Nose: a modern, rounded and thick nose. Dense fruitcake, dried figs, plenty of raisins and rich toffee. Apfelstrudel with hints of vanilla. Some brighter notes of orange peel and red berry jam. Earthy spice underneath, mainly cinnamon and nutmeg. Mouth: quite jammy although there are strong spicy notes too. Baked pears, oranges, blackcurrant. Toasted walnuts, Heering cherry, bitter almonds. Cinnamon and hints of coffee. Peppered lemon in the end. Finish: long, rich, on dried fruits, chocolate and peppery oak.

A modern, rich and vibrant sherry profile. The active oak is balanced by enough juicy fruits. Quite a benchmark in this genre I would say, overtaking recent GlenDronach in my book. Let’s just hope they make consistent follow-up batches. A tad expensive, but recommended nonetheless.

  2. dRambo scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

modern sticky sherry profile - no Saftmalt but somehow boring and for its price too tasty - but comes closer to the old Glendronach Revival Style for me as the current of Rachel
    • Nose
      86 86
dried figs, orange, citrus zests, grapefruit peel, sweet, apricot, bitter almond
    • Taste
      86 86
slightly dry, oily, syrupy - needs a small drop of water to open - dried dates and figs, plum jam, orange, apricot, chocolate, some leather, fine oak tones
    • Finish
      84 84
warm and sweet - but even after a big long chewed gulp not really medium long

  3. Tommyknocker scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A terrific sherry standard. The favor of the early batch? I hope later bottlings can keep this level.
    • Nose
superficially beautiful, tart fruit notes, blood orange, cherry, chocolate, raisins and new wooden furniture. Very round, nothing sticks out. Great composed.
    • Taste
very full for 46%, also here initially dark, juicy fruit, nectarine, blackberry. Then dark chocolate with cherry filling, Jaffa Cake Kirsch. spicy oak notes. Again very round and velvety soft.
    • Finish
      long, raisins, cherries and leather.

Such notes are almost more exhausting to write than complex ones. The fact is: “Sherry driven straight malt without rough edges. Then the list of all sherry profiles without sounding boring, done. Conclusion: a great malt after work. But not anymore. Yes, it deserves respect because the PLV is (barely) ok. With the grandiose bottle and the chic box, it is always worth a gift.
    • Nose
Very subtle and silky smooth, the nose offers all standard sherry flavors as expected. He does it masterfully and doesn't disappoint anyone, I'm sure of that. Also a great nose to bring newcomers closer to whisky.
    • Taste
The texture feels a bit dusty and floury to the touch. But only at the beginning, because saliva immediately makes it wonderfully sweet and creamy. In the transition it becomes peppery and warm and solidly drying. The whole thing looks balanced and deliberately smoothed. Masterful blending.
I think that's intentional. Very pleasant.
    • Finish
Relatively long finish for its age with pleasantly delicate, spicy and dry fruit notes. The ground white pepper remains present and accompanies the surprisingly good farewell. That's exactly why he gets a solid 86 from me. Thanks for the great rehearsal to André.

    • Nose
Much more fruity than the 12 year old tamdhu. Apple, pear, orange zest, sherry, grapefruit
    • Taste
Lemon tarts, vanilla, a little leather and perfume.
    • Finish
Long and warming. Here is most of the sherry, apple pie, sultana and just when you think the aftertaste is over, there is a small smoke in it.

A tad on the expensive side, this is nonetheless one of your better options this category.
    • Nose
Where other modern sherry whiskies can sometimes feel immature, that's not the case at all here. It's thick and packed with sultanas, butterscotch, toffee, orange zest and raspberry jam. Soft spices like cinnamon and a coffee-like influence add some welcome layers of complexity.
    • Taste
Hints of cappuccino and gentle notes of pepper and nutmeg. Oily and mouthcoating with Maraschino cherries, peanut skins, sweet oranges and notes of cassis. Really enjoyable.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, dried fruits and some charred oak.

