Whisky Reviews for Mannochmore 1977 IM

  1. Hemdl scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Beautiful malt, which just because of the classic maturation makes my heart beating a bit higher. I'm a big fan of no-frills ex-bourbon cask ripening, this one is one of them. The initially surprisingly bitter and harsh note on the tongue is certainly a matter of taste, but the malt catches luckily quite quickly and at the latest the departure then reconciled completely.
    • Nose
Pears, grapes, honey, a few light peaches and most of all - Haribo apple rings! Behind it some dry oak, which dampens the noticeable but not biting alcohol a bit. A nice fruit basket, which is served and how only classic ex-bourbon casks can conjure it up. I like it!
    • Taste
Here, the whole thing is turned upside down. Pleasant and not too strong start, then initially surprisingly tart and spicy, with a slightly bitter note. Is this still the same malt that previously presented itself as a fruit basket? Yes - that comes back only gradually, needs something on the tongue and on the palate. When the first spicy and tart wave has rolled over the tongue, the sweeter fruit flavors return little by little. Overall, not quite as fruity as in the nose, especially the apple rings I miss a bit. Nevertheless, very pleasant and pleasing, in the first place, apples, pears and green grapes are pushing forward, followed by a few floral notes.
    • Finish
Long finish, very slightly astringent. Here is a nearly perfect finish, just my taste. Hardly anything to feel the bitter and spicy oak, on the contrary. At the end, the fruit notes pick up speed again, finish the finish with sweetish aromas and then let still literally "water in the mouth" converge.
