    Dense aroma, wonderfully present.
The fruit of sherry and smoke are not easy partners; Here they are in harmony. Balanced. In addition.

20 for an SV in Laphroaig!
    • Nose
delicious peat fat fruity and woody
      salt, dry smoke
      crushed and candied fresh grapes;
a little bacon, some dark chocolate
the algae come back in force
    • Taste
peat, liquorice, caramelised, a bit of bitterness
      berries on the cherry arrive
strong, peppery spices amplify the association peppery red fruits and peat that stays on the lip front
, caramel and bacon dust and wood chips.
    • Finish
long-bodied with grilled peat, bacon, caramel and macerated red fruits that collide.
      a real pleasure.

Excellent balanced barrel Laphroaig, but the average score in my opinion is very high. Either because of the anniversary packaging, or really wanted to make money ... The release level is similar to the ten-year barrel releases
    • Nose
Smoked smoky dried fruits, sea salt with iodine, notes of dark chocolate and pear jam, dried apples are added a little later
    • Taste
Powerful, wave of salt with smoke, light woody bitterness in oil
    • Finish
first it sprinkles with a wave of spices, then notes of dried fish come out, after which there remains an airy sensation of a mixture of spices and dried fruits

the whisky exchange: this 20-year-old Laphroaig single malt was distilled in 1998 on Islay and matured in a single refill sherry butt for two decades, before being bottled in Signatory Vintage as a part of its 30th Anniversary series. The nose is initially smoky. quickly developing into dark chocolate, sea-salt and floral aromas. The palate offers notes of red fruits, peonies and rich spices, before a herbaceous, chocolatey finish studded with mango.

rich and full nose, all in balance. Strong sherry, supple and very pleasant peat. Notes of orange and honey accompany a touch of cocoa. On the palate, the smoked takes on fat, bacon balanced by a vegetal note reminiscent of gentian. Then the cocoa is powerful for a full finish but a bit too bitter. A great whisky. 91.

In theory, this should be stellar, but vorsicht, it may be heavily sherried (coffee and mustard, as we sometimes say). Colour: deep gold. Nose: phew! There is some oloroso, with old walnuts indeed, and even a little ham and mustard (sauce à la diable, we say), but that would just interpenetrate (what?) with the very smoky distillate. Absolutely wonderful notes of camphor, embrocations, cut agave, then game, seawater, shellfish, chartreuse, fennel, and a little engine oil again. Wow, as they say at Islay’s Got Talent. With water: damp fabric and chalk. Always works. Looks like the water I’m using kind of offsets the sherry – good to know! (I’m ready to ship this particular water to you, price is 5,000€ a litre – while stocks last!) Mouth (neat): sumptuous, rich, pretty creamy, and just flawless. Mushrooms, walnuts, dried beef and cured ham, lemon marmalade, oysters, grapefruit juice, iodine, cough syrup, green pepper, turmeric, seawater and.. hey oh, have I mentioned walnuts? With water: indeed it takes water very well. Tobacco, soft leather, walnuts, black olives, seawater… Finish: long and very salty. Comments: have the excellent people at the Distillery ever issued a vintage 1998, beyond some hand-filled ones?

Open it for some more days and this will be a splendid dram. This cask needs more time to wake itself up than its sibling cask.
Open it for more than a month, you will prefer this one to the old 30 year old ones bottled in the 2000s.