  9. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      84 84
The 12-year-old with more intensity and even more (American) oak. Getting almost a bit woodshoppy here (wood shavings, sawdust). Also a darker sherry influence than in the 10 and 12 , by which I mean that we're heading more toward umami here: lovage, meat broth, crema di balsamico... Good, but perhaps a bit closed-up, and water doesn't seem to change it much. There's also a peppery side to it that seems to come from pretty active American oak.
    • Taste
      84 84
Walks the tightrope between savory/spicy with liquorice, black pepper (and peppery oak), soy sauce and sweet/juicy, with sweet marinated tomatoes, ripe oranges, toffee. Very nice and very intense, but - speaking of intensity - there's a definite amount of heat that distracts from and intrudes upon the flavors.
    • Finish
      82 82
Quite some heat as it goes down. Whereas the 10 and 12 are tame kittens, the Batch Strength and this one are uncomfortably hot. Seems to be the distillate, so my advice is to go for the weaker (at or around 43%) or the older (more than 20-year-old) Tamdhus.

  10. ctu scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Corresponding the old Glendronach Revival, but it's a bit weaker. Nice piece. 86/87.
    • Nose
      86 86
Citruses, sherry, fig, green apple, caramel, honey, malt and spicy oak.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily and creamy. Sherry, antique leather, malt, orange peel, cocoa and spicy oak.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Medium length, spicy, sweet.

nose is much more interesting than the taste to me.. More specific, fuller.. Very nice and interesting sherry, will need to explore Tamdhu more:)
    • Nose
      87 87
fruity, orange peel, chocolate, leather and tobacco notes in the backround
    • Taste
      85 85
chocolate, plenty of different fruit, apple pie, slightly spicy, oak notes
    • Finish

Tamdhu aged 15 years SSMSW 46%.

50ml miniature at home May 2022.

Dark golden, on the brink of turning light amber.

Aroma needs a little time. It’s more floral than fruity on first impact. Mixed rose petals. Then some orange blossom, maybe dried orange peel and raisin. Some standard 'ginger and apple' like I always get from sherry casks, but the profile here is at least equally floral. Nice, ‘refined’. Grows in intensity over time. Gains some chocolatey vibes and settles on green raisin eventually.

Body is watery to lightly oily.

Taste is light on impact, an almost effervescent-seeming saltiness rises up. Apple flesh. Some bitter char. Soft woodiness into the finish. Building spice, which becomes dominant – clove, chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg integrating with the burnt wood. After say 35ml each sip seems to leapfrog more into the spicy finish.

This is categorically not a sherry bomb, and that suits me down to the ground. Tamdhu are specialists in honest and sympathetic sherry cask maturation and it shows in the glass. Quite a nice ethereal character to it. Very easy to drink, some complexity.

Enjoyable but I actually prefer their 12 year old, which is half the price. This is an airier, more austere, spicier and more ‘refined’ dram whereas the 12 is more obviously European oak driven and, to my palate, a little richer. I like both but yes I prefer the 12, which is great news for my wallet, and I don’t think I’d personally splash out on a bottle of the 15 given the alternatives at the price point. 3.6/86

    Steamed Sherry Ginger Raisin Orange
It feels like I used a high-quality sherry tin, but at the same time
The more you drink, the softer and more balanced you feel.
It makes me wonder what would have happened if it was Sherry Pitt.

I tasted this in pair with a Macallan 15Yo Double Wood. While that one gives lot of butterscotch, this one is more wood-forward.
    • Nose
      85 85
The nose begun with damp forest note, in a good way. There's quite some pencil shaves which showed the wood influence. Saffron, black tea, and cardboard paper followed through. Dried plum, grape soda, orange flavoured pressed candy were found. Sweet tangerine and orange sorbet appeared after some time which gave a pleasant twist.
    • Taste
      84 84
It's drier, more austere and more woody than the Macallan 15Yo. A different profile. It also has a butterscotch mouthfeel, but quickly overwhelmed by cocoa and roasted nuts. Dried dark fruits were there, as they have to be.
    • Finish
      85 85
Instead of warming the chest little by little, like the other one did, this one gave a good long chest warming feeling. The aftertaste is a little too bitter to my liking, The good thing is there is very little resinous aftertaste.

