    Review from

Colour : Japanese gold leafed maple or an acer if you prefer
On the nose: immediately its butterscotch and cinder toffee. I can fondly recall being at Beamish and their old sweetie shop when the latter was brought out to set and then smashed up. The room filled with sugary aromas and caramelised delights. Redcurrants robustly arrive as do hazelnuts and pralines cut through finely by fresh Scottish raspberries. I’ll even say rum fudge! Sweet Spanish tobacco, candied orange slices and vanilla almond granola.

In the mouth : utterly distinctive with tinned clementines with a lingering sense of liquorice and blackcurrants. A resin-like texture that sweeps across the palate and a lingering sweet honey peppery finish shrouded in a delicate smoke. Returning to the main body there are elements of lime, pineapple, mango, nuts and caramel all at play. Wonderfully balanced and a classic example of spirit and nature in unison.

    Conclusions :
This Benromach is one of those really special drams. Already shooting into my hemisphere occupied by the 1974 Ardbeg, 1970’s Tormore’s and Brora’s, 1960’s Macallan, the George Strachan Rosebank and that 1974 Deanston Oloroso sherry cask. Yes, it’s right up there and maybe I should purchase a bottle…

    Score: 9/10

I’m not quite with it today. I ask Ben Bowers of ‘A Dram a Day‘ fame, for the 1972 Benriach, doh! Thankfully he was on the ball.

N: A closed nose that reluctantly opens just a little [in the time I had]. I picked out splintered oak alongside a mintiness and an onion-freshness.
T: Charred sherry oak-sugars, a touch of root veg and mince pies is all I noted.
F: The finish bears congealed oil, but those oaked sugars from the palate remain, accompanied by a pleasing barley freshness.
C: This cask yielded only 75 bottles, so rare stuff indeed! With gratitude to Ben.

Very big and bold, really fresh for such an old cask.
    • Nose
Tropical fruits, orange, huge chocolate spices, even a little bit farmy, gingerbread.
    • Taste
Intense and concentrated, leather, chocolates, tangerines, blood orange, grapefruits, very very sour and citrusy. Roasted barley, some mints, fermented sorghum.
    • Finish
Long, inky and minty, fresh, rich leather, marmalade, light and dry sherry.

A full-bodied, multi-layered whisky that takes water really well.
It is complex, luscious in fact, but I preferred the 35 year a little more, both are great and must try whiskies anyway.

This is the best whisky I've tasted.

One of the best whiskies in the world. A golden amber hue with a tempting nose of vanilla custard, honey and tropical fruits, with intriguing hints of mature oak and an edge of fresh menthol. With lingering oak flavours and hints of smoke on the finish, just 75 decanters of this single cask vintage were bottled

    Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose: Enjoy the tantalising notes of vanilla custard, honey and baked pineapple, mingling with intriguing hints of beeswax polish, mature oak and an edge of fresh menthol

Palate: Savour the smooth sweetness beautifully balanced by a gentle dash of warm pepper. A medley of ripe tropical fruits, mango and passion fruit develops.

Finish: Candied citrus peel and dried tobacco lead to subtle undertones of aniseed.

    Dave Broom:

Full-bodied, mature yet graceful. There’s a distinct oiliness to begin with sitting alongside cedar/hinoki, light incense and a little dried apricot. A green, herbal element (chervil and sweet cicely) then lifts off, before we bed down in wax polish, red apples and soft orchard fruit. The richness of age is on show here – beautifully balanced, layered and complex. It encourages watering so it can show off more resinous elements. Savoury, exotic, with scented woods. Sophisticated.

There seems to be a tickle of smoke, but the palate is dominated by super-ripe fruits – both hedgerow and tropical. There’s light grip but the waxiness keeps any tannic attack well at bay. As with the nose, water is welcome, adding a further dimension and an increase in spice.

Ripe tropical fruits with the slight dustiness of age – and a hint of wood ash. Remains highly complex.

Some (but not many) old whiskies take you into a different flavour world. This has that quality. That’s what 46 years in refill can do. Relaxed, complex, layered.

    Right place, right time
    Night time, sprinkled by Stardust…

Just a tad too much oak on the palate to vault over that 90 point threshold. Love the complexity, but it would’ve benefited from a bit more balance.
    • Nose
A proper amount of sandalwood with a touch of menthol, as well as warming spices such as cinnamon. There’s a whiff of beeswax and furniture polish, accompanied by triple sec and pickled lemon peel. Finally a faint note of stewed pears, and caramel glazed red apple. A drop of water brings out a hint of pralines.
    • Taste
Nice creamy, oily mouthfeel. Very rich and mouth-watering. A sugary sweet arrival, with a good amount of old wood. Maybe a little too much? Cloves and nutmeg surface, as does a touch of aniseed, and orange marmalade as well. Water brings out cinnamon as well.
    • Finish
A whiff of smoke, lingering oak and orchard fruits. Medium in length.
