A very palatable, fun Islay dram, good integration of wood, sweet yet not overly sweet sherry and medium Islay peat. Very controlled, not as wild as e.g. the presumably younger Classic of Islay by the very same bottler. Seems to have Lagavulin in it, but mixed with something else (Caol Ila?).
What's holding back a higher score is that despite the initial up to mid development being very pleasant, it does not continue to develop and fill out the mouth with its finish like, e.g. a Lagavulin 12, or to some degree even the 16 does (despite the latter being obviously weaker on the general palate). All in all a good bang for the buck, one of the better "Pirate" editions, and, what's become sadly somewhat of a rarity these days, not much sulphur (even recent bottlings of "craft" distiller Springbank have succumbed to, see 12 cs, 15, Hazelburn 14*).

*Which does not make them bad whiskies per se, but hard to love for people sensitive to sulphur.

This is absolutely a great young Islay!

Nose: it’s a dryly smoky and ashy and reminds me Lagavulin, because the nose is with Lagavulin's epitomical sweetness. Also it come with wonderful whiffs of overripe apples in an old seaside cellar, or something like that. Mouth: that unmistakable combination of a big peatiness with wee tart oranges and a ‘cigar’ smokiness. But with a little more roundness, with hints of raisins coming through. The sherry wood finish do works here! Finish: long, well, peated oranges and raisins.

No one should be against such whisky indeed, unless you’re severely against peat sherry stuff. What a good bottle!
