[April, 2019] The new Cadenhead spring release is out and after nosing all drams (which is a great and fair service of the Cadenhead shop, thanx for that!) I decided to buy four different bottles out of this release - among them this one...

...that is a fine fruity-honey experience (the trademark Glen Elgin flavours) enriched with spicy and bitter notes which turn this dram into a multi-faceted (never boring) drinking pleasure. Priced at under 100 Euro (I paid 89) this is good bang for your bucks, provided you like such a profile. I do, for sure...
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is old gold and the nose offers the bold fruity-honeyed profile Glen Elgin is famous for. There are lots of different ripe and over-ripe fruits (peaches, pears, mango, banana and more) topped with a honey-toffee syrup and some nuts. Later shy spices join in as do some waxy-oily aromas. No off-note or imbalance that I can find, this is pretty delicate to nose (and impressive, too).
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste repeats the fine flavours of the nose in different layers that are interesting to explore. In addition to these a delicious milk chocolatey flavour pops up in a later wave before the spices grow stronger and counter perfectly the sweet fruity attack (that is very enjoyable throughout the whole tasting experience). Water releases more toffee and herbal aromas in the nose and chalky-mineral and white chocolatey notes on the palate but to be honest: I prefer the neat dram!
    • Finish
      90 90
The dram arrives warming with a minor peppery touch on the palate and coats the mouth nicely. The finish is long with more spices (ginger, cardamom) and some fine bitter flavours from the woods (tannins) which provide a tasty counterpoint to the sweet fruits. Hey, this is a great composition of aromas and flavours - I like that! No distracting moments, this dram was bottled at the right time.

Glen Elgin became one of my latest weak spots after a very successful rangetasting with various IB bottlings. My curiosity told me I had to try this one as well
    • Nose
Well hello Elgin. The initial nose puts you inside a dunnage warehouse with the typical musty smells you find there of aging whisky, soaked oakwood and dirt floors. Just beautiful! After that it gives an explosion of fresh tropical fruits like pineapple, ripe apricot, peaches and lychees. Floral honey and candle wax are quite present as well. This is a very good nose and quite typical for Elgin I’d say.
    • Taste
On the palate the enjoyment continues. Again very fruity but also quite waxy and honeyed. A lovely short and spicy explosion mid palate, after which it eases down completely, giving loads of soft and gentle flavors of fruit, mild spices and waxiness. It becomes incredibly gentle. That musty dunnage warehouse is still there in the background.
    • Finish
A medium length finish with loads of soaked oakwood but also quite some fresh eucalyptus that’s stays around for a while. Lingering vanilla sticks and some cinnamon and ginger powder at the end. An absolutely lovely dram which I would buy instantly if I ever come across it!

Can’t add much here to everyone else, but an incredible value malt and a great Glen Elgin. I’d buy another..

Yellow fruit juice. A little green pepper? Ginger, runny honey, white pepper.
    • Taste

Yellow and tropical fruits galore. A nice waxiness, good mouthfeel. Spearmint. Matcha.
    • Finish

Minty, fruity, fresh. Kiwi, guava, slightly grassy. Very fresh and tasty stuff.

The heat is a perhaps a little too much but this is a decent aged bourbon maturation.
    • Nose
      84 84
subdued; some tropical fruit salad - pears, lychees
Palate: quite a buildup; not too spicy but it starts to come alive; soft mouthfeel

    • Finish

medium; can be a bit tiring that spiciness. I don't know if that is ginger heat or menthol heat. It is not super hot but tends to dominate the finish.

I had the opportunity to try with a buddy. The brief notes are what I remembered.
    • Nose
      Colour:
      Dark gold

      Nose:
Very soft ripe and set. Really pleasant and somehow summery. A tropical fruit cocktail with sugar and really creamy, syrupy. In addition a suitable ginger note, which fits perfectly into the picture and sets a pleasant counterpoint to the fruity sweetness. With some time in the glass, the colleague shows his age and you can smell oak wood.
    • Taste
Soft, almost tender start. Then immediately comes the tropical fruit candy and bring neat sweetness. Again, the ginger comes along and mixes up the sweetness, creamy thing. Subtle bitterness moves on. But really only very tender.
    • Finish
I would say for a while. In the throat area, he is actually gone quickly. There remains only a little ginger and subtle bitterness. But on the cheeks the syrupy, tropical fruit taste sticks, sticking sweetly.

Typical Speysider, very round and balanced. Snapper!
    • Nose
Vanilla. Malt. Fresh oak / tree sap. Green apple. Same as the Belgian. A little more steam, therefore alcohol light on the nose. Also a little more oak flavor. Also the most crystalline to date.
    • Taste
Very balanced, significantly less spicy than the other two. Very malty, lots of vanilla. An absolutely classic Speysider, which scores with lightness and slightly tingling flavor.

Very smooth and pretty soft but very fruity and sweet whisky. Very very pleasant.
    • Nose

Fruity, raspberry, some orange, grassy, vegetal green. Peach, honey, very full nose.
    • Taste
      89 89
A little tingling but also pretty smooth, fruity but a lot of caramel sweetness as well, milkchocolate and honey.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still fruity, a little tingling, still warming. A little bitter note underneath now, pretty long, honey.

  25. Thermidor scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A particularly good Glen Elgin with that Cadenhead quality. Seriously, at first nosing it's like "this is a CA bottling, right?" I would definitely recommend this bottle for the price you can still find it at as of writing.
I had some trouble settling for a final score, but after trying it with Bunnahabhain 1989 26yo cask 3370 (88 pts.) I feel this one deserves exactly the same score, not a point less nor more. It's a good whisky, but it is no Glen Elgin Centenary (*conspiratorial whisper* that stuff's good; I ended up killing two bottles and keeping one more for the future).
    • Nose
Oh, it's one of those rather fruity bourbon hogsheads, where the bourbon itself sits in the back seat, while bold fruit juice notes are driving. There's quite a bit of fudge in there too, and elegant soft oak, as well as some apple sauce, faint smoke, fresh oranges and honey. Occasionally it's a bit grassy with a side of nail polish, though. Water helps dispel the grass and the polish, making it even more fudge-y.
    • Taste
Neat it's a bit biting, but unusually full, with a big and delicious body. Excellent middle aged (in whisky terms, >20yo) oak, fruit juice, a bit of leather, and a bit of spiciness. Water makes it somewhat smokier, more in the style I'd expect from Glen Elgin, and brings out the fruit better.
    • Finish
Long, on malts and nectarines, with a side of taffy. Sadly there is every now and then this sting of ethanol I don't like very much, which drops my final score a few points.
