I was very positive about this 18yo before tasting it, remembering its lower vintage spikes. Unfortunately, the whisky is average at best. The aroma is still reasonably good, but the taste and finish are too bitter for me and too little fruity. The note is higher due to the addition of a drop of water, which refined this whisky, adding more sweetness in the form of raisins and peach syrup. The finish was also lengthened, unfortunately still very bitter. I do not know what could have been the reason for this weak, for me, projection .... Poor quality of the barrel?
Unfortunately, I am not tempted to buy the entire bottle.
    • Nose
      80 80
      delicate, sweet, sherry, chocolate, oak
    • Taste
      79 79
sweet, fruity, slightly peppery, coffee grounds, oaky bitterness with a hint of honey
    • Finish
      79 79
medium long, quite sweet, bitter chocolate tip

I liked this more than the Arran Amarone Cask. This Arran 18 Year Old shows more of the distillery’s character, the overall taste reminded me of a solid Speyside whisky. But it also tasted like something younger than an 18 Year bottle; it felt a bit unbalanced on the palate, and the oak notes were stronger than I would’ve liked or expected here.
    • Nose
      68 68
Apricots, barely ripe peaches, honey sweetness.
    • Taste
      71 71
Sweet vanilla & caramel, salted caramel, the ABV shows up rather quickly (even at 46%) it feels a bit unbalanced, prickly ginger. Apricots, more ginger, oak, dark chocolate bitterness. The oak is rather pronounced.
    • Finish
      66 66
Short-to-medium finish, Dark chocolate, woodiness, over-steeped tea finish.

N: Though seemingly an all-sherry malt, due to plenty of refill cask maturation at play this isn’t a bomb as first expected. One could spend hours on a nose like this, one I find this far more complex than when I first tried it in 2019 [WLP]. Smelling like an old soft-aged sherried [30yo] Bunna, the colour of this spirit reflects all those rich [“lush” says Mariella] stewed honeyed vegetal waxy fruits brought on by 16+ years in refill casks with a [9 month approx.] finish in first-fill oloroso wood. Out of interest, the 21yo is [currently] all made up from 1998-vintage refill casks. Overall, this 18yo offers up a dreamy nose.

T&F: Less sublime/more jobbing on the palate than the nose, but still with plenty to admire: form, mouthfeel, colour,… and that vegetal waxy aspect from the nose remaining true. A little water is recommended and encourages the toasted character to shine through. Later, we’ve [more] vegetal > sweet~bitter cocoa~vanilla, still with plenty of fruit action all over the place, a metallic edge, and just a touch of heat. With this one's age showing at the end, it’s a testament to the blender – a feature throughout this flight – that the spirit is never overwhelmed/over-shadowed by the casks. We finish with a honeyed/caramel melon sweetness with a kale-like vegetal aspect.

C: Accomplished and characterful whisky from a relatively new & small company selling some of its oldest stock. At £86, this is a very fair and competitively priced 18yo in the current climate. It’s easy to imagine that Arran will continue to go from strength to strength as further decades roll on.

Solid and very drinkable. Almost too good. An 18 should be and remain a pure pleasure drop. You shouldn't even think that you could really lose a lot of it. Somehow it is already too drinkable and socially acceptable, almost "mainstream".
That doesn't make him bad now, on the contrary, but also not really with much profound personality.
    • Nose
      60 60
Dominantly sweet. Primarily sugar-sweet, only then in the later course it also becomes a little fruity-sweet. If you have survived the dominant sugar wall and your nose has gotten used to the smell, the first oak bitter notes come towards you. Aromatic mild and not spicy and unpleasant. In addition, subtle vanilla tones.
    • Taste
      60 60
Bitter at first. Such a mixture of oak and cocoa (chocolate). Then the sweet notes kicked in. From then on there is an interplay between bitter and sweet. With the second sip it also gets a bit sour.
    • Finish
      60 60
      Slightly bitter, slightly sour.

