33 days after unscrewing and first tasting. It shows a clearly positive development, is now more full-bodied, smoother and more interesting
    • Nose
      74 74
lots of corn, sweetness with vanilla and caramel, notes of glue alongside. Very bourbon-like, which should also be due to the five-year maturation in first-fill bourbon barrels
    • Taste
      77 77
Clearly the best: creamy and oily in the mouth. Sweetness, corn, bourbon influences, caramel. Then there is also a bit of peppery seasoning that goes well with the corn sweetness. Easy and good to drink
    • Finish
      73 73
Short to just medium. Sweetness and spice, but now the alcohol influence and the grain bitterness come out clearly.

Toffee, pineapple, banana, sweet fruits, syrup
    • Taste
      82 82
Banana, jackfruit, maple syrup, sweet soft fruit bomb
    • Finish
      81 81
medium long, pineapple, caramel and jackfruit

  4. Lowlander scored this whisky 76 points Expert Senior

Could easily pass as a bourbon due to the sweetness, something different and for a single grain also quite OK, also the price.
    • Nose
      78 78
Floral, sweet, herbal, reminds me of vermouth, grapefruit, some oak and furniture polish.
    • Taste
      76 76
Toffee, vanilla, banana, sweet cereal notes and oak, spices.
    • Finish
      73 73
Short but warm, soft, very pleasant finish.

Bain's is a single grain whiskey distilled by the James Sedgewick Distillery. The whiskey was introduced in 2009. It is a fine, soft grain with a pleasant sweetness. The whiskey fully matures in first-fill bourbon barrels. However, it is transferred to new barrels in the meantime. A double maturation in the same type of barrels. It has no age rating, but the whiskey is at least five years old. The James Sedgewick Distillery was founded in 1886 in Wellington on the South African Western Cape. the color of the whiskey is dark gold.
    • Nose
The fragrance has aromas of toffee, vanilla, custard, grapefruit and floral accents.
    • Taste
The taste has notes of creamy vanilla, pear, banana, sweet oak and spices.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is warming and very soft.

    nose:
grain on corn, vanilla, caramel, in short are we on a bourbon? coconut juice return
    mouth:
    strange!!
    grassy, fruity, sweet, creamy!
herbs, stems, dried leaves, the pistils with, the sugar, the grain, a single grain so the caramelized corn in unroasted popcorn, on rose syrup for a moment, very pleasant
peppery back with a slight bitterness
    final:
soft, creamy, smooth, sweet, vegetal, caramel and corn kernel, simple but unique!

Light, sweet, vanilla, coconut. In the mouth, however, a beautiful substance, oily, mouth-filling, sweet, creamy. The finish is a bit graining, but clearly single grain. Summer dram, simple but not bland. I like it.

Whilst beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in South Africa, whisky is the most popular spirit with brandy coming in second. Andy tells me 80% of the whisky produced in SA is consumed there. [Apparently cider production & consumption is also extremely lively too].

C: Very clean, quality bartender-friendly spirit.
