Whisky Reviews for Old Pulteney 1969 CA

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

Old-skool Cadenhead Dumpy Pulteney. A real gem with lots of fruitiness. Thanks Jeff for the sample!
    • Nose
The nose starts dusty with old library books, beeswaxed furniture and 'stophoest' (Dutch sweets). Followed by stewed fruit of figs and dates. Leathery notes later on. Also a sort of sweet bubblegum at the background, which is very enjoyable.
    • Taste
Unexpectedly fruity with lots of apple-mint, gooseberries and kiwi. Barley sugar. Gentle citric notes of lemon and lime. Grapefruit bitterness and some juicy oak as well. It's all very lively but delicate and fragile at the same time. Very nice.
    • Finish
Medium long. Orange marmelade. A little white pepper. Ginger. Pine at the end. Complex whisky. Perfectly balanced.

  2. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

This is one of those super rare, super obscure Scotch that were imported to the US market back in the days, and seems to have been lost through time.
    • Nose
      91 91
Well-balanced. Caramel candy, brown sugar. Quite minty with a pleasant nuttiness. Dr. Pepper cola. Bottle has been opened for a couple of days, and the aromas have opened up nicely. As typical of old dumpies, the nose is mellow and very pleasant, and in this case, quite excellent.
    • Taste
      91 91
Very "smooth", very balanced. Black tea, milk chocolate, sweetened black sesame pudding, butterscotch, slight tannins. Hint of saltiness -- we are by the sea at Wick, after all.
    • Finish
      90 90
This is where a couple points are subtracted. Short finish.

Addendum: After being opened for about 7 mos, this has really opened up! A bit surprising because I usually notice that the more delicate, lower ABV whisky depreciate in quality. Now, there is definitely added complexity with a more creamy texture. It's developed a heaviness and some fruits that weren't there before. Very interesting. I had it at 89 before... now 90-91 points.

Another addendum: I first opened this in the dead of winter... now the temperature definitely has risen. Perhaps the change in texture is due to temp?

Distilled May 1969 and bottled Sept 1982. It’s a 750ml imported by EUROPEAN BEVERAGE Co., Van Nuys, California. As far as I know, this is the only bottle known to exist, or at least, exist in the internet world.
