Mackmyras bottlings are often interesting experiments. The Äppelblom has received a special finish in addition to New American Oak and Ex Bourbon barrels in saturated Calvados barrels of Christian Drouin, one of the most prestigious Calvados producers who adds no sugar to his apple brandy.

For me so far the "roundest" of the Mackmyra bottlings - quite delicious.

Apples, pears, sweet blossoms (jasmine), lemon, cloves, dark chocolate, freshly sawn softwood, pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, stomach bread, vanilla kipper, marzipan, walnut oil, freshly mown meadow, butter crumble, the flower aromas are stronger, a little more licorice 15 minutes, the flavors are getting fatter - yummy; thin legs
    • Taste
      86 86
immediately lots of apple and pear, bulky-oily-spicy, with lots of clove, pepper, ginger, nutmeg and a lot of vanilla, butter crumbs, latte, thick custard, lemon, pepper, clove, dark chocolate, marzipan, walnuts, walnut oil, some licorice
    • Finish

short to medium length; spicy, oily, fruity, with all spices, apple, pear, lemon, very dark chocolate and coffee, and finally jasmine flowers and vanilla

    • Nose
      Fresh, fruity; Heath / malt; Vanilla; citrus; butter; Apple pie with crumble; blooming summer meadow; Oak; Honey;
    • Taste
Apple; spicy; Vanilla; Caramel; Spices (clove), oak; Nutmeg; dark chocolate; Butter; it slowly gets nutty. The nuttiness gets stronger; For a larger sip more fruit to recognize (apple, beautiful barrel, very spicy, great oak), some ginger (slight sharpness); Very fresh; slightly hot (cinnamon and ginger sharpness) Very interesting mixture
    • Finish
Fruit basket, apple, pear; Oak; Nutmeg; Vanilla, caramel; Delicately bitter chocolate, briefly a bunch of other nuances that I just can not describe. Unfortunately only a small sample, but I will treat myself to a bigger one and analyze it more deeply

Interesting, but too alcoholic. Something like a solid village moonshine. The taste is softer than the smell, the apple is clearly felt. Almost no aftertaste

Again an interesting experiment by Mackmyra. The whisky is relatively round and tasty. The Calvados finish has shown its effect. But with whisky in the classic sense, this bottling has rather little to do.
    • Nose
The finish has definitely served its purpose. A strong aroma of baked apples and red, overripe apples first rises in the nose. Cherries, caramel and oak follow on it. With time, a strong smell of honey, nutmeg and clove develops.
    • Taste
The texture of the whisky is oily and the first taste is sweet again with lots of honey and caramel. The apple steps into the background and turns into calvados. Then there are pears and butter.
    • Finish
The finish is medium and the sweetness remains. Finally, the reverberation becomes spicy with dark chocolate.

    • Nose
Haribo sour apple rings (!!), Humma Bubba bubble gum, honey, cinnamon, fresh apples, generally very sweet
Quite unusual but I like it so far
    • Taste
Honey, green sour apples, again these sour apple rings, lemon, very light grapefruit, some pepper in the back

Very fine nose with pear, apple pie.
In the mouth, a little more rustic. The youth, shows through, but the whole is very well managed: fruity and an honest corpulence.
    Sparkling and herbaceous finale.

Refreshing but still warming, like the first sun in the spring.

      84 84
      Wood, apple, vanilla, Calvados, heather

    Apple Blossom
Appelblom is Swedish for apple blossom, in the case of this new release from Mackmyra it refers to the fact that the whisky was finished in casks that previously held calvados from Christian Drouin (after an initial maturation on ex bourbon barrels and virgin American oak). The house Drouin in considered one of the best calavdos producers in the world. It was founded in 1960 and the family company is currently run by Guillaume, third generation. This Mackmyra Äppleblom is a so-called ‘‘säsongswhisky’ – seasonal whisky – like the Skördetit, Iskristall, Blomstertid, Midnattssol, Midvinter, Sommartid, Vinterdröm and Vinterrök. I am expecting a very fruity whisky with apple in the lead, obviously.
The nose is as was to be expected. Very fruity on apples, apples and more apples. Apple juice, apple sauce, cider, you name it. And I do not just mean the distillate from our Swedish friends, but of course also the creamy, full aromas of the calvados. Add some cedar wood, but also quite a few herbal notes as if from jasmyn, ferns, hay and wet moss. Pears and oranges start to shine through. Finally some almonds and toffee. Textbook spring whisky to enjoy on a sunny terrace.
The body is fine, and so is the drinking strength. Nicely creamy and sweet on more of the same, with a spicy touch as if from a pinch of pepper and some cloves. Tasted blind, you might confuse this with a calvados, so it is fair to say that the Drouin cask has put its foot down. But if it works like this, I will not complain.

The finish may be somewhat short, the return of the jasmin from the nose brings a smile to my face.

Well, this was my 21st Mackmyra and I have to say that those seasonal whisky’s are truly great. This one will cost you around 65 EUR. Next Sunday, I’m serving this with some warm apfelstrudel. Cannot go wrong.