  16. HYTTTTTT scored this whisky 84 points Member Senior

A good sherry barrel product, the smell is quite satisfactory, the taste is like a fortified version of Macallan 12, the alcohol is also stronger, and the wine is oily.

one of those "new" sherry malts
I liked it in its own way; just to enjoy
you can add a few drops of water to it
    • Nose
Sherry full of the new kind, light oak, nutmeg, figs?, dark compote, minimal maggi, minimal lemon comes, sulphur, slightly spicy, sweetness, some vanilla, at least a chemical note, light cola-cherry note
      with water: more oak

from the 1920s: the sulfur note is getting stronger, liquorice, minimal gum, sherry, dried herbs, light rose scent, minimal cola, a note that I can't name but it fits beautifully
    • Taste
      oily, strong, almost sticky
fresh oak, sherry, sweetness, light raisins, maggi herb, light leather, wild berries, light sulphur, at least a chemical note that is not disturbing

      with water: tart, more bitter
    • Finish
      medium to long
Shery, sweet, slightly spicy, tangy red berries (a mix), slightly Maggi, slightly sulphur

with water: warm, lots of nutty notes

    Notes from a blind tasting

Quite tasty, pretty straight forward, but there is a little lack of tension.
    • Nose
Light sherry, some sulfur, light and red fruits, sweetness, no smoke.
    • Taste
Creamy and mild in the beginning, sherry like in the nose, only with time does it add a little spice.
    • Finish
Good medium length, the flavors fade evenly.

  26. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

From the first nose, we have a nice fruit basket, with first tropical fruits, pineapple, papaya, coconut, then red fruits, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, finally some orchard fruits, pears, juicy apples, grapes white. Almonds, cashews, and a pinch of salt to finish. Very nice palate, on fermented fruits, always this fruit basket, but this time they have been crushed and mixed together, and left for a few hours in the sun. A little calva side. The finish is not very long, quite robust all the same, earthy and fruity. Heather.

Very spicy nose: cinnamon, nutmeg, some cocoa, behind it only very fine dried fruit aromas and some dried orange peel, plus some polish. Well composed but a touch too weak and uncomplex.

A similar picture in the mouth: great spicy-fruity nuances that remind me of Glendronach but unfortunately a bit too watery.

Lots of chocolate and espresso, nuts, some tobacco and dried fruit on the finish. Unfortunately a bit too weak.
    Length: 5/10

Great sherry-heavy malt, could be a great one, but unfortunately suffers a bit from the intensity. For me, however, a touch ahead of Glendronach's cousin of the same age.

People that say the Glendronach 15 revival is better, this could be true. It could also not be true. What is true, is that if you love sherried whiskies, then the Tamdhu 15 from olorosso casks is one of the two 15 YOs you must try.

Nose: fruit with spiced currents, and orange zest.
Taste: Citrus, berries and nuts, with a little creaminess.
Finish: Sherry, biscuits, malt, vanilla - lasting.

Edit: Tamdhu single casks and the 15 have picked up a lot of awards recently. They must be getting something right. Are they the one to watch for when the 18's come out?!

A Tamdhu that has been on my list for quite a while now. Luckily I am able to try this as part of a sample share. Try before you Buy is a good motto these days :)
    • Nose
A classic oloroso dominated whisky. Lots of nuttiness and tutti frutti like flavors on the nose. Somehow it seems to be a bit closed though. With water it opens up more. It adds freshness in like mint and pine tree.
    • Taste
Soft creamy and full bodied. Sweet and savory. Classic sherried whisky with all the usual suspects you can expect. No surprises here but it is tasty and pleasant!
    • Finish
The finish is the best part for me. It’s long and rather complex. Good quality oak. European influences are quite clear. Intense tannines (in a good way), plumbs, raisins, dry nuts ending with loads of fresh minty flavors. Lovely!

