There is no smoke but there is a definite sooty sensation, lemon, grapefruit, pepper, honey, ginger, goodness. The finish is decently long, tangy and herbal. Ben Nevis is always a surprise in the glass.

NOTES & COMMENT OF A BLIND TASTING:
Very nice part, goes very much in my direction with its exotic fruit, I also love with my No. 1 Distille Caperdonich or Lochsides, also some old 80s Caol Ila. But since here there is neither salt nor the typical notes for the others, even though it is generally difficult to capture such a malt with such special notes, I can think of another one: Glen Elgin (or a Coal Ila), 10-14 years, bourbon cask, maximum short refill sherry finish (and that if Fino), 50-54%, with a better nose and a little less alcohol punch he could have got 1-2P more
    • Nose
Dusty, clear dusty notes, freshly planed wooden shavings, cocoa powder, slightly earthy-mushroomy afterwards, changes beautifully and gets its own, difficult to describe fruit acid, towards tropical fruit gums, guava and kiwi most likely, cumin, some green apple
    • Taste
Significantly stronger start than expected from the nose strength, punchy, great exotic fruit acidity away, guava, papaya, kiwi and some pineapple in between, green apple, camphor, light cardamom, white pepper, a little wasabi, nice green notes of green tea such as matcha , later gooseberry
    • Finish
Gooseberries, green apple, kiwi, ginger, lemongrass, a little white pepper, medium length, warm, intense

with water: unfortunately it loses something, there is also some sulfur, so I would recommend pure enjoyment here

Conclusion: Bamm, that's a standard bottling that sets new standards
    • Nose
      88 88
Malt, fruits (blood orange, grapefruit), coconut, vanilla, spices, ginger, subtle sherry feet, strong wood notes
    • Taste
      88 88
great start, light caramel sweetness, herbs, blood orange note, well balanced oak
    • Finish
      87 87
long, malt, spices and a little cocoa powder, the oak is again very pronounced, dry, somewhat bitter at the back

bottle code L17/8911. simply one of the best OBs on the market, near unbeatable value if you can find it under £50. profile reminds me of springbank 10 a bit. 8/10
    • Nose
coconut macaroons with glacée cherry, "funky" raisins, rosewater, honeysuckle, raspberry jam and a bit of "old drinks cabinet". a few older casks in the vatting is definitely not out of the question but it has a youthful drive underlaying it. well balanced!
    • Taste
arrival poised between soft and sharp, sweet and sour. turkish delight, golden syrup, mixed fresh citrus peels, rosemary, salted plums, figs. goes on with some spices joining in, nutmeg, white pepper and a litlte dark chocolate. there's an acetic/acidic and mineralic side to this that is not so apparent in the nose and works really well, although it needs a little water and time to be properly integrated.

A superb, top quality whisky. Hard to believe this is a 10 yo, as this would easily outclass whiskies twice its age and double the price.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sherry and Christmas cake, lots of fruit ( berries, cherries, raisins, figs, raspberries, prumes...), candy (cuberdons and candyfloss), old sherrycasks, wood and a very slight, pleasant sulphur note.
    • Taste
      91 91
Full, rich and round, with sherry and malty notes (grains and bread), chocolate and again the fruity notes. There are also quite some salty and briny notes that add lovely layers of complexity.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long and syrupy with walnuts, dried old wood and a very long lingering salty touch.

Sensational aroma variety in the smell, looks much older than 10 years, great balance between spices, fruit notes and barrel influences. Here was a sherry keg in the game.

Well balanced on the palate, strong and spicy, with a hint of herbal notes, which I would describe as typical Nevis flavors. Everything that has promised the nose, comes out here too. Nothing stands out.

On leaving, he leaves a pleasant mouthfeel, which unfortunately subsides a little too quickly and could be a bit more intense.

Great bottling and not comparable to the current 10s.
    • Nose
      90 90
light sweetness, clear malt, dark fruits, cloves, nutty, nutmeg, heather, prunes, forest honey, white pepper, grated lemon zest, gherkins, raisins, tannins ... old kitchen cupboard, poor furniture polish
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily, spicy, sweet, spicy, beautiful herbal notes, nutty, great barrel. Plums, honey, tannins, peppermint, malt, white pepper, light citrus notes, fresh sawdust, cereals
    • Finish
      89 89
medium to long, slightly bitter, subtle mix of prunes and wood, some honey sweetness, peppermint