Arran's Shirley barrels should be very distinctive, but it is a pity that they are mixed with some crude and low-year new wines, and it also reduces the original fat and fat wine body. Pre-adjusted fruity cocktails.
    • Nose
Arran's iconic creamed golden apricots, with a huge sugar content, mixed with a sense of cocktail. Very young yellow fruits, citrus, lemon, pineapple, yellow peach, with a small amount of sweet and sour flavor inside. Milky fragrance, rich pollen, honey, scent of bags, a little freshener (cucumber, very little salt), and finally converted to raw almonds (bitter), fresh wood, raw dough and 45% chocolate .

The fragrance is rich and unrestrained, but it has a sense of alcohol that is not of this age and is younger.
    • Taste
Ginger, high sugar, tropical fruit drink, apple, citrus. Compared with the smell, the cheese smell is reduced, leaving only milk and honey, and at the end it turns into almonds, herbs and oak.

Full, fat is acceptable, sweet, acid-free, tannin-free, slightly astringent, with little bitterness, and no spiciness.
    • Finish
Medium, residual tea, bitter almonds, woody aroma and light fruit.

Room temperature when drinking: 24 ℃

    Viewing Eyes: Golden

Smell Nose: Honey, a little sulfur, a little interference with the sense of alcohol. Hearty yellow peach meat, mango meat, banana melon puree, cucumber skin, a little fruit vinegar, popcorn cheesecake, golden oatmeal, rich wheat flavor, biscuits soaked in milk, a little yeast dough. As time goes on, the dry wheat, cheese and honeydew aromas are integrated, coordinated and have a certain sense of hierarchy.

Taste Palate: At first it was all kinds of fruits, honeydew melon, yellow peach, peach mousse, orange soda, pineapple, fig. The central woody aroma is magnified, cheese, fallen leaves and dead branches. Sweet and sour kiwifruit appeared in the back section, with a little shredded tobacco, leather, and dust at the end. Palate is very impactful

Finish: Finish, long, European bag, dried wheat flavor, dried fruit, bear biscuits, citrus fudge

Body: Medium weight, tannin, more condensed and strong, hardly detectable

    Nose: 88/100

    Palate: 88/100

    Finish: 87/100

    Body: 88/100

    Overall: 88/100

Overall: If Shirley barrels can be made like this, is it not a trivial matter?

Reminds me of the 18 Talisker. Of course not the taste, but rather how the whisky is designed.
Without water it has the right power, but only a few drops too much and it becomes watery.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Floral, slightly sweet and fruity
    • Taste
      88 88
      Oily, fruity, present oak
    • Finish
      86 86
medium length and quite voluminous, but there is a slightly annoying nuance that I only notice with colored whiskys.

Great filling, with great fruit notes from a lot of apple and lemon, as well as some exotic fruits. In addition, a very pleasant and strong oak note with a lot of dark chocolate.
    • Nose
Immediately a sweet, light fruit note, with a lot of green apple, but also exotic fruits like kiwi, mango. Freshly squeezed lime juice and some salt. Behind it is a strong hint of vanilla and a little caramel, interwoven with a slightly musty oak note.
    • Taste
Medium onset, silky mouthfeel. First citrus notes, before the apple and the kiwi appear again, nice, light fruit cocktail. Suddenly there is a tingling on the tongue, and the oak takes over, this brings strong, dark chocolate and a little nougat, as well as a nice spice.
    • Finish
Medium length, dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and still the apple. Again slightly salty out the back.

Beautiful 46% vol. Typical mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks. Very complex.
    • Nose
First sweet fruits, vanilla and something that reminds me of Christmas. And oak, no wonder at 18 years.
    • Taste
Chocolate, caramel sweet with vanilla. And a sharpness. Fruity, no lemon, orange, more orange juice.
    • Finish
Medium to long. The fruit stays and also a chocolate.

C: I had this in March and liked it very much [Blog87]. This appears to be a softer/tamer batch [or bottle], with a shorter finish.

The first person I stop and talk to [on my way to TBWC stand] is Mariella Romano, followed by Colin Hampden-White [thethreedrinkers.com]. Now based in Glasgow and Global Brand Ambassador for Arran, Mariella pours us both the 18yo which I've not tried before.

C: Solidly competent whisky and at £76, a fine alternative for fans of the Macallan 12yo sherry wood say, at £70.
