I went into this very open minded because I've had my fingers burnt before with Lidl and Aldi whisky. Is it the best whisky in the world, obviously not but I think it deserved it's medal for best blend under the age of 12 and for £13 It's a steal. I was going to give it to my mother but not now I'm definitely keeping this one to enjoy. Sorry Ma.

Right here goes. Blood orange, honey and apple flavoured liquorice. What I like about this is it doesn't have that cheap overwhelming grain smell a lot of blends have. A very fruity nose with honey dew melon, a certain pear but I can't remember what it's called. White grape, apricot and ripe banana. There is a tiny little bit of a musky smell in the background but you can hardly notice it and it doesn't spoil it. All round this smells bright and fresh.

The taste is also bright and fresh and the fruits that I mentioned blend well into a nice cocktail. To say it is thin is a mistake, smooth is about right. Thin means it's lacking and this isn't. It has a bit of a tang like when you bite into an orange peel, some will like this others won't. This goes down really easy, almost too easy. There is just a sprinkling of spice that adds to the flavour and you can hardly taste the grain.

A medium finish that is slightly bitter and leaves the mouth a bit dry but that is ok it's like that after taste you get when you chew on dried fruit. The death I am again reminded of biting into that orange peel.

Yes, this is a simple, straightforward whisky, ‘classic’ in many ways, but even without taking cost into too much consideration, there is little to argue about. It does in fact come rather close to Chivas Regal 12, but at half the price.

soft and fruity with clear notes of apples, apple syrup and hints of grapes (almost leaning into calvados territory even). There is a soft oaky note, hints of vanilla, honey, some floral notes as well and a bit of solvent (thinner, yet not unpleasant). It’s all soft and faint, mind you.
    • Taste

The palate very much confirms what the nose brings, with again the apples and the honey upfront, soft vanilla notes, and only now the grainy/cereal notes are presenting themselves. It’s all quite simple, yet friendly and appealing. If you give this time, the ‘veil’ removes itself, and the honey , grain and fruit become more obvious and prominent.
    • Finish
      72 72
short, dry, with a hint of syrup and a soft woody note.

Good whiskey to drink a couple of shots while watching TV series in a family circle.

Tried this whisky as a starter during a blind tasting and I was truly surprised! I liked the nose: soft and fruity with some honey, apples, pie, calvados (?). Even a hint of medicine in the nose. The taste is decent with some white pepper, honey, vanilla, cereals and nuts. Bit of sweet apples too. Nothing spectacular but very decent taste :-) And then to end we have the finish. Expected more of this very short finish - it lacked complexity and intelligence. But it was ok. In the end this is a good purchase! I was surprised when I found out what I had just tasted blind. I was even surprised it was a blend. I thought I tasted a young experimental single malt :-) Not a cheap supermarket blend. So, yes, worth the money. But, in regards to other products on the market this is a standard dram with no risks.

Really liked the nose: soft and fruity with some honey, apples, pie, calvados (?) and a hint of medicine. Nothing shocking though! But pleasing and sweet, with the right touch of dust.

The taste got me right away. I expected something a bit flat and sweet. Sure, the sweetness is there. But instead of flat I had a little white pepper. Then I found some apples coming to the palate and and honey again. For me there was even a touch of vanilla mixed with a bit of burned wood. Cookies or cereal / nuts at the back of the mouth. Decent! Nothing spectacular but decent!

Finish was ok - expected more... Kind of short and one dimensional. Bit of sweetness, hint of orange peel, some dried out fruits, sand. Ok but short; lacking complexity and intelligence.

It is obvious that this is not the best whisky in the world. But be honest, when was the last time you bought a £10 bottle and you really enjoyed it? long time ago? try it :) it has no equal in its price category, really.

For the price I am honestly tempted to buy 12 bottles - I don't think you'll find a better value daily sipper blend.

Picked up another bottle today (19.02.2020) for €10. absolute steal.

Ripe pears, ripe bananas, saltyness. Gentle on the nose. Needs some warmth for the nose to come forward.
    • Taste
      82 82
Very sweet, fruity and balanced. Alcohol, not terribly well integrated, definitely some acetone-ish notes! Notes of plums, pears, apples.
    • Finish
      84 84
Surprisingly long and warm. Very gentle and pleasant.

For the price you won't find much better quality I don't think. The nose is probably the best part, the taste is a bit thin and the finish is practically.. well, non-existent. But all in all it's a good one to wet the palette.

Makes you think about how much we overpay for single malts.

  10. JackPeppi scored this whisky 85 points Newbie

For the money it's a wonder. Perfect speyside/ Highland nose, not much grain or heat, well balanced. If on a budget you can't do much better.
    • Nose
Christmas cake, soft honey, slight nuttiness, touch of rum and vanilla. Lemon?
    • Taste
Slow to start. Light sweet Arrival but develops a soft texture that is so sippable. Apple crumble vibes.
    • Finish
      Short, sweet.