As far as modern sherry bombs go, this is worth a look. It’s not my preferred style, so my score reflects that. There is no denying modern sherry is a crap shoot at best. This is clean, straight forward, with tons of sherry. I’m trying to compare it to something - I’d probably put it close to glendronach 15 under Rachel Barrie, but my preference would be the tamdhu. It’s got less px influence than that, so a little less syrupy sweet and more dark chocolate and tart strawberry notes.

Tamdhu did a very good job on this one. I'm sure they didn't implement some sort of quick sherry finish on ex-bourbon barrels, no, they for sure matured this malt for its full life on sherry casks. A malt that takes time to be rewarding. At first I was underwhelmed by how buttery and caramel focused it was, it took me a few drams to realise that it simply needs some oxygen. In the end I still desire more depth on the palate, especially after that wonderful nose.. Based on that it's a little too expensive in my opinion. Tamdhu are onto something great though!
    • Nose
We're off to a nice start. The sherry isn't 'smacked upon' the malt, we have a beautiful integration going on. Orange, cherry, raisin, apple compote, cranberry and rose water. Fruity, yes, but it leans more to a confectionery and buttery side. On we go with dark chocolate, cream sherry, Werthers Original, lemon cake, sultana and sour cream. Further on vanilla, tobacco, leather, old books, walnut, paprika, salted butter and even a little smoke. Increases in brightness/fruitiness with time. Not a single flaw here.
    • Taste
I'm not fond of using smooth as a descriptor, but it is velvety soft and oily on arrival. It has a tartness/spiciness too that is distracting me a little bit. Orange, apple compote, fig, sour cherry and citrus zest. Then assorted chocolate, brown sugar, toffee, sultana and fried banana (love that at my local Chinese takeaway). Creamy malt, tobacco, new oak, pepper, mint, walnut, roast hazelnut and beef stock complete the picture. Such a balanced act which needs some time to unfold to its full glory. I wish it went a little deeper with the sherry notes though. Yep, the old Revival has spoiled me.
    • Finish
Medium in length with creamy malt, chocolate sauce, caramel and walnut.

      Try in the blender glass:
A lot of sherry sweetness, but unfortunately a little too much alcohol for 46%. Smells more like PX, but also a bit of Oloroso in the background. With a little water it becomes less clumsy and a little more spiciness comes out.
    • Taste
      87 87
Delicious, sweet, round, a little bit less complex, well, what can you say, even in the middle part again only delicious, without much being discovered or happening.

There are better ones at the age of 15 and in the price range. For example, the Glen Garioch 15 or for less money, even the Glenfarclas 15 is just as tasty in its own way.

He needs some air, then suddenly he opens up nicely. Wow, at first boring mainstream and newfangled sherry cask maturation. Then cinnamon, chocolate and walnut. Very intense, delicious. The milky Brennereicharakter also comes through. But not the absolute best in terms of price. But quite pleasant and nice to drink.

Super balanced between youth, age, Brennereicharakter and Sherry Fassreifung. You can not say more than that - that's the way it has to be. Only the price is too ambitious with 80 €. There are cheaper, similar or more offer.

This malt has a modern but beautifully made sherry profile. Very tasty without teasing, although maybe a bit more "depth" should be. The medium length finish could offer a bit more. Overall, a very nice modern sherry malt.

Chestnut colors and with medium-sized windows you hope for a beautiful body. The first crawl of dark, ripe fruit, raisins and blackberries, roasted almonds and dark honey. Vanilla, cedar and a little eucalyptus come through and a faint note of smoked salt. Short, pleasant sweetie paired with fine spice.
    • Taste
